The four members of the band Talking Heads have each released a mini-playlist of their top 10 songs from the band's catalog.
Which members have the best and worst taste in their own songs? What are your thoughts on their picks?
>>
>>131987828
Jerry is once again the basedest mofo in the room.
>>
>>131987828
Tina wins for Pulled Up, fucking of course David has the worst taste lmao
>>
>>131987828
I hate the Talking Heads from what little I've heard from them

any fanboys mind linking the top track from each list for reevaluation?

based off these, as a non-fan, I judge Jerry then to have the best taste of them, I guess

You're straight up lying now.

Tina > Jerry > Chris > David
>>
>>131987828
>only one has this must be the place
wut? Is this a Creep situation where they hate the song?
>>
>>131988544
I skip around and skim until I hear the gist of what they're going for
this band seems to also make repetitive music, so as far as I could tell, I didn't miss much

I genuinely couldn't stand to listen to any of those except This Must Be The Place for very long, and I do hate wasting my time
>>
>>131988603
You are worthless. You should commit suicide. No one will care other than your mom who will feel relief.
>>
>>131988598
The Talking Heads is a band known for creating pretentiously deliberately off-putting music, so naturally, most of the members would not favor an actually euphonious song such as it, even if they made it themselves.
>>
>>131988598
there seems to be some perverse twist in irony, where often the most popular and beloved song by an artist is not rarely the one they hate the most
>work it, bitch
>this isnt a playground
>>
>>131988612
You should save such insults for occasions where one dismisses even something as nice as This Must Be The Place, which now has accrued two other separate endorsements ITT verifying its quality. Don't be upset just because I think your favorite band makes mostly garbage that's a worthless and unjustifiable timesink one would do well to efficiently evaluate.
>>
>>131988617
>The Talking Heads is a band known for creating pretentiously deliberately off-putting music
That's not even remotely true.
>most of the members would not favor an actually euphonious song such as it
They've each praised the song multiple times.
David and Jerry still perform it.
They talked about how much they love the song on their Sirius station.
>>
>>131988603
>I genuinely couldn't stand to listen to any of those except This Must Be The Place for very long, and I do hate wasting my time
you might know once in a lifetime too, from radio, etc. (if youre not a zoomer, idk)
>>
>>131988638
>That's not even remotely true.
That's literally the point of their signature talk-"sing" style.

>They've each praised the song multiple times.
>David and Jerry still perform it.
>They talked about how much they love the song on their Sirius station.
Come the fuck on nigga, literally ONE (1) member put it in his Top 10, cut the bullshit
>>
>>131988640
I'm at the tailend of late millennial

>you might know once in a lifetime
yes, I know that song, they play it on the intercom in multiple establishments, including my workplace for a spell

and I absolutely fucking despise it; shitty, hollow, meandering, primitive music and insulting vocals; it's the embodiment of just about everything wrong with the band
>>
>>131988680
kek okay, you do you, anon

ive just listened to psycho killer from stop making sense
for the first time in what mustve been a decade
fucking love it, but i get why david would hate it
its a couple of lungfuls of air

>insulting vocals
it... kind of is, and it should be
and you either feel like youre wielding it
or are on the receiving end of it
>>
>>131988652
>literally ONE (1) member put it in his Top 10
So that means they can't still like (or love) the songs? You say this as if it not being in their top 10 means they completely resent it. It's hard to pick 10 favorites out of an eight album discography.
>>
>>131988745
Like I insinuated, I don't appreciate music-as-lecture that intentionally antagonizes my sensibilities for pseudointellectual reasons and revels in subjecting me to dysphony. When I listen to music, I want it to sound good, and to feel good because it sounds good. It's not cool to sound like shit on purpose, even if you're vainly attempting to "challenge" the status quo.
>>
>>131988768
The ethos of their top picks suggests that song in particular runs contrary to their particular tastes. It could be #11 for all of them and that still wouldn't change the message of the snub.
>>
>>131988821
>david, is that you?
listening to cool water now
thats some heavy shit
your pick of number one is an artistic choice

i wonder if number two is number one, or if they are in no particular order
>>

>>
>>131987828
Jerry and Tina >>>
i knew David was gonna pick bullshit lmao
>>
>>131988850
>The ethos of their top picks suggests that song in particular runs contrary to their particular tastes
And if their tastes were just going based on popularity and fandom love like you're implying then they wouldn't have included Psycho Killer, Burning Down the House, or Once in a Lifetime either. And those songs as far as charts / streams go are much bigger than Naive Melody.
>>
>>131988878
?
No, I genuinely believe their picks are authentic reflections of their own personal tastes. I have stated multiple times that I believe they make such music on purpose because it yields them (perverse) pleasure. What shocks me is that even one member's taste effectively dissents from the band's evident mission (which I've elaborated elsewhere itt). Mind you, I know little about the band itself, and only summary information as well as what influenced such as LCD Soundsystem took as inspiration.

Nowhere did I ever mention the fanbase, excluding noting that they clearly are for people who wish to appropriate the unpalatable as a symbol of sophistication.
>>
>>131988933
>I genuinely believe their picks are authentic reflections of their own personal tastes
except for david
wouldnt put it past that guy, he'll pick the 10 WORST songs they made, just for the lulz
>>
>>131987828
Chris surprisingly with a fairly pleb list
David and Jerry have good ones
Lots of Fear of Music representation
>>
>>131989179
>david's list
meh, nothing but flowers and sax and violins on there tanks it. chris has i zimbra at least but stay up late kinda sucks. jerry and tina have the best lists all around
>>
>>131987828
I hope Talking Heads don't reunite to play because years ago at the R&R HOF they were terrible and they are only gonna be worse now. I got cheap David Byrne tickets this past summer and it was mostly good.
>>
For me it's Chris

Talking Heads 77 [Sire, 1977]
A debut LP will often seem overrefined to habitues of a band's scene, so it's not surprising that many CBGBites felt betrayed when bits of this came out sounding like Sparks or Yes. Personally, I was even more put off by lyrics that fleshed out the Heads' post-Jonathan Richman, so-hip-we're-straight image; when David Byrne says "don't worry about the government," the irony is that he's not being ironic. But the more I listen the more I believe the Heads set themselves the task of hurdling such limitations, and succeed. Like Sparks, these are spoiled kids, but without the callowness or adolescent misogyny; like Yes, they are wimps, but without vagueness or cheap romanticism. Every tinkling harmony is righted with a screech, every self-help homily contextualized dramatically, so that in the end the record proves not only that the detachment of craft can coexist with a frightening intensity of feeling--something most artists know--but that the most inarticulate rage can be rationalized. Which means they're punks after all. A-
>>
>>131989468
I get the sense from this passage that Robert doesn't care that much about the actual music when reviewing
>>
>>131989546
he mostly just cares about scene stuff and politics
>>
>>131989113
>he'll pick the 10 WORST songs they made
For the most part his list is NOT the worst stuff they've made.
If you want their worst stuff, listen to True Stories, which is aptly the ONLY album of theirs with 0 songs on any of their playlists.
>>
>>131989580
that's pseudointellectual and uncultured
>>
no book i read? gay

True Stories [Sire, 1986]
These songs were conceived for a movie, rarely an efficient way to initiate an aural experience. Yet they're real songs, not detached avant-garde atmospherics, and honest though David Byrne's sympathy may (I said may) be, they leach their vitality from traditions that demand more heart than he ordinarily coughs up. Interesting they remain. But no way the rhetorical gris-gris of "Papa Legba" or the evangelical paranoia of "Puzzlin' Evidence" or (God knows) the escapist solace of "Dream Operator" is gonna fascinate like "Crosseyed and Painless" or "Slippery People"--for one thing, Byrne lets us know what the new songs mean, which ain't much. Do they rock, you want to know? Oh yes they do. B

TS and Naked weren't even performed live and the band members wanted to kill each other during the recording sessions.

>TS and Naked weren't even performed live
Whether the songs were played live or not does not change my point that there are worse songs in their catalog.
>the band members wanted to kill each other
That was the other three. Leave Jerry out of this.
>>
>>131989800
this is like the third time I've seen this image

what's the QRD for a nescient?
>>
>>131989822
NTA but I think the implication is that the band was carried by Jerry Harrison, which is plainly bullshit
>>
>>131989845
it seemed to be that one listened mainly for Tina's bass lines. it sure wasn't Byrne's singing.
>>
>>131989845
that's obvious
that's not an explanation/justification of its meaning
>>
>>131989884
If you're talking about his roll musically, he was in charge of a lot of the synthesizer work, production in live shows, remastering, and he was the one who found all of the touring members for their live shows up to and including Stop Making Sense (which even Byrne admitted).
If you're talking about the bands lore: Chris / Tina never got along with David and they've constantly taken jabs at eachother over the years (moreso Chris than David, but point stands). Jerry's the only one that never got involved in it.
He's a cult figure in the band.
>>
>>131989926
Chris never got over it that his drumming didn't progress past the club level and that Byrne used guest drummers on "Burning Down The House" and Naked because he couldn't cut it.
>>
>>131987828
Somehow I'm not surprised that David has the worst picks.
>>
>>131989940
>Byrne used guest drummers on "Burning Down The House"
You mean the percussionist? Scales?
The band had side percussionists on plenty of songs. The main drummer and the hand percussion player have different rolls in a song. You can hear that in plenty of the Funk or R&B they were influenced by.
Obviously I'm not saying Chris was in the right for the way he acted but still.
>>
>>131989955
His solo albums are total Redditcore which proves he's not much by his lonely.
>>
>>131989940
also much like Cuckgau he's a total cuck and one of those "the wife wears the pants in this household" guys. you know the kind. they're usually into being pegged with a strap-on.
>>
>>131990016
the Internet has exposed just how many of these fags are out there
>>
>>131990002
Rei Momo wasn't bad. A salsa album was an interesting idea, at least.
>>
>It has been commonly asserted that Weymouth learned to play bass from listening to Suzi Quatro albums, which she has said is not the case and instead cited Wrecking Crew bassist Carole Kaye as her main influence. "I checked out Quatro in the beginning, but she just acted like another one of the guys onstage. I related more to Carole Kaye as a wife and mother."

On the back of TH77 they still refer to Tina by her full name of Martina.
>>
>>131987828
david byrne is an autistic retard for that list. all the lists suck ass though.
