Can someone please explain this shit to me, an out of touch boomer who apparently isn't the right demographic to be brainwashed by my hand computer into committing suicide by I-beam? Why are today's no-good teens so eager to grind themselves into hamburger meat in front of hundreds of commuters? And apparently the thing to do is when your friend gets dismembered you run away and send a message to the group chat about this epic thing that happened, instead of calling an ambulance. It happens at least once a month. When I was a kid the naughty kids would play hookie to waste $4 worth of quarters on street fighter matches against much older kids, we didn't have these tick tocks rotting our brains. Is that what this world is coming to? Can't a kid just play a wholesome game of street fighter while smoking a cigarette and throwing up?
It’s called stupidity (which is not uncommon), just done in interesting new ways. Darwin claims another one, and nothing of value was lost.
>>2078223>Darwin claims another oneLOL!!!! Upvoted, good sir. Mind if I share this on Facebook?
>>2078216if you were actually an out of touch boomer you would know subway surfing was happening since the 1980s along with more graffiti culture/tagging
Kids gotta get their kicks somehow. You either die now having fun or you die in three years getting shot for Israel. I know which I'd choose.
>>2078230Heck, I'll bet as long as there have been "large, moving objects" there has been a puerile urge to ride them merely for the sake of the feeling of moving quickly. The difference was horses didn't have an interior cabin, so just riding them normally scratched that itch. But once we had large ships, we had people climbing the rigging or onto the bow to feel the wind blowing against their face and watch the water moving around you.
>>2078230If you were actually as old as you are pretending to be you'd know there are some fads that kinda existed in the margins 50 years ago but have completely exploded, like dudes turning themselves into chicks, just because there was some ex GI who turned herself into Marilyn Monroe in 1949 does not mean this was anywhere as common as it is now. You can't even open the news anymore without seeing a bunch of dismembered high school kids on the subway tracks, back in the day this was like a yearly occurance at most
>>2078245>1949 does not mean this was anywhere as common as it is now. You can't even open the news anymore without seeing a bunch of dismembered high school kids on the subway tracksthat's your algorithm and news sites reporting anything from around the world as long as it gets them ad money. It used to be different
>>2078284I agree that NYC is the only place that matters but I'm pretty sure my algorithm is not why I mostly see NYC news when I'm on NYC local news sites reading local NYC news
>>2078287well maybe then its just a thing with local teenagers because nyc people are retarded?
>>2078288So your local subway system doesn't have this issue?
>>2078289no
>>2078245https://www.nytimes.com/1996/07/15/nyregion/youth-is-killed-riding-on-roof-of-subway-car-in-the-bronx.html>The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said between 1989 and 2011, 13 people were killed and another 56 injured while skylarking or subway surfing.https://web.archive.org/web/20220506023024/https://www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news/daredevil-act-known-as-skylarking-gives-dangerous-meaning-to-riding-the-rails/https://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/17/nyregion/17surfing.html
>>2078298So 13 people over a 22 year period, an average of 0.59 deaths per year from 1989 to 2011In 3 year period 2023-2025, there were 16 deaths, an average of 5.33 deaths per yearI'm not very good at math being a stupid retarded nyc person but that seems like the kill rate went up by about 1000%?
>>2078216>hospitalizedDamnToo bad she didn't die.
>>2078679Ow that edge
Teenagers taking stupid risks is a timeless part of human nature and since we don’t have “take this spear and sacred amulet and go hunt the bear, son” rites of passage, the darn kids will find outlets for these primal urges. How common is subway surfing around the world? I’ve read about kids in Brazil riding on the tops of commuter trains and getting pulped, will do a bit of research.
https://www1.folha.uol.com.br/internacional/en/brazil/2024/11/rooftop-train-surfing-resurges-in-rio-raising-concerns.shtmlThere’s also a popular video game in Brazil called Subway Surfers
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Train_surfingA lot of this is “millions of Indians piled on a train” but there’s a section of recreational train surfing, with the most interesting part on post Soviet Russia.
