>iso vs real degreasers
its not great. iso is good for surface cleaning but has a hard time penetrating fine cracks. actual penetrating degreasers and lubricants do special chemical shit to actually draw it in through the grease and break it up. iso will fuck up and destroy it but only wherever it initially touches and won't seep in much further.

it wont fuck up your bike but iso just isnt effective for the kind of shit people use hardcore penetrating solvents for and isnt good for soaking either since it's literally volatile i.e. leave it out and it becomes less powerful as it wafts away

1ce more iso is great and you should always have some around for surface cleaning but for shit like chains or getting through cable sheaths or w/e get proper penetrant (and dont waste your penetrant on surface cleaning either)

I used to buy the panaracer special colors every year but they killed off my go-to (700x32 slick) so I am just riding black on black now from pirelli. also used to like veloflex but they died. basically all the stuff I like has been taken away from me, boo hoo yes I am mad

incredible levels of tryhard faggotry
>>
>>2070449
Funny how the definition of tryhard faggotry changes every 10 minutes. I remember the good old days when black everything was tryhard
>>
>>2070452
jet black tires also count as tryhard, as do people who hose theirs down in clearcoat or w/e to make them extra shiny. a tire should be a sorta dark dull gray and not glossy except immediately after washing and before completely drying
>>
>>2070453
This sounds incredibly try hard
>>
>>2070416
Would be cool if you match them to your frame , until they get dirty.
>>
>>2070416
testing shows they're all weaker grip than black. but maybe it's not important to how you ride
>>
I'm building a 1x11 bike.
Does the chain line need to sit exactly on the middle sprocket?
Right now it sits on the smaller sprocket after the middle one.
>>
>>2070471
If "chainline" is part of your vocabulary you should just go with 2x, 1x is for smoothbrains who got filtered by derailleurs
>>
>>2070471
I mean, presumably it doesn't matter because if you do 1x10 or 1x12 (or any even number), there is no middle cog.

Hello /n/ewfrens
>>
>>2070471
You want it as close to the middle as possible. You could probably get it close by getting a shorter spindle lenght if you're doing this with square taper.
>>2070473
Great technical knowledge. Real helpful. Can you go suck start a shotgun and report back how that went?

chainline being offset towards smaller side reduces rubbing on the bigger cogs

noob retard here. I have been trying to get into this as a hobby for years.
just bought a used bike. Love it, but couple of minor issues that I think I can live with.
>5'9
>30in inseam
Sizing has always been weird. my first road bike was 56mm and it hurt to saddle the bike off the seat. The current one is 54mm which is fine, I can saddle the bike with all my weight on my feet, but my junk is on the top bar. I understand that older bikes or kinda like this I think.
My understanding is that the seat needs to be at a height so that my legs can be nearly full extended on the down pedal. So that is where the seat is. Bike doesn't feel too small, but maybe it is idk. I got toe clips because I got tired of getting my feat on the wrong side of the pedal.

>maintenance.
should I just remove the chain and soak it in degreaser? don't think about it? I was just going to use simple green but everyone online has opinions. I want something that is cheap and I can get at the store.

>>
>>2070518
Sorry then, I am wrong. Thanks you, I learned something new. Found similar info from wolf tooth that your chainline should be 2mm out towards the smaller cogs. This makes me feel better about the chainline I got on one of my builds and gonna know now for the next 1x im gonna do
>>
>>2070517
You have me doubting myself here but that looks like a bike for someone who's 6 feet tall, not 5'9

you tell me. I seem to be able to ride it just fine, its not unconformable. But I don't know what I don't know. My fat ass hasn't been able to take it on long rides just yet. But the <5mile rides I have been taking have been fine. I am a complete road bike noob.

>does this hurt the bike?
I hate these hanging bike spots, but that's what they have at my job
I recently got this front wheel and wouldn't like to damage it, is is okay to park it like that?
Is there a better way to do it?
>>
>>2070563
when you're standing straight, straddling the bike, feet flat on the ground, the frame shouldn't crowd your balls. as long as there's a couple, three fingers worth of gap you're good. from your pic, it looks like that frame is too big, dude. your saddle height makes it look ok, but not with you standing next to it. if your knees lock out or if you have to rock side-to-side a little to get leg extension (sometimes you don't notice) then that's too high. but if it's right that's confusing because the height looks ok-ish for a fitting frame with that classic geometry.
those handlebars look really reach-y. if they put you too far forward, modern bars are more compact. you could also get a stem with less reach. I got a cheap Uno brand bar off ali. also the bar is tilted weird but maybe that's to fix the reach.

>chain
it looks really clean and the gear teeth don't look worn, so that's good. it's not a bad idea to fully service an unknown chain by shaking it in a jar of degreaser over and over until it's clear, but you could probably just oil it. does it feel/sound crunchy when you have it in your hands?
simple green is good but water based , so after, you have to dry the chain out until the water evaporates internally. hours in hot sun, 20 min in toaster oven, etc, before you oil it and trap the excess SG in there. or you can douse it in WD40 which will Displace the Water, but the thin oil in it isn't thick enough for chain lube. after you put chain lube on, let it soak into the center and then aggressively wipe off the outside so it doesn't attract dirt. you only need lube on the internal parts that rub together.

good luck. there are fixes for frames that are small but too big makes it handle sluggish and emergency dismounts kill your nuts and without flat feet you can't bring it under control, especially when your nuts are on fire. maybe if you're on the bubble you can make it work but generally too big= sell and get a size down
>>
>>2070566
they've never given me any problems, personally. I feel like the stresses the axle & nuts/qr/ta are designed for are a lot more than just the weight of the bike hanging off them.
>>
>>2070571
oh, you're worried about carbon rim. again, it's probably designed for greater stressors but iunno anything about carbon rims
>>
>>2070572
The carbon part is less of an issue than the fact that it's a 40 year old wheel made back when carbon was an occult form of magic. Most of the stories you hear about carbon exploding out of nowhere is from products made in that time period
>>
>>2070572
they're designed for greater stressors but from specific directions, that's all I know about carbon. If it's not designed for stress from that direction it could damage it.
>>
>>2070563
Buy flat pedals instead of toe clips if you want to not have to worry about being on the wrong side of the pedal. No reason to ride with clips if you're not doing it for nostalgia
>>
What are the symptoms of having a stem that's too short? Asking for a friend.
>>
>>2070580
Adding to that, clips are cool if you're doing the whole l'eroica larp with period woolens and a leather helmet but if you want real foot retention (and there is nothing wrong with wanting real foot retention) get some M520s (the real kind not off brand) and some casual 2-bolt shoes (and practice somewhere that there isn't anyone around to laugh at you when you fall)

Clips and straps are objectively dangerous but some people just like the look, I guess
>>
>>2070578
good point
>>
>>2070577
I mean, why ride it at all, then?
but anyway, you've got it now, I get it.
I guess I might rig up some kind of pad. just big enough to cradle the hangers and stash it on my saddle rails or something.
>>
>>2070569
Every height chart online says that this is the size for me or recommend bigger bikes. My main issue is that my 30in inseam, I know people who are 5'7 with the same inseam. I can saddle straight with zero issue, but I have less then an inch of space. As of now I saddle the bike at a slight angle if I have to at stop lights and such to maximize my space. My torso is long and my arms are long so I don't feel like I am reaching. I used to ride with the seat higher, I lowered it to what you see in the pick. Seems ok, ill check to see if I am doing what you are talking about. I might just switch to flat pedals if you have.
Maybe I should sell the bike and go smaller, and I might do so in the future, but I really feel comfortable riding the bike but Ill put more time in to see. My issue is I live in a location where these type of bikes are rare and I don't want to spend crazy money.

>>2070617
The guy you're replying to is giving advice based on compact geo (S/M/L) sizes not traditional italian sizing, standover heuristic is kind of useless if you're on a frame that old
>>
how are people using 11-12 gear cassettes? even at 7 i mostly use the middle two plus the highest
>>
>>2070630
Do you ever use your front derailleur?
>>
>>2070630
Personally, Ride a lot of elevation, big ass front ring, 2x, anything on the bigger half of the cassette is for when ur legs stop working and it always feels pathetic
>>
>>2070630
it's called having hills
>>
>>2070621
compact geo gives you much more room, but claiming classic sizing doesn't require that you can straddle the top tube is the most idiotic statement on this board currently.
>>
>>2070583
I guess when turning feels too jerky.
>>
>>2070583
Twitchy front wheel wheel climbing. This bike is too big for me at nearly an XL sized frame so I put a short 30mm stem on it and noticed eight away that. The front wheel wasn't to walk left and right on climbs until I weight the front more.
>>
>>2070631
50/34T
i use the 34 mainly for just getting started from dead stop or inclines
>>
>>2070563
It has old and has funky geo. My steel gravel bike has a crazy long seat tube and a tall stand over for a modern size medium bike. When I put 45mm tires on it I had the top tube in my crotch when standing over it and i still wanted bigger tires so I went with 650b/27.5 wheels and 2.2 conti race kangz. You're going to have to just tolerate the xboxhueg stand over or get a different bike.
>>
>>2070617
>I can saddle straight with zero issue, but I have less then an inch of space
Ok, then you should be golden. the pic made it look like your crotch was much lower than the top tube but sounds like the frame does fit you.
>>2070652
also like anon says if you put some 650 size wheels on it will lower the height but that probably costs what you paid for the bike
