it's the worst of both worlds, not a road bike, not a mountain bike even though manufacturers now add a RockShox Rudy to the bikes nowadays with negligible travel, but if you asked me to pick a bike that's generally on paved/semi-paved/gravely terrain with the occasional ride on forest paths where the ride may span hours (drop handlebars are great for this imo), I'd pick a gravel bike over the mtb, it's made for that precise purpose

theyre just "hybrids" for zoomers and just as awful. drop bars in low traction are stupid. offroading with no suspension is stupid. internal routing and "integrated"(proprietary, unmaintainable) cockpits are stupid even on normal roads. just get an entry level hardtail mtb

There's a park near me that got its roads washed out by a flood and so no vehicles are allowed, but needless to say I go anyway and my road bike does just fine. been using them since they were called cyclocross bikes

they are pretty great for commuting since they have a more relaxed geo
if you dont have dirt roads than endurance bikes/all road are fine, but they tend to be more niche

If you're an aggressive rider, CX geometry will be a lot more fun. Find the right frame and it's also an excellent commuter. If you prefer being marginally more comfortable at the cost of agility then go gravel. Throw some 32mm slicks on and you're golden.
