>>131915812Wtf are you talking about? You again have displayed your severe lack in reading comprehension. I have been layering guitars for a long time and they've never sounded poor. There's some high frequency build up but nothing that cant be carved out. My latest experiment was instead of quad tracking, I simply do LCR panning but I decided to add overdriven over the distorted tracks and it sounded good, that was the entire point of my post, because it's a fucking prod thread and we're supposed to be discussing music production. Is that clear enough for you?

>>131913631I've recently started learning and was curious how long it took you guys to feel like you weren't just messing with things randomly but actually creating something with intent. Best I can do right now is follow some genre templates to throw together something passable but lacking inspiration. Any tips to make the learning curve more rewarding?
>>131927511like any intent at all: probably like a year or three to truly “get” the form and somewhat have that and some of the relevant theory internalized.biggest advice is to be process oriented and just be excited to have fun with the little things instead of the resulting song. especially when you’re in the first five~ years of it- only extraordinary people make anything good early on, and even ignoring that it’s far more beneficial to you to just get hyped about any little victory like learning to make a certain sound, how a certain synth works, a decent chord progression, learning to play a song…growth and skill will just naturally follow if you keep having fun making small consistent progress
>put limiter on master buss with output of -0.3db>didnt even have to push the input to get over -8 LUFSwe've broken new ground here /prod/ators
>>131927511I recommend the YT channel "EDMTips". Yes, he's selling a class and book and consulting service... but his free videos are extremely good too, especially the ones where he builds a track from scratch for genres, and the ones on mixing.
>>131927511I feel like it varies so much based on if you have prior experience in music
how do you get really reverb heavy "atmospheric" sound without making it sound muddy?
>>131928539Are you sending your reverb to a separate channel? That makes it easier to filter out frequencies from the reverb that make it sound muddy. You probably don't need them for the effect. Also try sidechain compression to cut the reverb channel when your main instrument plays, so it doesn't crowd it out.
sometimes I imagine what Bach or Mozart would have been able to produce with a modern DAW
>>131928539context context context the crowd chantsprobably your reverb settings. more likely your arrangement and or volume.what exactly is making MUDDY should be diagnosed first.more often than not i (a reverb expert) do nothing to the reverb other than manually gate it and narrow it, because it is already sitting exactly where i want it. for more prominent effect like reverb sometimes a big notch in the mids is necessary for certain algorithms. need of heavy eq more than likely means you’re fucking something else up.>>131928771when people (not you) say shit like this i know they don’t actually listen to music or know anything about its development over time.like 1000% unironically they as they existed in their own time would not be pushing envelopes. they’d be making youtube gimmick experiments like the virtual riot “i heard you like amens :3” shit.merely funny displays of extreme technical skill, but not necessarily artistic merit. both thetrue boundary pushers and best songwriters of modern music are mocked in this general. even chuzo and the boomer agree with me.

>>131930209by manual gating, i’m referring to printing the audio, chopping it and manually controlling where the tail ends. i also automate fades everywhere but that’s not what’s meant by that term, technically.before i print, i just use utility in ableton to automate the gain for a cutoff.this all is extremely important if you’re autistic about loudness and cleanliness, but for the neurotypical person it offers great benefit by way of consistency and being able to physically see and manually control the volume of reverb over time, which is extremely noticeable in cases where you’re introducing compression or distortion etc. those things can cause dynamic and harmonic buildup through those effects, and the overlap, if left uncontrolled, may bleed when playing at the same time as other elements (i.e your tail is too loud for too long, so it’s playing at the same frequency as something else: “mud” (too many clashing elements at a certain spot).>>131930213eq you nerd. automate it. mult it. get an intern and make him do it

how to make a good stab sound?whats your techniques
>>131938297my technique is between me, Chris Johnson of Airwindows fame, and my hardware setup.
>>131938089KILL YOURSELF you will never be a successful music producer, fucking retarded schizo tier delusional, it's something wrong with your ears, your brain or your audio system if you hear a significant difference between decent quality lossy vs lossless audio files
meanwhile anons don't hear a difference between digital software plugins vs real studio hardware, even when it's just an emulator that runs the firmware with no attempt at emulating the ad/da conversion, and they're calling me deaf, lmao fucking delusional assholes
lexicon 480L has fucking garbage overrated reverb algorithms, supposedly lexicon pcm91 has more or less the same algorithms but they don't sound anything alike, real professionals love the 480L hardware because of the sound of the analog signal path, not for the algorithm alone
it is a very basic technique. you can be very artistic about it in regards to attack, body and tail. that autism is better directed at what type of distortion and special effects you use. you should be running it through your sampler (NOT airwindows derez5 or bitglitter), tube or tape like color. a classic unit like an alesis or one of those multi effect racks are also necessary for your reverb. most people think of the classic hall sound but ime the room algorithms that most prominent sound designers had access to as old out from the 80s are VASTLY overlooked. that classic color is part of the sound even if you can’t hear the tail end. you may have some success and easier access to more esoteric sounds through various 90s guitar pedals but they tend to be more trouble than they’re worth imo. again: NOT valhalla or your autistic airwindows. the amalgamation of coloration several times over and run through your pres cannot be replicated in your DAW. put in the work to do your research and acquire the real hardware instead of endlessly looking for plugins that redditors tell you are “good enough.”if you take the craft seriously and want to be a professional like me you will listen.
put it this way: enough sound information comes through from youtube demos that someone with good ears can pick out top tier gear that a talented person can make legit sounding hit records with. for example i oneshotted my endgame vocal mic so i chose it while also comparing it to and rejecting numerous other candidates from deciphering very limited youtube content, often just using incredible mind powers to compare mics despite not having direct A/B comparisons. whereas amateurs are easily impressed by things that aren't as directly relevant to making good music while overlooking the things that are relevant. so amateurs might glaze serban ghenea's mixes but it's more like a cargo cult because max martin and some others tend to use him but the success of their songs isn't as directly attributable to serban as these amateurs believe. they blow it out of disproportion as if serban is in a league of his own untouched by all other mixing engineers, that his mixes are sonic perfection in all regards at least within the genre of pop music.

>>131939724KEK you're so fucked like you can't even imagine. you have to cope by telling yourself that i'm a schizo because otherwise it would mean that i do have the genius talent which you don't have and you have no chance of replicating, most people, including most anons, couldn't even get to any kind of respectable professional status within the music industry to the point of making more than a wagecuck job, let alone making the actual goated top tier kind of music. you're utterly inept, effectively RETARDED as far as making music goes, you can't learn to make goated music even if you spend your entire life trying to.

>>131935849Pretty good until the off-key beeps and added chords past the minute mark. Spoils the vibe a bit.
>>131936968>>131937066If I'm understanding you here, yes, but it's because your DAW processes audio in floating point (typically with 32bits of precision) and then exports to a fixed integer format like a signed 16 or 24 bit, so the extra information that would have otherwise lived above 24 or 16 bits gets truncated.
>>131944403And I probably shoulda said that intersample peaks are not the same as truncation (although intersample peaks CAN lead to clipping during playback). PCM is a band limited format and inter sample peaks are just part of how it works from both a mathematical and physics standpoint.
Does anybody just not understand how people can be alive and not want to create music or at least some other kind of art? i always see people recommending high pass filters to reduce the "mud" but it really does rob your mix of any energy. im going to try shelving instead.
>>131959473it’s because people are suggesting a broad eq cut to solve a problem they haven’t even identified.define “mud.” (i will).it is a buildup of frequency that is irrelevant to a single sound, leads to an undesirable tone of a single sound, or conflicts with another sound.“just high pass bro” only maybe addresses those things in specific scenarios.anyway look at your arrangement or sound selection first. reach for a bell cut first unless you actually just have a bunch of low end you don’t want and you know why you’re cutting it.
>>131959473It depends on the source desu. Pass filters are great but they do remove content rather sharply and can cause issues related to phase. The whole "high pass by default!" rule is so fucking dumb. if you have an issue like DC offset or rumble or something in a vocal track, then high pass. If you don't want to completely remove frequencies below or above a certain point, shelf.
>>131959651yeah i get that frequencies build up in higher energy pockets which leads to much higher amplitude than wanted. normally they sit around the 100-300hz range to 1khz-5khz range. but most instruments and the human voice rely on these frequencies to actual sit properly in the mix. i always youtubers recommending just to high pass in order to get rid of those "problem" frequencies whereas it just needs slight taming

My conclusion at the time on what Mozart in current year would make was Infected Mushroom, his Alan Walker or something mainstream IIRC (reason being "he'd make whatever is most popular/mainstream"). In hindsight I don't think either of us were right. Nowadays I'd say Whitearmor or some bullshit-level complex electro. But I actually know fuck all about what Mozart's music was like, I base it all on the assumption that it was technically impressive and very varied with some progressive elements (so I'd think that type of electronic music would lend him the most options to express himself), but I don't think I can actually remember any song of his off the top of my head lol. >>131962234sorry not sorry but this is way too naive to be smugposting. even just talking about the sonics before we get into the writing, you're leaving low hanging fruit like EQ moves that would make it sound better. there's no way that you're able to fully appreciate just how amazing the top 40 hits sound compared to amateur tracks. it explains a lot actually why anons have such strong opinions about music as an artform and how gear doesn't matter etc which aren't helpful to actually making great music because you can't even hear these things so you think you can just double down with this approach and assume that you'll eventually get good enough but in reality the top 40 hitmakers have been playing in a whole other league than you for decades.

my favourite tool at the moment
>recording my guitar with a bass effect sounds more real and better than using "state of the art" virtual bass instruments (MODO Bass 2)I don't know what to think. I guess I should shell out 200€ and just get a basic bass to record with.I am still yearning for a good virtual bass to use for my backing tracks. I don't want to play in the bass, I want to just play guitar and pretend I'm in a band.
>>131967245I tried Shreddage, but their strumming engine doesn't sound as realistic as Ample Sound's. As mentioned here >>131981755, I use those virtual instruments for easy backing track creation and found Ample Sound's through a virtual amp of my choice to be the most realistic sounding ones. Of course you need to put in effort to write in your stuff which takes longer than just recording the part yourself.Which video would you suggest which showcases its realism with strummed (harmonic) parts? Most of the videos show it playing melodic lines.

Why is it so hard to get the balance of the drums right? No matter where i put the fader, its either too loud or too quiet.
>>131987936>i always go overboard and make everything too busy for vocalsJust turn everything down then lol
>>131989221your frequency balance is off
>>131989259Do you mean its being masked?
>>131989349potentially. there's a whole checklist to run through.arrangement>sound selection>volume (roughly)."frequency" overlaps with those first two especially.if you can't get it to sit right just by adjusting volumes it's because you already fucked up one of those first two.e.g your kick isn't having impact because a bass is fighting for the same spot, or your snare or cymbals aren't cutting through either because they're not sitting in the frequency range they should be, or there's an instrument in a spot that would be going to those drums.also consider: if it sounds "weird" or you're getting a different balance on mono checks: check your phase and then circle back around to above.
>>131989425Ive probably just cut too much of the higher frequencies from the room mic. And I havent really fucked with the overheads yet. It's more than likely the bass is conflicting with the kick so ill probably have to sidechain it when I get home.

Do you have any /prod/ friends IRL?I was friends with a girl for awhile and we made weird electronic shit together. We even did an open mic night, letting me check that off my bucket list. She unfortunately moved away and we're on opposite ends of the country now. I collab'd with one dude online for a couple songs where he rapped and I produced, but he moved too. How does one make friends with people that wanna make music for music's sake? Any time I post online it's people being like "yo finna get out the hood with this one" and as a 35 year old fuck, I doubt that.

>>131987936It's a traditional case of "mixed by guitarist" syndrome. we get it, you play guitar, you're cool, turn your fucking retarded 200$ squire down in a mix. your snare is way quieter than your overall mix which it should be the opposite: drum bus should almost ALWAYS be louder than your guitar bus.

>>131999825just arpeggiate chords you already have, add notes from melody, 7ths, 9ths etc. at the end of phrases try diminished or augmented chords
hello i posted this last thread. an annon said it was a drunken rhythm. didnt know what that was and googled it and it seems right. my workflow my grid isnt tied to the bpm so the end of my bars dont land on 2 etc like 2.2 2.3 snares not on the 2 and 4 but some random shit but it ends up being 4/4 anyway. is the rhythm really that bad? ive spent 3 years doing drums like this and they all sound kind of off but i am able to groove to them but now im thinking i might be kinda delusional and only i can groove to them as the creator xD since i got flack lasttime. im worried since this is my workflow and most of them kind of have that off feel. i mixed the loop again and turned up the tempo abit to try make it groove better. is it really that bad? i am probably delusional it is on time in my head. this has been an eye opening experiencehttps://vocaroo.com/1bNPBNr5ucDZ
>>132001988bro just use the fucking metronome. you're not jamming with a band, you're recording loops in a DAW, why make things harder for no reason?
>>132002185in my head I noticed I liked my beats more when I do it this way so I've been doing it this way since but I guess I'm retarded and delusional
After cocking about with daws for about 6 years I actually want to sit down and do a whole album. I'm thinking ethereal ambient orchestral type of theme, I already have an album cover idea that can be a /p/ project. But I really feel like taking on an album alone is too ambitious. I can only play clarinet reasonably well, I'm familiar with piano and keys, but can't play them well. I also have a stylophone I'll want to use, and some other toy instruments. wish me luck y'all. Hopefully I can get a single out by the end of this year.
>>132002615glhf! anything goes!
>>132002475NTAThe real deal is to have a good groove WITH the metronome. Hint: you may stop to hear it when you lock it (and lose the tempo).
>>132002754hmm maybe ill try. my head bop has been my metronome. it might be a psychological phenominom that i can bop my head cuz im the creator and i know how to bop my head to it. might be good since ive been doing it this way for a while so it might be refreshing. ill try change up my workflow, it might inspire something. thanks
>>132002808dude that loop you posted is in 90 bpm 4/4 time
>>132002630Thanks, today is my birthday so I've got more inspiration than usual lol.
>>132002832aight, i dont know the bpm of my beats xD i program it like pic. i let fate decide my bpm. i know it usually ends up 4/4.
>>132002879105 bpm, so i guess my stretched bars make it 90 bpm
>>132002867hbd!

Help me choose between Reaper and Ableton. I REALLY like how light-weight Reaper is and how it opens it 2 seconds, and how easy it is to get. However, it seems like most production resources are made for Ableton. Also, since I'm new I'm pretty much stuck just trying to figure out what VSTs and sample libraries are good for the music I want to make; from what I understand you're pretty much good to go with Ableton out of the box. Sound-design-wise I suppose there is not much of a difference since that knowledge is universal. If it matters, I want to make techno, darkwave, post-punk, experimental/drone and record rock music. I also want to play live music at some point.
>>132001988it's not too bad, try a daw where there are no gridlines or see if there is a setting to disable them
>>132006277>If it matters, I want to make techno, darkwave, post-punk, experimental/drone and record rock music. I also want to play live music at some point.ableton. it's was literally made for playing music live. also, it has tons of cool Max 4 live devices which are perfect for electronic music. it's also easy to record stuff and generate ideas using session view
