Tonight's listen:Grant Green - Feelin' the SpiritI hardly know the first thing about jazz, but this is my favourite jazz album. Feelin' the Spirit was one of three genre-themed LPs Green recorded in 1962, with the others being the country-inspired Goin' West and self-explanatory Latin Bit. The gimmick here is that all the songs are old negro spirituals done up in the classic Blue Note style. While the rockist-friendly guitar/piano/bass/drum lineup and simple gospel melodies make it accessible for jazz newfags, it's also a profoundly soulful album which rewards repeated listens. Everyone is in the groove, saying just enough to get the point across. Even Green's occasional habit of repeating the same few notes over and over works well in this setting. Feelin' the Spirit is a rare example of an album where the standout song is the CD-only bonus track: "Deep River" is a transcendental experience where a young Herbie Hancock manages to steal the show. Makes me wish there were more classic jazz LPs that used this sort of music as a basis.LP: 9.7/10CD: 10/10https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5H30GLmLWQ
ANYWAYFor my next review should I do literal schizo outsider country, something spooky for Halloween, or a /mu/core album

>>131847672All I can think of is that Deep River has a credited songwriter while the others don't, maybe they wanted it to be all truly traditional songs
