yeWax or Oil?

What do YOU like better?
I don't wanna listen to the youtube silca shills
>>
>>2054955
oil.
wax doesn't last long enough
>>
>>2054956
this plus i'm not a bitch and also ride when wet
>>
Wax for me. You don't have to use silca, but if you do the math, putting together your own DIY version isn't really worth the extra effort, but if you're a sperg, sure, knock yourself out.

"Wax" in a bottle isn't wax, it's just the same mess with a different label.

>>2054956
You're doing 250+ mile rides every day and you only have one chain, or what? Quick link and a chain swap is faster and easier than dribbling lube constantly and wiping the mess up and waiting for it to dry and (etc). Just keep 2 chains and do 'em both at once when needed. Ez pz.

Like, yeah if you're making commercial quantities of this shit, then maybe it makes sense, but one bag of pre-mixed silca brand wax should be good for like 10+ years of waxing, so why bother buying $200 worth of bulk materials when you can just spend $40 once and by the time you need it again it's going to be the mad max universe anyway so you'll have bigger issues to worry about.
>>
Wax
I ride in the wet, and ride a lot. but wax is really not that much effort idk why the fuck people sperg out so hard about it like its some impossible chore to wax a chain
Shits clean, runs nicely and doesn’t attract sand to form a grinding paste. I live by the coast and that’s probably the biggest thing I want to avoid
>>
>>2054965
It sounded crazy to me when I first heard about it.

It's a much bigger pain to clean a drivetrain, that's why it's not really worth doing it unless you're replacing the chain and the cassette because getting it clean enough to start with wax takes hours.
>>
>>2054959
you dont understand
if you wax you are obligated to follow every autistic microwaxing protocol
however if you lube you can just drip lube on old contaminated lube and ride on

if you reuse the wax pot more than 14 times john from silca will presonally come rig your carbon hookless wheel to implode during your next 40mph descent
>>
>>2054955
I use wet oil instead of dry oil because i ride in the rain. Also, every 200-300 miles I wipe the chain with a rag then oil on top of oil because singlespeed, that's about one every week or two, then maybe like 2-3 times a year i deep clean the chain by popping the master link and throwing the chain in a Gatorade bottle and mineral spirits then oiling it with what wet lube was on sale, last time that was a big bottle of muc off all weather, it's kind of shit though, it feels fast on a fresh oiling but it gunks up real dirty. My favorite oil unironically has been 80w90 gear oil i had laying around

drip wax is literally less maintenance than oil based. The only hard part is stripping a fresh chain to bare metal for the initial application. And even that is as simple as leaving a chain in mineral spirits for a week then flushing it with degreaser and water. After that you just drip on the wax on every link like you would a oil lube. zero maintenance outside of that and your chain lasts forever.
I never wipe my chain, never dunk it on boiling water, nothing.
>>
>>2054975
Is that the wax lube you use in pic?
>>
>>2054976
yeah squirt drip wax
smoove and ufo drop are probably better but the only difference as far as I can tell is application interval (you dont have to reapply as often)

I wax my chains because I prefer not having grease smears loaded with forever chemicals all over my gears, my frame, my clothes, my skin, my walls, and my floor. I have never considered whether it's more or less friction compared to whatever else is out there. It's low enough friction that the "chain lube" requirement is satisfied, and the rest of the argument is just hobby drama arguments between autistic, argumentative incels.

Damn son who pissed in your pfas cereal

I bought the Silca kit and it's nice and works really well and all. It does probably save maintenance over time. But at the end of the day, you have to have a special little fucking crock pot for waxing your chain. I just wound up tossing it when I moved because I didn't have the space, or desire to pack up a oily/waxy crockpot, and moved back to the old way. I just don't think it's worth the investment unless you are able to use the thing in bulk. Like bare minimum, both you and your wife ride, and maybe you have some kids that you are grooming to ride as well. Or better yet, you are the guy in your friend group that has one, and you'll wax anybodies chain for like $5. Shit, I'd kill to have a riding group where I know a guy that I can pay $5 to wax my chain.
>>
>>2055136
Hi. I'll wax your chain, but no kissing
>>
>>2055136
I just buy bags of wax and then boil it in water in a normal pot it works fine idk what the crockpot meme is about im not buying that shit this works fine
>>
>>2055141
Ok, but then you still need to have a "pot" to keep the wax in. It doesn't matter if it's a saucepot or a crockpot. You have a messy waxy pot to store. And if you're cleaning the pot out every time, you're just eliminating most all the benefits of it. You're wasting wax, and you're spending more time setting up and cleaning out a pot than you would with the classic way for marginal durability gains at best.
>>
>>2055138
How about 10 instead of 5? the kissing is my favorite part
>>
>>2055142
No you don’t are you not reading what i fucking say
Leave the wax, in the bag. put the chain in the bag. Put the bag in a pot of water on the stove
it works very well
>>
>>2055151
>>2055142

Ok this was aggressive i didn’t have my zyn before typing this my first post was unclear and im a nigger
But ye the bag method fucks
>>
>>2055142

Can buy a super cheap pot for less than $5 USD and I really hope that you have enough space to just keep a spare pot. Hell after it cools down you can just throw it in a plastic bag
>>
>>2054956
I have an excessively redundant lubrication schedule with either type. I was using effeto mariposa drip wax for a couple years. Now I have immersed wax (Silca SS) chains but I top up more frequently with the drip product than do
a full rewax

I just use motor oil on my chains because it works and it's what I have readily available anyways
>>
>>2055297
I just throw out the entire bike and have my domestiques order me a new one
>>
obviously you need to use the heaviest nastiest blackest grease you can find, preferably one that already has sand in it. that's how i've found every bike i've ever bought or encountered

in reality i just use vaseline on the chain and wd-40 or a similar liquid penetrating oil on everything else, but every used bike i've ever bought and every bike any of my friends own are fucking covered in that black grease they dont even use on cars anymore

>>2055151
>sous vide your bike wax
now THIS is fart huffing

>>2055371
i hate you
>>
>>2055371
This. I use 5w40
>>
>>2055371
I use chainsaw bar oil thinned with mineral spirits as per the bikegremlin recipe.
been working nicely for several years. plus, a $6 quart of oil and a $6 quart of spirits is like 2 lifetime supplies. I have allergies and put it in my empty nasal spray bottles (washed first) and give them away to my friends.
>>
>>2055393
why not just use the chainsaw oil straight up considering it is literally oil for a chain that goes on much finer teeth and at way higher speed than your shitty bicycle (and also has to >COPE with getting wet sawdust into it, not just rain or street grit)

>Chainsaw (bar) oil
>These oils have very good adhesive characteristics (they stick to the chain well). They provide good rust protection and very good resistance to water washout.
>The main flaw of chainsaw oil is it tends to stick a lot of dirt as well. That is why it’s a good idea to dilute it with mineral spirits, or diesel, usually in ratios from 3(oil):1(diesel), to 1:4 ratio, depending on oil’s viscosity. This will allow for the oil to reach the important area between the rollers and pins, then (partially) evaporate, leaving slightly thicker chainsaw oil where lubrication is needed, but away from the outside of the chain where it could attract dirt. The outside of the chain should be cleaned as soon as the (diluted) lubricant is applied – before the solvent dries.
>>
>>2055422
i have one of these tiny combs and its fantastic for grooming the 'tache

though
>chainsaws are never exposed to harsh conditions, dirt, dust, grit, or anything else like my 2500$ racing bike that i only ride on clear days is! also chainsaws dont use pins or have small moving parts like my bike does! my bike is SPeciIAL and i HAAAAAAVE to dilute the oil because internat man said so!!!
i will continue just using vaseline btw
>>
>>2055421
Stop licking your chain
>>
>>2055433
>Brain so fucked he thinks he just needs to stop licking
Shouldn't have licked so much. Too late now, though
>>
>>2055422
all I do is dunk my chain in a crock pot for 5 minutes but apparently I'm the crazy fred who engages in absurd rituals for my watts, while normal people just raid the local cosmetology school for equipment and do a breaking bad in their backyard with beakers full of extremely specific ratios of obscure petroleum isolates, if only I could "get a grip" and do things to my chain with the mac cosmetics catalog that are still technical violations of anti-sodomy laws in several states
>>
I got the silca secret drip wax thing on sale and it has been pretty good so far. It came in a combo pack with a chain stripper bottle.
I think the best part is that you can just spray some water over the drive train and wipe it dry. Reapply a little bit of wax. With oil that always got a bit messy.
>>
>>2055478
>minecral spirits
>obscure

XD
>>
Still trying to figure out if there is any tangible advantage to going through with all this wax crap rather than just oiling your chain which has worked fine for billions of people.
>>
>>2055519
Taking a shit in an open sewer has worked fire for billions of people too, but it turns out once people get accustomed to nice things, they like it better that way.
>>
I had a crash the other day and was in too much pain to ride and needed to put my bike in someone's BMW to get home. It sucked, but having a spotless drivetrain that can be handled with ungloved hands was nice, one less thing to be stressed about when you're in a tough spot, literally just toss the whole thing in with no tarp or old towels or garbage bags, because it won't leave a mark
>>
>>2056868
lol
>>
>>2054955
I use a belt drive, so neither.
