we have many threads about music, but none about what we listen to music on. or if anyone was thinking about improving their listening experience or getting new gear they could ask for advice.

just a thread to show off your hifi gear, speakers, headphones, amplifiers whatever youve got. like a /g/ battlestation thread but for music

pic related my KEF speakers. nothing special but get the job done

also, you gotta balance the sound, not just blast everything you want louder and keep the rest the same

>>131952089
nigger having bigger diaphragms will lead to better bass. it's (scuse the pun) basic physics.
sure, planars will usually dedicate their own power supply cause you need more power to run them to the full resolution which makes them a slightly bigger hassle than IEMs but the clarity and the size of the sound is uncomparable. tbf most expensive IEMs i tried were only 100$, but if the quality difference werent notable, i wouldnt be writing this
>>
>>131952162
iems plug up the end of a tube
diaphragm size literally doesn't matter
>>
>>131952268
yes that's why by bigger diaphragms and drivers you need more power.
you can see that by the IMPEDANCE of any headphones. the higher the impedance, the harder it is to drive the cans through just your phone/pc aux jack. you need a dac for that.
you retards bottleneck yourselves so hard lmao
>>
dont buy anything from douk, fiio, wiim, or any of these new age chifi brands everything i get from them breaks
>>
>>131947776
some pc motherboards change frequency response by the output impedience they hold, which is solved by a headphone amp and dac. It's better than it was so it's not always needed, more depends on what you have that needs power really.
what headphones?
>>131951632
>are planar headphones better than IEM ones?
dan clark aeons, audeze lcd 2/x(5 if your a rich fag) are going to sound better than basically any iem you touch really, planar iems are mostly shit on for a number of reasons, the main issue with headphone planars is treble problems which is more so for some models like chinkfiman china slop, audeze's are notoriously dark and usually you want to eq to fix them
if your buying planars though you can't cheap out on chinese like fiio, they literally all break or have the worst qc in all of audio like hifiman
>>131952048
every audio product has distortion, if you only amp up you will make it a lot worse and start to clip or distort, thats why most eq profiles negative pre amp and adjust the major flaws down instead of only up. Use Peace + equalizer apo and use the "autoeq" to find presets

old speakers get kinda shit if you dont maintain them. the rubber goes, the fluid in the tweeter turns to glue and stops it working right, the foam insulation inside crumbles away and the paper woofers break down

but used stuff is always great value in speakers because people want new shiny shit so stuff from a decade ago is like 1/10 of the price
>>
>>131952776
you mean the paper cones inside the woofers. the actual woofers are magnets and rubber
>>
>>131952776
>eter turns to glue and stops it working right, the foam insulation inside crumbles away and the paper woofers break down
some are worse than others, a lot of good shit from the 80-2000s used rubber instead of foam to hold the driver, like paradigm and mirage and even if it's torn on the rubber edges it wont get fucked, happened to my monitor 7's. But tweeters are the real nightmare, all the ferrofluid shit like energy 22's are fucked en mass because of it drying out and it's like $200 cad + shipping per driver for one guy who fixes them
ironically enough most new speakers are just so insanely bad that usually it's still worth gambling on a 40 year old speaker out lasting them, considering companies like klipsch still make The sevens for like $1k and they were all mass failing in a year, or had static hiss because all their trash is made in china now, so depressing
>>
who makes the best speakers? the germans? the brits? the japs?

Depends on your personal feeling on how they sound in your space with your music. If you listened to rap with 30hz bass notes then yeah a subwoofer would be essential to get the whole impact of the music, but that is a whole rabbit hole to go down. I personally use oversized speakers and EQ extra bass response into them the same as "smart" speakers do and that's good enough for me.
>>
>>131952907
canada use to have api, which was a parent brand for paradigm, energy, mirage and some others that made shit that mogged even 10kilobuck speakers because they had access to state facilities that no other company had access to. But klipsch bought API and ran it into the ground, some of their stuff was pretty wicked. Stereophile had a review from some of the veritas line in the 90s that was said to mog $50k ones, but could be any of those countries really although probably not germans from any anecdotal memory
canada/jp/brits
now literally nothing is made in canada though so it would only be for an overall time reference
>>
>>131952944
i know psb used to use that giant sound room that some canadian audio science group owned. yeah if you look at the brands and who owns them now its like 2 companies own 90 percent of the well known classic speaker brands.
>>
>>131952963
>yeah if you look at the brands and who owns them now its like 2 companies own 90 percent of the well known classic speaker brands.
its very unfortunate, quite literally always just ends up ruining them and nothing good ever happens
It's starting to happen to headphones to, beyer sold to the chinks, sennheiser is probably going to get sold again, audeze got bought by sony, akg got bought by samsung purely for manufacturing and then made it a horrible pos waste of time
literally no one wants to enforce anti trust law anymore so it doesn't matter, just have to hope some new fags some how emerge like dan clark did in the 2010s for headphones, speakers probably impossible with the current market

i think klipsch got like 1 year in before they killed energy and mirage which is a real shame considering how unique mirages omni stuff was or energy's high end shit thats impossible to find now
>>
>>131952992
>company builds up brand value
>owner dies
>they drag the company through the mud making cheap shit but make 10x the money before people realize the brand is shit now

its an infinite money glitch

the based boomers get shit on because of how many of the vocal retard ones became caricatures of audio delusion. But the more grounded ones i liked a lot, art dudley's stereophile profile video is worth watching for that reason, guy reviewed like every speaker one could want, still ended up with flamencos because he liked them and his daughters/wife thought they looked cool. He wouldn't even soundproof his room because it would look gay

what makes big speakers better than small ones. surely i can just turn the volume up on the small ones and theyd be as loud as the big ones. is it some autism like the rigidity of the cabinet or thickness means less vibration

bass extension and bass volume are physically linked to cabinet size
>>

If you're going to add a subwoofer, or ideally two, speaker size matters much less. A lot of very expensive speakers are essentially a bookshelf speaker sitting on top of a passive subwoofer.

the later is in some form of humiliation ritual where they don't even like music anymore, if they ever did and just treat ASR like it's gospel while listening to music scores they hate. At least the boomers are having fun even if it's just blowing money on vinyls and overpriced tubes
It's so weird how it all essentially came from one garbage website from a man who was personally fired by bill gates for being a total retard, now larps like an audio expert while pushing his audience into chinkshit because of graphs/(clear bribes to certain companies)
funny seeing the two go at eachother when it's literally father and son, the son seething about his dads snake oil, while the kid repeats gospel about his harman 2019 ie target eq'd iems that hurt his ears

why can't people just be happy and enjoy the music, i thought that was the whole point after all

>surely i can just turn the volume up on the small ones and theyd be as loud as the big ones
You can't get loud bass without moving a lot of air. That's limited by the driver surface area multiplied by the maximum displacement ("xmax"). The driver clips if you exceed xmax and either breaks or just sounds like shit. And you can't make the cabinet too small either, because that increases the resonant frequency and if you try to drive it too far below its resonant frequency the efficiency drops to shit and you literally melt the voice coils when you try to play it loud.

the all ranges part probably means you care about bass and then it's basically just planars, so dan clark aeon rt, or lcd 2 used is probably your best bet. If you could stretch a bit more hd 800 doesn't have bad bass, it just doesn't have a lot but nothing images as well with as wide of a soundstage.
lcd2/aeon for electronic/pop/rock
hd 800 for classical/acoustic/asmr

hd 600 are good if you want to spend less, although they don't bass as well as the others but probably the most obvious hyper longevity headphone ever, regardless of price. but not nearly as good for bass as planars, albeit i'd take them over planars in some genres though
>>131955488
stereophile should have a review on most "good" speakers as far back as the 80s, and used is generally the only thing worth buying from 1980s-mid 2000s anyways. Modern powered speakers are very overpriced considering something as good used and passive can be free-sub $100 regularly
should generally just brand whore though, japanese brands are only good for their high end imported made in jp and are usually very exp. NA/Eu will have different selections but it'll be maybe 6-10 brands at most, less if it's under $1k

>>131961068
audio gear perception is the problem. Most normalfags think whatever is expensive on amazon is good, so thats how you end up with people thinking trash anc headphones are peak audio, and they think speakers are boomertech. all advertising to them is apple slop or wireless slop, mono channel wireless speakers or sound bars

for price/performance yes
if you don't want to deal with passive speakers that need external power (amplifier) then buying new powered, but more expensive speakers is still an option. They just tend to be chinkshit filled with qc problems(especially budget ones) but not everywhere is going to have a good used speaker market to buy from

That's mostly if not entirely for desktop audio though, basically all tower speakers are passive and you would use an amplifier anyways
