How do you know if your songs are good enough before playing them in front of anyone? Hell, how do you even get to play anywhere at the beggining?I've been in a couple bands myself, recorded some stuff as well, but I never really got to engage with the local scene as much as I've wanted. And still every time I get into a new project I ask myself the same questions.Does this shit happen to you or am i just retarded
>>132044689Could be everybody you tried to work with is retarded. Lots of people dont really care
>>132044689You're completely retarded. Confused enough to post a question about life to fucking /mu in earnest...just do your thing. You will never make money, you will never have a "record deal." Music is dead man. You're about 40-50 years too late. You're out here posting a custom wojack man. Way too far gone. Play your instrument and enjoy yourself.
>>132044708They most probably are, but so am I. I'm quite shy so I don't really speak with as much people as I'd like to
>>132044775Damn man I just want to play music with other people, who said anything about money or record deals? Music may be dead but I enjoy the sense of community i guess.>custom wojak>clear screencap
>>132044819There is no community. There is ego and ladder climbing through social signaling. No one is playing music to simply play music. First lesson. Second lesson is that you'd better like drinking, doing coke, and fucking around with total morons who will rope you into the most retarded, backwards shit you've ever dealt with in your life. If you're in a big city, forget it, and if you're not in a city, also forget it. Get your friends together to fuck around, and then watch the foundation rot in real time and crumble while you hold the bag. After that, move onto the next group of people where the exact same thing will happen in a new way. Eventually you'll have leapfrogged to a lily pad with some other frogs that have been through the same things that you have, and either you or they will do something uncouth and that will end the same as the rest as well. Lesson 3, HAVE FUN BEING IN A BAND (it isn't fun).
Simple. You play all of the instruments yourself.
>>132044994sounds like maybe you're the moron?being in a band is fun
>>132045113I was, because I was in a band. Now I'm big and strong and mentally stable (obviously).
>>132045275>>132045113I'd like to clarify this one slightly- I was indeed a moron, because I thought being in a band might be a cool thing to do but it was 2015. I stayed in bands until 2025 and hated myself for it, because being in a band is FUCKING RETARDED.
>>132044689Learn how to spell "beginning" before you even think to question how to make the 17 million ever-changing parts that make up a band function with any modicum of efficiency.
>>132044689>good enoughyou're not Steely Dan, with the best players on the planet, right? you're just a band. does the band like the songs? if yes, go play. if no, keep working at it.just remember:do it for yourselvesyou're not going to make your fortune from it, so it has to be meaningful to youotherwise it's just an exhausting job with very low pay
>>132044994>There is no community.in THE MUSIC BUSINESS. But there is great community in the music playing community.
>>132045307>being in a band is FUCKING RETARDEDbut why? i get the feeling you've never been in a band and don't play an instrument. maybe you're a dj?
>>132045434>>132045491BOT THREAD
>>132044689>write songs>analyze everyone's taste and decide on a style that everyone can agree on>try weird ideas before you shoot them down (unless they're physically impossible)>direct them and boss them around>compliments and praise>practice 10x what you feel like>record demos to send to venues>listen to and discuss other artists' music together
>>132046179>dont hate on other bands in your area too much. like acknowledge their flaws but dont get too happy shitting on them, it creates a false sense of pride
>>132044689Bands in the last 25 years are all trust fundies and nepo baby crap.
Don't listen to these demoralizing faglords. Start a band because what else are you gonna do, sit and mope around?
>>132044689>How do you know if your songs are good enough before playing them in front of anyone? You don't / delusion. Sometimes the only way to know something is right or wrong if to try.
>>132044689if you really wanna make it dont join any band.
>>132045426>>132046179>>132046191>>132046543>>132046563Thanks for the actual advise, you guys are cool
>>132046615Who said anything about "making it". I'm in a band because it's fun
>>132046782then nothing matters, I have no advice for you
>>132044689>How do you know if your songs are good enough before playing them in front of anyone?Ive seen enough shit noisecore openers to know that the bar is low right now (one band member i spoke to even bragged about never practicing, just playing live). I still prefer seeing those bands to the stupid indie bands in my city because the weird/shitty bands have no ulterior motive wheras its painfully obvious the indie bands are just trying to get pussy and look cool. Like >>132046563 said, you won't know until you've spent some time playing them amongst each other and to audiences and unless you hold off on playing live/releasing stuff until you're cracked like fugazi did, you'll probably come up with a lot of shit before you write anything you're happy with. Look at david bowie or converge's first albums compared to their best material. One other thing: if your bandmates aren't serious or don't practice, pack it up and find new ones. Division of labor makes being in a band 1000 times easier and unless you're trent reznor you will need it to hone your skills. I can't fathom why someone would join a band if their heart wasn't in it but it's common enough to warrant warning. If the music is an end in itself and you hit it off with your bandmates, all the scene/booking/lack of money bullshit can be put up with
>>132047190Thanks, best answer so far.I guess rehearsing tons and trying things live is the move then.I've got some good people playing with me right now, what's hard is finding a sound that feels yours. You say the bar is pretty low nowadays, and I agree, but somehow it seems harder to stand out as well. There's too many mediocre artists to filter out the ones that may be worth keeping up with in the future
>>132044689In the 90s:>you and four retarded friends start a band>rent is dirt cheap and you each work 10 hours a week at some dumb fucking part-time jobs>they didn't do credit checks or even really give a fuck about your income back then, live together in some fucking house>spend all your free time practicing and experimenting>spend the rest of your free time actually playing at gigs2026:>you and four retarded don't have time to practice>rent is literally your largest bill every single month>even a full-time job does not qualify you to pay rent, and you don't have the credit history anyway>spend all your time working and responding to random crises (car breaks down, family member is sick, friend needs help)>spend the rest of your time preparing for workBasically the problem is that jews sold your future to foreigners and the government literally cannot stop printing money for Israel.
>>132047992Anon's right. Foreigners are forming nugaze and sludge bands right as we speak. I've seen it myself.
>>132048086I'm so sick of spics and jeets living off government handouts and churning out British punk rock CDs. Our tax dollars hard at work, if you'd believe it.
>>132047938Definitely, any kind of fire you can light under your ass will improve your cohesion so I recommend getting as many shows as you can take on. I think I used to share your perspective of shit artists drowning out good ones but when I started playing a lot of shows I found a lot of local bands who I had no clue existed and now look up to. Personally when I began i was under the impression that the only two scenes that existed in my city were tough guy straight edge adjacent hardcore and boring indie but since then I found that there is a huge emo/post hardcore scene and a lot of the bands are basically making prog music which is much more my preference. I wish you luck and I think as you go along you'll also find a scene you can relate to and take inspiration from in some way (unless wherever you live truly sucks, in which case you can just mog all the other bands)
