Is he really that bad of a drummer? he just knows when to let the guitar sing...
>>
In the 80s when he was actually trying to compete with the other thrash drummers he was pretty good. He stopped trying after the black album though. Metallica in general stopped trying around that time because why bother? you're already the biggest band in the world now.
>>

he never had very good technique but could at least bring the live energy back in the day
>>
I had a friend describe him as the "worst-best" drummer of his time. The top guys in the 80's and 90's would drum circles around him but you really wouldn't see an improvement if you grabbed a standard drummer of the era.

I don't care for his boring ass style, but thats not the problem with him. He fumbles allot of those things he calls fills and isn't very tight overal. So yeah, considering 'Tellica being the biggest heavy band, he's a pretty bad drummer
>>
It pisses me off when people say he sucks as a drummer because I think my playing style matches his the most. Whenever I analyze my air drumming and think about whether my air playing would actually produce the same drumming as the actual song, I've found that Metallica feels the most natural to my style and I don't have to really think about what the drummer is doing.

Would a better drummer have made Metallica better?
>>
there's some pretty sloppy live stuff out there, but overall i'd say he's the perfect drummer for that band. a lot of his parts are pretty basic, but what else are you going to do over a bunch of 4/4 palm muted downstrokes

no, later metallica like st anger and death magnetic needed his cringe-kino meme drumming for its comedic value. most other drummers, even good ones, just mostly blend in the background and you don't even know their names, but he actively makes me lol when I listen to those later recordings and live performances, which has to count for something and I personally wouldn't trade it for anything.

He was good enough for the type of music Metallica played in the 80s but he stopped practicing. When you stop practicing you get worse over time because people will eventually surpass you.

No his arrangements, and writing would be missing. that is where he excels.

Not really because James is the creative force of the band. That's why they nearly fell apart when he went to rehab. A better drummer would just mean their live shows would be better. Like when Dave Lombardo played for Metallica during a concert. That's what Metallica would be with a better drummer.

Rock musicians are not good instrumentalists.

Lars doesn't suck because of his style, although it it might be "simple" compared to what many other metal drummers do. He sucks because of his technique

>>131900641
I actually think his drumming is part of what made Metallica popular with normies compared to other thrash bands. His fills are tasteful when required but his playing mostly fades into the background behind James' precision downstroke riffing and doesn't overpower the songs like Lombardo or Menza or Benante hammering away completely on top of the beat at all times. It makes them sound less busy and more anthemic

>comedic value
St Anger is serious business.

>James is the creative force of the band
St Anger would have sounded less soulful (see picrel) without Lars's decisional percussion contribution.
>>

I think he needs to mix up his playing styles, maybe get some lessons. Get curious with the drums, get a ride cymbal, get some wooden sticks. He won't. The weakest element on 72S (besides the guitar solos) was the drums...every song sounded the same. They just need to stop writing new music, it is obvious their interests lie in making money and zionism.

His name is Larry
>>
>>131900006
No
People just shit on him cause he's not some mega quantized soulless garbage and it turns out it can be pretty hard to play thrash metal drums as you age
>>
>>131900006
People only pretend Lars is a bad drummer because he sued Napster
>>
>>131900006
listen to Dave Lombardo and then listen to Lars. You'll get what people are saying. Although I don't hate his drumming. He has that high school garage thrash band vibe, or at least he did early on, which is great imo. Not everything has to be super technical.

No, people shit on him because he's a lazy prick that has worse chops than a mediocre high school drummer. The parts he made for metallica themselves are fine, he just sucks so bad that he can barely put together a usable take in the studio. Nevermind watching him struggle through some of the songs live.

I agree that a "mega quantized soulless" drummer would not suit their sound at all. The problem is he is too shit to even play the way you're referring to now.

He's a genius drummer and he's the reason why Metallica isn't just typical riff slop. He sucked after he got old but so does every metal band, they might stay in better shape but who really cares
>>
>>131900006
He's not a bad drummer because his fills are shit and simple or his rhythms are bad and simple, he's a bad drummer because he's got no rhythm and and cant keep time. Some people are just like that, you either have it in you, or not.
