The Dream of the Blue Turtles [A&M, 1985]
Not since Paul Simon's dangling conversations has a pop hero made such a beeline for the middlebrow cliché. Romantically he runs the gamut from if-you-love-somebody-set-them-free to each-man-kills-the-thing-he-loves, and of course he doesn't ignore the cosmic side of things--"There is a deeper world than this/That you don't understand." Speaking of deeper worlds we don't understand, I'm pleased by his pro-miner sentiments, but wonder why he has to (my italics) "_hope_ the Russians love their children too," since I've always assumed they do. And displacing the Police's sere dynamics we have bathtubs full of demijazz, drenching this self-aggrandizing and no doubt hitbound project in a whole new dimension of phony class. C+

As a solo act yes he made terrible AC slop.

that was totally the 80s thing to think mock-Baker Street saxophone on a track made you sophisticated

and of course he had to get the obligatory "whine about Thatcher" cut on there for that ultimate 80s Brit pop cliched touch

it was all for show, these guys voted for the Tories even though they'd never admit it

85 was a meh year for music. i looked at his 85 Consumer Guide list and noticed how bland a lot of that stuff was.

A lot like 1974 or 1997 in that regard

just not a lot of inspiration that year

86 was a lot better, even more when you consider any number of classic metal albums he didn't review, but even without those it would still be a far more interesting assortment of albums than 85.

yeah 97 sucked but 74 wasn't that bad, it was only slightly weak compared to the rest of the 70s
>>
>>132044521
1986 is just so stacked musically that it's almost comical, especially compared to the year prior

Quite a few 86 albums were actually recorded in 85, eg. Master of Puppets.
