Bitter, smug failed bike shop owner lectures everyone on why his entitled customers were the real problem and why you really do need a new $3k carbon road bike instead of just a chain and cables for your old steel beater.
>>
>>2073159
yeah, i like bikefarmer but that story didn't quite sit well with me. not everyone has to be riding the most optimal setup. weird coming from him, he knows the benefit of bringing old beaters back to life more than anyone. seems like tribalism, he's too deep into the LBS camp that he'll defend any bike shop owner at this point.
>>
>>2073159
He literally said at 14:08:
>In my opinion, those '90s mountain bikes make the best commuter bikes ever made.
>>
>>2073172
He's 100% wrong
>>
>>2073173
(You) are 100% wrong
>>
>break one spoke
>lbs charges 500$ for a total wheel replacement
I can either buy an entire new bike for a fraction of that, or 36 new spokes for 12.99 and still get ripped off

>>2073172
i use an ebike to commute and it's built off of a 75$ marketplace find of a bike that probably cost 250$ new. its controller died and i bought a whole new bike in a pinch just to have a vehicle at all, still used, and the boomer that sold it to me not just said this but had paperwork proving that after buying the Dutch Bike (over 1500bux) and the motor kit (like 800bux) that our mutual LBS charged him 300$ just to install it. 300 bucks to literally change a wheel. I looked up the wheel kit later and it comes already laced.

bike "mechanics" are mostly retards who barely know righty-tighty lefty-loosy and vastly overcharge you for time and labor and take an infinity% markup on parts that you brought in yourself

>you as a consumer
STOP CALLING YOUR CLIENTS AND YOURSELVES CONSUMERS

Consumers are apiotic niggers interbreedable with CAGIES who have NO understanding of engineering not even ASSEMBLY trained parroting puppet assassins in maximum security insanity prison of proprietary parts trapped by the secret work of crapitalist gangster computer god earphone slavery; you are a TERRORIZED MEMBER OF THE MASTER RACE if you can TRUE your own WHEEL(rim), thread new cable into a """BRIFTER""" made up of sealed proprietary one-way fits, if you can even CHANGE A FLAT just IN YOUR YARD instead of taking it to the El Bee Ess for a several hundred job for five minutes of work and parts you already bought
>>
I literally got sexually assaulted at my LBS by the owner and I wasn't even that mad because I was already 17 at the time, but then I got really mad at them because they still had my fucking bike, I had left it there for a tune-up, but they gave it back to me with nothing changed. The brakes were still bad, the derailleur was still misaligned, the bike itself was still dirty, and the tires weren't even full of air. And I agreed to not report the owner to the police for grabbing my technically underage dick

I watched a few minutes of his rambling on 2x speed (because short attention span) and DESU I think he's kind of right about most of it. Pointless consoomer factionalism especially. Why are there 10 different kinds of mountain biking and 5 different kinds of "bike trail riding while carrying stuff" and why is each person in each little niche angry at all the others for liking the wrong bikes and being dumb and not knowing SHIT about bikes (not "cycling" because god forbid anyone think I'm one of THOSE people oh god someone might think I like cycling!!!)

The only thing I really take exception to is his claim that there's tech that has been on the market for 10 years that "no one" has ever seen, and further insinuating that this includes hydraulic disc brakes and tubeless. I guess it's hyperbole but it just detracts from the overall argument

I didn't run across any political stuff but I suppose since he doesn't support the wholesale destruction of the united states by sociopathic billionaires that means he's bad and dumb, lol. REAL bike shop owners take horse de-worming pills instead of SSRIs and smoke incandescent light bulbs on live TV to own the libs

IDK what to make of this guy, wish he wasn't so annoying because I appreciate/agree with most of his points. It's all moot because he's a salty son of a bitch and ironically admits his youtube bait titles are all for the money like that's supposed to make you actually agree with his stupid annoying attitude, which is actually how he feels but knows he's just being a cunt about it so has to pretent "it's all for the clicks"

It's embarrassing at the end of the day. Imagine if this goober was your dad.
>>
>>2073277

>erm, ackshually, you're just a fucking rube for getting sentimental about your old bike instead of consooming a new one
>>
he's just a terrible mechanic. all the rest of his videos are him struggling with basic tasks people often just do at home

i be he opened his shop and figured he'd retire a millionaire on taking 500$ a pop to replace blown tubes or put fallen chains back on and got mad after he realized sometimes people have more complex systems/problems or aren't so gormless that they'll pay 700$ to have a brake cable replaced
>>
>>2073159
he's so fucking retarded lmao
>>
>>2073395
Meh, your average LBS mechanic really is not that much better than doing it at home. They just get paid for it so they can't ragequit or blame the absence of proper tools/workspace.

His real mistake was that he made his hobby his job, we are all aware of the cliche, he had a midlife crisis and figured the rules do not apply to him.
>>
>>2073450
Went to my LBS for work one time and received my brand new Revelation fork back installed with a fresh 4 inch long scratch on the stanchion. Never went back for any work from then on, just to buy tools. I only went because I needed new cups pressed but do that myself now too.

I'd ask why the average LBS doesn't transition to being more of a garage and focusing on service if selling bikes just gets them BTFO by amazon, but if the average bike "mechanic" is like this guy...

Does the LBS have any real reason to exist? You can get bikes cheaper online. They can't fix the ones even they sell you. What's the fucking point?
>>
>>2073768
Car mechanics make bank because repairing cars is very complicated, the tools cost thousands of dollars, and the market is huge and in general has more money. Meanwhile 90% of bike maintenance jobs can be handled in ten minutes by any retard with <$100 of tools from amazon and a link to the Park Tool channel, and the other 10% are just as easy except the tools are more expensive. The people propping up bike shops with $200 "tuneups" or $25 tube installs are only doing it because they don't know how trivial and cheap it is to do it all themselves.
>>
>>2073785
Lol no mechanics are incredibly paid thanks to the bullshit book hour system, mix that with being drenched in carcinogenic oils and solvents all day every day and being a mechanic sucks big time. Life expectancy? Cancer before 50 and that's with decent genes. The cherry on top is the predatory tool system now modern cars require to service. Why are bike shop oldheads so scared of e-bikes

they're dead simple, you don't need that much extra floor space, you can just sell decent bikes with conversion kits, why do bike "mechanics" fear electricity so much??

Liability, insurance, return on labor hours, risk/reward. It's tempting to think 'this is easy, I can help my customer with their e-bike and get them back to riding again - the world is a better place and I'll have made $50/hour doing it!' But then you get you absolutely fucked over by a bike that requires 5 hours of disassembling all the wiring to remove the wheel so you charge the customer for a flat fix. Or the customer brings the bike in 'working' and then you try to do a tuneup and something goes wrong and the unique Chinese part is practically unattainable and then you're on the hook to by the customer a new bike. Or your insurance agent walks in and says 'you can continue to have property insurance, or you can service those firetrap bikes in your shop, but you can only have one' and so it's an obvious choice to turn away bikes from brands that you don't sell.

For an established bike shop that has a reliable stream of customers, taking on dubious E-bikes is a lot of risk for minimal reward. There are shops out there that take in 'XYZZAZZ' brand bikes, scooters and other E- trash, but they tend to be the scrappy underdogs starting out that are desperate for revenue.

An ebike isn't a "bicycle", it's a shitty moped with vestigal pedals created to exploit legal loopholes and is used almost exclusively by people who'd rather not own a bicycle at all but don't want to deal with the paperwork or pricetag of any of the superior forms of motorized transportation.

>a bike that requires 5 hours of disassembling all the wiring to remove the wheel
case in point of "bike" "mechanics" not understanding electricity or modern e-bikes

they have these things called "plugs" and "sockets" now, and even when they didnt, only the maddest of men (who are DIY chads who will never go to their LBS anyway) would do anything more permanent than ring/spade connectors on a terminal block

>Or the customer brings the bike in 'working' and then you try to do a tuneup
maybe dont snip random cables, i know most "mechanics" don't know how to remove a brake or shifter cable and simply re-terminate it in favor of cutting everything they can find, but just take it easy with the tin snips for once. otherwise you can't really "tune up" a motor controller or the motor itself beyond maybe taking a drivetrain apart and greasing it/replacing or cleaning up gears and an average seasonal tune-up of an e-bike is largely going over the same stuff as you would on a normal bike

>and something goes wrong and the unique Chinese part is practically unattainable
most of the stuff out there now is cross-compatible because in typical chink fashion it's the same two or three designs and the race is to produce it the cheapest possible because IP/patent law isn't real in moonland

>firetrap bike insurance
and yet the Tesla dealership up the street is insured, hmmmm

I'll leave you with that. You know, Trek -- they ask you interview questions. Well, the kind of question I face on the job is: is this niggerlicious? Is this too much voodoo for our purposes? If you're so smart why don't you own an LBS?

We’ve all lived the nightmare. A new tech shows up at the co-op, and you try to be welcoming, but he can’t seem to get up to speed; the questions he asks reveal basic ignorance; and his work, when it finally emerges, is so unracer that it ultimately must be rebuilt from scratch by more competent people. And yet his sponsors--and/or an actual recruiter, if your store has been infested by that bureaucratic parasite--swear that they only scout above-average/A-level/top-1% people.

It’s a big problem, especially now. There’s a boom on. I get harassing emails from recruiters every day. Everyone’s desperate to hire mechanics… but mechanics are not fungible. A great tech can easily be 50 times more productive than a mediocre one, while bad ones ultimately have negative productivity. Hiring one is a terrible mistake for any organization; for an LBS, it can be a catastrophic vibe-killer. So how can it happen so often?

Like many of the hangovers that haunt modern bicycle engineering, this is ultimately mostly Wal*Mart's fault. Back when they were the evil empire where everyone secretly wanted to work, they were famous for their Schwinn, Nakamura, and eventually Ozark Trail bikes (Why with Shimano groupsets?) and, of course, they asked new bike assemblers about mechanical engineering theory; "Tell me which force affects a cantilever the most..."

So what should a real interview consist of? Let me offer a humble proposal: don’t interview anyone who hasn’t accomplished anything. Ever. There is no excuse for bicycle mechanics who don’t have a tournament, event, or even one Critical Mass they can point to and say, “I won this, all by myself!” in a world where Strava and RidePal have free service tiers, and it costs all of $25 on AliExpress to buy everything you need to build a top-end racing bike.
>>
>>2075060
what kind of schizo rambling is this? you either know how to fix a bike and are up to date with latest standards or not, simple. Pray you get hired by a reputable store to train yourself if rusty on new standards and learn.
