Why are millennials so insistent that they are one of the most important bands of the 21st century? They're just okay.
>>
no one thinks that about these faggots, they influenced no one and have had zero lasting cultural impact, literally forgotten indie landfill
>>
>>131959622
I wouldn't exactly call them important, but I do know there isn't a single zoomer band that comes close to Animal Collective in terms of originality.

Get the FUCK off my board right fucking NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Centipede Hz [Domino, 2012]
All too theoretically fun-loving communards nice up the hilarity, whereupon their base tells them to stop being such goofs already ("Moonjock," "Applesauce") ***

cuz...
it...
gets you laid

Zoomers are doing that thing too; it's a way of trying to shortcut rivalling Xers in having fame, recognition and relevance; it's like making a propaganda that you car is the fastest on Earth so that people maybe think about your car as reaching 120 mph instead of 100 mph, or instead when buying something saying that you're thinking about paying $200 so that in relation to the $250 for what the seller is asking you two end up closing the deal in $225 and "let's hear no more about it". It's bargaining fame, essentially.

>who is King Gizzard
>who is Magdalena Bay
What makes those zoomer bands? The members of those bands are millennials. And even if the argument was that they were only active recently, I think their fanbase is mostly millennials, and King Gizzard has been at the peak of their popularity in the 2010s, which was still a millennial musical decade. Magdalena Bay probably has a bigger genz following though.

>They're just okay
They had great potential.
But they weren't very disciplined.

So their songs were never fully developed.
Disciplined songwriters get a song to where it is good, then great, then they push even further -- and that's how the timeless classics happen.

But these guys stopped at good enough, unfortunately for us.
>>
>>131959622
only hipster and hipster-adjacent millennials know animal collective
>>

mm if you're actually curious I can try to explain, I'm a millennial and was a huge fanboy of these guys from 05-10. I think for a lot of us it was baby's first experimental music, in a similar way to how radiohead was hitting people a few years earlier. I think during the moment when you're in your mid teens and start having your musical awakening, you become receptive to a lot of stuff that's maybe just beyond comprehension or your own taste, like you're used to experiencing new things you don't quite understand yet, and that feeling becomes compelling. If you were having that awakening during the mid 00s and getting it through the whole indie thing happening at the time, anco just really hit all the marks. It's got the essence of the 00s indie shit, it's great to get high to, and they just leaned in really hard to using weird sounds as compositional elements, they maxed that shit out. Anco was all about finding secret layers, like every time you'd listen to Feels you'd end up hearing some new shit deep in the mix that completely changed your perception of the song as a whole. It also opened up a bunch of doors into some more truly experimental stuff, like they were the gateway drug to noise and glitchy shit for a lot of us. Plus the way they'd work their songs out live for like 2-3 years before putting out the studio versions, plus how every album felt like they reinvented themselves while maintaining their core 'sound', it became a super fun thing to follow. Idk man, it was just really fun stuff that felt genuine, both playful and heartfelt at the same time, super inspired and filled to the brim with creativity and fun ideas. Legendary run, but it's not surprising to me that it's lost on a lot of younger people, it was kind of a perfect storm given the landscape at the time
>>
>>131959622
To be fair, Radiohead also influenced no one and they are always on all time greats lists and rankings.

This. Most millenials don't even know who they are. The only people who listen to that trash are faggot hipsters.
>>
>>131959622
"Millennials"? It's rather a very small contingent of wannabe hipsters screeching into a void about them and NMH. They don't have really any musical relevance amongst the majority of the generation.

some music sounds good when you're exercising, some sounds good when you're falling asleep, some sounds good in the winter. The atmosphere and/or mind state you're in when approaching art has an effect on how you perceive it, and assistance from those outside factors doesn't de-value the art, it only enhances.
The tale as old as time tells you that weed can make music sound better. Nobody's pressuring you to participate, but you don't know more than what the history is telling you
>>
>>131959622
because they're cool and original and they don't give a heck what the plebeians think
>>
Was very surprised they seem rather forgotten today. I guess they're a bit weird to show up in algorithm playlists.
>>
>>131964805
the history tells me most praiseworthy people weren't potheads
>>
>>131965341
their modern reputation essentially rests upon the back of "My Girls"
>>
>>131965680
What does being praiseworthy have to do with anything. Most good musicians are bad people, always have been, always will be.
>>
>>131959622
It's from this weird era where hipster became the latest fad and they would go around praising whatever p4k was praising while acting like they personally just discovered the next best thing in music. Imo p4k was probably getting paid on the dl to promote certain bands because most of the shit they praise is absolutely terrible. Hipster types are a small subset of millennials though. They're probably too invested at this point and it would be too big of a hit to their ego to admit stuff like animal collective is actually dogshit.
>>
>>131965680
sounds to me like you just have a bias. You mentioned psychedelic, prog rock, and experimental indie but surely you know how prevalent drug use is across /most/ music genres
>>131965692
honestly think this is a big part of the problem with how they're interpreted by younger people. MPP hit crazy at the time because of how much of a shift in sound it was for them but they actually pulled it off gracefully. Nearly every album was a shift in sound but the MPP shift was bigger and somehow venn diagrammed the masses in with the experimental dorks. People get recc'd MPP to start or they just go to spotify and play the top few tracks and feel like they've got the vibe, but really they should start with Sung Tongs and move forward like everybody else did
>>
for me, it's sleep cycle
>>
>>131959622
But they aren’t even that popular with millennials. Most of their stuff besides MPP is pretty inaccessible
>>
John Cale, Vashti Bunyan, The Grateful Dead, and Björk all signed off on them being quality musicians.

Fucking retard. 1960s jazz musicians were taking LSD and smoking weed while writing some of the most timeless compositions of all time. Its not the only way to write or enjoy listening to music, but you're just being a contrarian faggot purely for the sake of being a contrarian faggot and not admitting it
>>
I was heavily into AnCo from 2011-2016 during my late teens and early 20s. It was honestly just the right time and place. Indie was at its peak in that general span of years. I was being a psychedelic goofball. If you were in your early 20s or attending college during the early 2010s, you know how fucking awesome life was at that time. Great economy, leftist woke dogshit had not yet really overtaken the cultural zeitgeist, and people were able to just explore and be hedonists. Their music has that exploratory, experimental format to it, so it just fit really well for a time when the overall culture of cities wasn't so depressing. Music seems to have been heading more toward a revival of heavier, rock-oriented flavors in the last 5 years or so, so the whole indie psychedelic shit isn't really that hot anymore.

jazz is a genre of noise "music" people pretend to like to look sophisticated
thanks for informing me it fits the pattern of druggie tunes

List some genres of music that are uber based since you seem to "have it all figured out"

what Emilie Autumn and old Vampire Weekend made, for example:

https://youtu.be/fjQJVnPdlcc

https://youtu.be/oNy6F-VIsos

what Grimes and Magdalena Bay managed to erect:

https://youtu.be/WizNXQGBMEk

https://youtu.be/ben9qDbrLYU

what Panic! At The Disco used to make:

https://youtu.be/QSLBRvv0_0w

https://youtu.be/evUC3RCy2UY

and Mindless Self Indulgence:

https://youtu.be/BjCjqgg0dXA

https://youtu.be/c2qS7y9tiSA

I could go on; not hard to sound magnitudes better than free form jazz; simply try to have a euphonic melody, and you're 9/10's the way there
