Susumu Hirasawa the legendary Japanese composer basically called music theory nonsense.
>>132024133Theoryfags btfo...
>>132024133=\=he means theory alone can't compose good music. Proven by theory nerds with 0 creativity, who make the blandest music possible. But he is wrong that it doesn't make it easier.
Well it's true. Howlin' Wolf didn't know music theory. He probably couldn't even read. In much the same way as mathematics is just a scribing down of relationships that innately exist in reality music theory is just the pinning to the page of things that are already there. The theory is for people who lack the talent to understand intuitively the principles on which the theory is based.
>>132024133Bach just vibe-coded the counterpoint bro, music theory is pointless just feel it out
logic in music making should be used as a means to an emotional end.
what's the point of theory? why would I learn any of it? what does it even measure? just play your instrument more
>>132025537Do you think you're so intuitively talented that learning a bit of theory would taint your composition? All of the anti-theory sentiment here seems to revolve around the assumption that these anons were just born with such scary talent that they need to take pains to avoid being influenced or formally trained, which strains credulity if you've ever been in one of our sharethreads. A lot of you niggas could use some education!
>>132025638what does 'a bit' mean? i doubt I can just invest 4 hours into theory and get any gains from it. It seems like a huge distraction, when there are many other skills to practice. Especially on guitar, where you can just look up chord shapes directly, and where countless albums are entirely written around intuitive shapes and standard chords. If you can't hear what leads/solos and chords work together by sheer experience and taste, just quit
>>132024133Not even close to what he said
>>132025537It helps you guess more quickly which note will sound the best if you add it next
no one gives a shit
lmao>On a 1994 trip to Phuket, Hirasawa went through a "Thai shock", amazed by the country's culture, namely its transgender cabaret performers, some of whom he would invite to be singers on his albums and guest performers in his concerts throughout his career. After many trips back to the country Hirasawa grew to be increasingly identified with the Thai trans community
>>132025638Yooo that's me. I'm scared to be influenced
>>132025770you're more obsessed with Japan than the people you're mocking
>>132025770Die in a fire
i hope his next album is completely left-field
>>132024133That is a horrible translation
>>132024184>nor does it make composing music any easier
>>132027165explain what is wrong about it, or are you just pretending to know japanese?
>>132025741>If you can't hear what leads/solos and chords work together by sheer experience and taste, just quitBrute forcing scales and common chord progressions by trial and error is objectively less efficient than just looking them up. This is exactly what I mean by "a bit of theory". It's not impressive that you wasted a bunch of time dicking around to figure things out yourself that you could have read in the mel bay book
Music theory just reduces the amount of time it takes to achieve basic competence on an instrument. Doing things the hard way and ignoring theory just so you can pretend to be a virtuoso prodigy who don't need no formal instruction is retarded. It's just an ego trip for people with middling talent on an instrument to LARP that they're so special they can't possibly benefit from the experience of the generations of musicians who came before them
>>132024133his last album was superb
>The (...) materials (...) are inside you.Only if you have a lot of time and/or is extremely skillful and thus by that opportunity have discovered it all alone. (Yes), not knowing about more advanced music theory doesn't prevent one from creating music that is interesting to them or others. And (yes), not even knowing nothing about music theory doesn't prevent one from doing it either. But the probability gets (a lot) lower. (Truth is), most people that talk about how music theory knowledge is not sufficient for creating interesting music or how it's not even necessary for it have at least a basic knowledge of music theory and were helped by that knowledge to compose their works. They could have composed everything they have composed without any knowledge of music theory, and in fact they could have composed any piece of music without any help of music theory knowledge. But the probability would be so low, that it would be a talk of randomness. Like arranging the words (in exact correct order) of a dictionary or of the Encyclopædia Britannica just by choosing random letters by any method for that (picking cut-out letters, typing on a keyboard, saying the letters out loud, fingerspelling from a hand alphabet etc). It's not impossible, just extremely improbable. Learning music theory does make composing music easier because it gives you knowledge about composition you (obviously) (simply) didn't have before. The giant majority of these people know music theory to a reasonable degree and would probably never have composed their works without the help of it. (1/2)...
>>132028006...(2/2) And just to mention, I'm not someone who has wide knowledge in music theory and also not even someone who enjoys music whose composition was eased/helped by knowledge in advanced music theory and that would likely not be composed without that knowledge. I generally enjoy music that was helped to be composed by very basic music theory (and that likely wouldn't be composed without that help). Major scale, minor scale, modes. That's it. I don't even understand time signatures well. I don't even read sheet music. I only know things about one instrument, basically speaking. And by the way. I don't know who Susumu Hirasawa is.
>>132025770says the retard who took the time to reply
>>132025770Yeah, I too have a feeling that some Westerners get excessively xenophilic for no true reason.
>>132025537You wouldn't be playing your instrument if no one with music theory knowledge envisioned the building of your instrument. It didn't fall from the sky and slided on the ground to a store so you could take it home or a distribution center so you could click "Buy now" and wait until someone handed it at your door. Play your instrument more but remember what an instrument is, why it was made like that and what it means to even be a instrument for something. You are not making music or sounds in a unrestricted way. And you surely wouldn't too if you used any electronic devices to endeavor to sound "boundary-breaking" and "limitless" or "innovative". You're using technology others developed meticulously to help create certain sounds or ease certain activities. That others thought about and planned to be like that. You're not inventing the possibilities, you're just making use of those that others made available through your instrument. It's not like playing your instrument while being ignorant in music theory how you suggest to be (but sincerely, probably are not) is a state of tabula rasa where you're freer to make more boundless and personal stuff. It just means you're more ignorant of what you are doing really, be it whatever it is. "Why would I learn any of it?". As if you knew actually nothing. Which is very unlikely. You probably already know some of it, even if little. And thus you can't say "any of it" without it being nonsense. You would learn "any" of it for the same reason you learn (about) most in life. To help you.
>>132025537essentially it's using probability to trick people into liking your music. it's the pick up artist of music.
>>132024133yeah yeah shut up you dumb knockoff chinamanthe reason you have anything "inside you" is because you've heard, on repeat, thousands of hours of (western) harmonies that have taken many centuries to develop. you're just a neural network who is remixing stuff you've heard before.
>snusnu hiroshimaokay
>>132025537What's the point of ignorance? Why would I deprive myself of theoretical knowledge? What does it even generate? Just learn basic theory if it's something available. You can (be helped to) do an enormous amount of stuff with just very little music theory.
That's all so cliche, I don't even have any words for that. Was he replying to someone? Is that tumblr? And maybe the translation has mistakes and changed the sense of what he originally said anyway; it could be a less annoying text.
>>132027165i know japanese and that is a perfectly reasonable translation
>>132024133>basically called music theory nonsensenonot at alla composer said what almost every artist and composer says: you have to take a leap somewhere, and its often very personal, private, and random.thats it.
>>132024133>basically called music theory nonsense Except he didn't, he just said music theory =/= good music, which is obviously true.
