Were they always as despised as they are now?
>>
>>131907202
Boner was. No one cares about the others.

For me it's because of how overrated they have always been and especially at some point in the mid-late 90s they started being given living legend/rock royalty treatment and it blew my mind how fucking astroturfed they became. They're not a terrible band but they're treated like the second coming of jesus fucking christ.

before I posted this I wanted to see if AI would know who I was talking about and of course it did because FUCK U2
>>
>>131907202
they were cool in the 1980s. then Boner disappeared up his own asshole and thought he could save the world
>>
i'm gonna start a U2 cover band and call it ME3
holy shit i'm gonna be rich
>>
>>131907944
there is only one thing worse than U2 and thats a U2 cover band.
expect to get punched in the face a LOT
>>
U2 were chill when they made somewhat decent alternative rock music. The move to popslop with Joshua Tree unironically ruined U2 as a listenable band.
>>
>>131907981
shut the fuck up you're just mad you didnt think of it first shithead
>>
>>131907202
I was a massive U2 fan and their last good album was 1993. thats 36 years of shit releases which is far longer than their good years.
>>
>U2's first album was 46 years ago
what the fuck that cant be possible
>>
There new song is actually good.
It has "Joshua Tree"vibes and Bono's voice is powerful again.

There 2027 World tour starts in February.

do you think it's still '98 when it was less than 20 years ago?

> they were cool in the 1980s
Not really. Both Morrisey and Robert Smith dissed them constantly. They had no frens among their generation.

>>131908776
Henry Rollins has also always hated U2.
>>
>>131907202
They're finally recovering from that iTunes stunt after they shat on Israel and Ed Sheeran. hmm where are you located OP?
>>
>>131907202
They never really bothered me, a few decent songs but just rather generic for the most part, the hate over done like most bands.
>>
lots of people don't realize the huge influence U2 had on Christian rock and how nearly all of those bands in the last 35 years copy their sound
>>
>>131908776
Were you even alive in the 80's?
Their respect from "The Police" made any other artists opinions null and void.
>>
>>131908900
Industry plants will plant. U2 never really belonged to a scene or something like that.
>>
>>131908776
>>131908801
It depends on your definition of cool.

To your average person, yes, U2 was the coolest band at the time, they had a beatlesmania type wave going on and we're taking over America.
To an artist that is their peer, u2 was the definition of uncool because they actually broke through, became corporate, and therefore were the defacto band to shit on.
>>
>>131908951
U2 were their own scene.
After "Unforgettable Fire" and Live Aid they could sell out any stadium in the world.
>>
They still haven't found what they're looking for.
>>
Lot of snobby Gen Xers and Millennials are too irony poison to enjoy just simple cheesy rock genuinely, I noticed zoomers don't give a fuck and just like what they like these days, won't doubt they don't hate U2 like the older people do look at all the cheesy ass bands they like now.
>>
>>131907202
People only pretend to hate them now because they put an album on everyone’s Iphone
>>
>>131908887
Does U2 count as Catholic Rock?
>>
>>131909118
Their touch a lot of christian themes and imagery, Until The End of The world as an example, is a chat between Jesus and Judas. But I dont see anything overtly catholic.
>>
>>131907202
Hello
>>
>>131909118
IIRC the cult they were in was some flavour of Evangelical.
>>
>>131907934
actually, wasn't it the opposite?
in the 80's, they did over-the-top save the world shit but were actually kinda cool.
but in the 90's, they decided to go ironic detached and started sucking.
(I think you might be confusing Bono as global mover and shaker international political figure in the 90's/00's with the actual band product.)
>>
>>131908776
lots of them were just jealous because U2 was at near Beatles stature in late 80's and dwarfed big in UK but miniscule elsewhere bands like Smiths and Cure.
>>
>>131908776
The Joshua Tree going multi platinum several times over kinda' says your wrong.
War was big too.
>>
>>131909118
No. They were in some batshit prot group.

Also these guys are from Dublin and who gives a shit?

They were always widely loathed in Ireland for being a bunch of pretentious, up their own hole posh boys

I already hated them before that. Bono has always been an obnoxious twat, and outside of the brief Zooropa-Passengers-Pop years, they've made nothing but generic arena slop. If it wasn't for those three albums, which of course their fans hated, they would be on the same artistic level as Nickelback or Train.
>>
As much flak as people give them today (rightfully so), in the 80s and especially 90s they honestly were a great band that put on spectacular shows. The Zoo TV and Popmart Tours were absolutely legendary. Also they weren't afraid to experiment with their sound and put out non mainstream shit like with Pop and Zooropa

Unfortunately post 2000 Bono got too high off his own fumes and started acting too fucking preachy while releasing generic buttrock radio friendly shit. Also them putting on that retarded album onto everyone's phones completely solidified them as the most pretentious assholes ever in music
>>
>>131907202
Gen X has been trying for decades to convince me this band is important.

Their not even hated right now seems like the peak hate for them was during the iPhone thing in 2014 over the years the hate for them has calmed down and it seems like a lot people are giving them their props now.

>in the 80's, they did over-the-top save the world shit but were actually kinda cool.
There was a lot of that in the 1980s. It's like Jackson Brown shit.

Faith No More's "We Care A Lot" as counter-cultural, pro-grunge lampooning of this makes a lot more sense in its own context, it all got very maudlin. A lot of grandstanding around it.

>>131908887
Oh yeah. Hillsong stuff. I had some friends growing up who were in a Christian rock band that would play in church, and they would make fun of it, then they'd do The Edge guitar ironically.
