Its the mom bike. She can't handle a higher saddle and I put on that massive padded "seat" for her. She had it lower but through improvement of her form it was raised to that height.
>>
>>2074279
Yeah. The joogle chatbot sums it up nicely. It it a tall straight hemp that was grown all over the Midwest that went feral when weed was banned despite it having a mutation that makes it have no THC. You literally can't get high off it and it is treated as a weed. I grew up using it to tie seedling pepper and tomato plants to sticks to keep them upright in my parent garden. You just peel it and it's natural string that burns and composts. I guess deer and turkeys and shit eat the seeds. There are always some advocates trying to get it unbanned but get lumped in with the potheads that try to use it to unban marijuana so it goes nowhere but there the plant is in every rural ditch growing throughout the midwest US as a weed.
>>
>>2074377
I always thought smaller frames lookes nicer than shit with stupid stack height
>>
>>2074475
That's pretty crazy. Why try to get it unbanned? Seems pointless? Especially as it's a ubiquitous as you said
>>
wait hemp is banned in the us? i thought it was well known it has no thc and no use in smoking it and WAS used for fiber production
>>
>>2074509
No, it got hit with the ban along side pot
>>
>>2074509
>Hemp is a legal crop in the United States. It was legal in the 18th and 19th centuries, then production was effectively banned in the mid-20th century, and it returned as a legal crop in the 21st century. By 2019, the United States had become the world's third largest producer of hemp, behind China and Canada.
>>
>>2074550
so why tf when I buy paper towels and printer paper and toilet paper, it's all from trees and there's no hemp options? I'm talking about at my neighborhood grocery.
>>
>>2074552
hemp is for making cloth. plant fiber paper is really tough and not really suitable for disposable stuff since it will clog your toilet and isn't very soft. you can find shit like "reusable shop towels" made of hemp, though bamboo ones are nicer and cotton/polyester is just cheaper

basically cotton and poly slop being so ubiquitous makes hemp goods rarer by just being drowned out of the market by cotton or synthetics

>>
>>2074842
Go away, casual. This thread isn't about motor vehicles and tents. You do not belong.
>>
>>2074842
I bought it at a camping store in Korea after a 35 mile bike trip I did there when I discovered that most of the camping sites there tend to run out of rented tents way faster than they run out of camping spots.
2-man pop-up tents like this one fold down to roughly the same size in their pouch as a 19-inch bike wheel. And the shipping pouch that came with it can easily be zip-tied over a rear wheel cargo rack for carrying the tent. But make sure the punch and grommet some holes into the bottom of the shipping pouch so it won't collect rain water.

https://www.amazon.com/EchoSmile-Camping-Instant-Resistant-Portable/dp/B0BMG71BMK/

Due to the shape of this style of tent the ones with an included rain over-cover don't fair any better at keeping rain from leaking in at either end. So if you want an all-weather tent the traditional ones with collapsible poles are a better choice and pack smaller anyway.

>>
>>2074893
It usually begins because someone accuses them of not riding, then they go on defense. Then the other person pretends that isn't what happened and calls it dick-waving. It's how /n/ has been for years. Every now and then though, we get someone who thinks they are genuinely mogging everyone else because they don't know any better. At least with e-bikers we all know they actually aren't riding or serious about riding at all.

Yeah I dont care how it gets done. Batteries have something like 900 times less energy density than petrol. The highest mileage vehicle is a micro turbo diesel.

As the ebikes go up in price with an increase in motor size, so as so many complain about here; so fat lazy morons use them to go 60 miles at 40mph, on sidewalks and then think they arent assholes. There is no 250 watt motor with a 1000 mile battery. I just want my peak output cloned with endless duration.

you can also just get the giganigga e-moto but not go at 60kmh on the sidewalk everywhere, much like big honkin turbodiesels get shockingly good mileage as fleet vehicles because the wagies driving them are always at 3000rpm instead of 8000 and actually do the speed limit by GPS enforcement

this but unironically. hub motors are objectively superior and the only reason to do mid drive is you want to hide that you got an ebike. embrace it anon. bathe in the seethe it generates to have that BIG BLVCK DISC powering your bike right at the wheel.

Or if you truly must do mid drive, do it moped style with a bigass conventional motor turning your non-drive side into a second drive side with its own independent drivetrain

that is in no way an MTB frame other than Trek writing down that it is in a piec eof marketing copy. that is a stock standard 90s/00s road bike design. it doesn't even have a suspension fork. the bars themselves are horrendous though

Real photo over 4mB. This one makes me mad kinda. I bought this bike on market place and one of the tyres was completely rotted away. The other was finished but still legible, so I bought two tyres of that type. I go to mount them, and boom, back wheel is a different dimension from the front. I went ballistic and chucked the whole thing on the scrap pile. Finally I calmed my ass and got the right tyre, and did the build. Changed all the cables and the cable housing, swapped the handlebar... AND... I love it. It's a sturdy, honest bike. Kinda mad because I got too many fucking bikes. Bottom bracket squeaks hard on the right leg downstroke. Just need to take it apart and grease. But yeah, kinda mad about this one. Guess I'll keep it as a winter bike?

>>
>>2075864
yeah, I kind of assumed it was just for the picture to show the drivetrain but you should shift to the small ring before you gear down the cassette to to the biggest cog. although I guess modern RDs and cassettes are all made to work with single cranks now? but without the chainline of a single crank you're cross-chaining the double more extremely. plus when you do want to downshift it's awkward on the derailleur from the extreme ends.
iunno I guess I'd have to ride that group to know for sure but traditionally that's considered bad form.

Postan this grabel shitter again. I messed with the stem angle and "aero bars" that I use to to change up hand position because I weigh a gorillion pounds and suffer from hand numbness as a limiting factor on non mountain bike rides. On mtbs on trails I get winded way before hand numbness sets in unlike grabel rides but those are high intensitylow duration rides. On this thing I could only ride for <10 miles before my hands stopped working. Its more time based than milage but I hoped the meme bars allow be to extend that time. Before the pads were too far in and the bars too narrow other than to one hand grip on a ride. I have moved the pads back and outwards as well as raising the bar angle to cope. Hopefully this gets me the alternate riding hand position I need to take weight off me hands on long boring grabel riding sections.
>>
>>2076467
I also ordered this bar with a bit of rise and aero grips built in. Going to give this one a try next.
>>
>>2076468
what is the actual purpose of those forward bar things? it's not significantly more aero to have a forward protrusion unless you're going supersonic If you have your hands on it, your arms and chest area are making a big pocket to catch wind, innit?

Guys, I just bought this bike but I think there's something wrong with it, the engine seems to be missing and the footpegs are all weird and spinny.

Ok, really, 2017 Salsa Timberjack, first acoustic bike I've owned since I was maybe 14 and I'm a few months away from 40. I live in an area with an absolute fuckton of MTB trails (Central Oregon) and it felt crazy not to take advantage. $735 from a local consignment and service shop that has a really good rep locally and has been through the bike, and it's in good mechanical shape with a quality aftermarket dropper and seat and it's been tubeless converted. How'd I do?
>>

>I would... temper your expectations about your physical performance
Oh believe me I'm well aware of how out of shape I am, getting the bike is part of trying to fix that. I've got a gravel road and some woods with mini-trails behind my house and just spent 45 minutes riding around there, and in some ways I did better than I thought I might but I definitely wouldn't go try to do anything serious. The last MTB I owned was full rigid and I don't think dropper posts had even been invented yet so riding with that stuff along with a relatively modern drivetrain is pretty cool, I got up some slopes I think might have given me a hard time when I was a kid who rode all the time.

The saddle is definitely a literal pain in the ass. It's a really nice one, a Brooks C17, and seems brand new, still has the fuzzy bits from the mold around the edges and I think it's noticeably more flexible than it was an hour ago. Maybe the previous owner tried it and didn't like it? Gonna try some padded shorts and see how it is, but the bike shop guy was also saying I could probably get $100 for it on FBM locally so worst case I'll do that and get something else. Grips seem like a good idea too, I love OD Green + Orange as a color combo so it'll give me an opportunity to get some OD on there anyway.

I'll check that book out.
>>
>>2076546
Oh, I just realized, the shop was wrong, it's a 2018 and not a '17, which apparently didn't come in this orange.

>The saddle is definitely a literal pain in the ass. It's a really nice one, a Brooks C17

the brooks C17 is what we in the hobby call an "ass hatchet". it is arguably the single worst saddle ever made but it sells well because brooks was highly regarded for a long time and it hasn't trickled in to normie channels that they probably should not have been. flip it if you can.

my favorite MTB saddle brands right now are giant, WTB, and fizik. in that order. saddles are personal but I prefer a very flat profile and I would bet that you will too.
>>
>>2076552
Good to know. I'm gonna try a cheap pair of padded shorts and see how it is but I'll probably offload it and see what I see locally that looks good, maybe at the shop where I got the bike, we're spoiled for choice in everything except affordable low-end bikes around here since MTB stuff is so huge.
>>
>>2076552
>brooks C17 is what we in the hobby call an "ass hatchet".
I see them as being pretty well regarded and I tried a c17 and didn't like how wide it was. Tried a c15 tester and enjoyed it, but the only reason I didn't buy it is it the tester had a squeak to it that was very annoying. Don't want a saddle that develops a squeak. Never heard anyone call them ass hatchets.

Is diabeetusanon the only real gravel rider in this thread?

Just finished cobling together another piece of shit. I posted this frame before as a drop bar but hated that so here is the new version.
Giant Option frame found in the trash that I sand blasted and let rust.
V-brakes taken off another bike I saw in the trash
Front wheel found in the trash
Rear wheel from my green Specialized Crossroads that had a big bend in it and can't be made fully true anymore
9 out of 10 speeds from a deore 4100 cassette 11-42 on a 7 speed freehub
Some ancient schwalbe big apples that still won't die.
Piece of shit essa 8 speed derailleur I bought on AliExpress for a different project that I have no abandoned
Suntour power ratchet shifter I got off a bike that was being thrown out
Diacomp lever also from the trash
Selcof titanium seatpost place holder although it would be hilarious to leave it on this.
Bontrage ti rail saddle I got for $10
Change out the seatpost and saddle and I could comfortably leave this downtown and not be too worried about it.
>>
>>
Oh yeah alivio crankset I took off a bike I built for an ex girlfriend with an AliExpress narrow wide chainring that I dipped in Easy-Off to give it a distressed look. I also tried making the derailleur looked scratches up by rubbing it against the cement to expose bare aluminum and that's how I found out it's made of plastic.
>>
Last time I tried to make an unassuming bike I went overboard and used too many new pieces. I think with the cassette and derailleur being the only modern component on here I got the look down pretty good. What make me laugh is this thing has a $90 bottom bracket I bought for a different project that didn't give the correct chainline but worked with the alivio cranks

it literally is though, any padding on the saddle will hurt your spine long term. Use your legs as suspension on bumpy terrain and your sit bones when riding on flats. Anon with the C17 here. I can see how minimal padding would be good but this thing is basically like sitting on bare plastic. It's a motherfucker even on level terrain. Like I said though I think it's new and needs to break in, it's just a piece of solid hard rubber so all the give is gonna be in the material itself softening up, so I'm gonna get some padded shorts to make that a little less shitty and see how it is after a few more hours of riding.

I personally found the tester I had very comfortable for offroading so I think you're right about needing to break it in. Only problem is it will develop a squeak.

the brooks memes are worst of both worlds, not stiff enough to support spine but also too thin to be comfortable. If you have to "break in" anything and potentially suffer from pinched groin or pain in the back to eventually get a "comfortable" saddle there is something mentally disturbing going on. Shit is plain obsolete, it was the best thing one could do back in like 1920s but for fuck sake just move on already so many modern saddles to choose from.

fwiw it's just sit bone pain that I'm dealing with. I did get some padded shorts and just took the bike for a ride, and it still hurt when I first got on it but I stopped noticing pain after about 10 minutes on the bike. Still not set on the Brooks but I need to get used to my fat ass on a bike seat in general before I make any decisions.

What I definitely think I do need is higher bars, I feel really hunched over and I've seen complaints about the same thing in reviews from when the bike was new so I don't think it's just me. I also really want to get some grips and pedals, probably gonna go plastic for now since I'm not gonna be doing hardcore shit any time soon and I'm already getting sick of scraping the back of my leg on the pins. Oh, and also a bottle cage and bottle to go in it so I don't have to wear a camelbak.

2 days in and the TJ already got its first upgrades. Used Cannondale 30mm riser bars that were already cut to the right size for me, used Chromag grips, used bottle cage ($3 lol) and a new set of RaceFace Rides, plus they threw the bottle in for free. Bars are fucking night and day, bike feels way more controllable on downhills and more comfy in general. The grips were blue so I got the pedals and bottle to match, not sure if I like it yet.

>all those bikes without fenders
I take it, you're all fair weather cyclists?

I have ass saver on the back and don't care about feet getting wet in front since it's inevitable anyway, fenders are gay

I intended to be but a thunderstorm came out of nowhere (weather forecasting in my area is abyssmal) and drenched the fuck out of me in like 2 minutes of insanely hard rain yesterday. Was my first time trying a real trail and I was only like 20 minutes in too, had to bail because riding this area when wet will wreck the trails.

>my favorite MTB saddle brands right now are giant, WTB, and fizik.
I just picked up a lightly used WTB at the consignment place. Seems like a big improvement, just did a test ride and it's still a little uncomfortable but less painful in regular pants than the Brooks was with padded shorts.

seems like if you want the position those bars afford, step one would have been to get a normal-reach stem.
also, if you're modding, you should go all the way and eliminate gripshit.
tires seem cool. bike should be a decent modding platform.
