How retarded would it be to buy one of these as a first purchase? I will get a tailwheel cert before I do. The Champ has always been a favorite of mine.

This. Personal boats, personal planes, and trains are acceptable enough here on occasion.

Do you have a suitable airstrip at your house? If not, I hope you are an eight figures type of nigga.

I view light GA planes in a strange light. They are a bit underpowered to take more than 2 very far or very fast. But they also don't have the flying go-kart, 23 mph stall, open cockpit ultralight feel. I don't know. If I were to own a plane it would either be an ultralight or a 182 at the absolute minimum.

Picrel, had to stunk on these hoes with the spread at Oshkosh(we followed the magenta line the entire way)

No airstrip at home, but I live about five minutes of driving from one (the approach is over my house for one of the runways and aircraft routinely pass over about 700 ft). I don't need to fly anyone more than myself (5' 6" and 150lbs) and likely will not fly more than 100 miles from base (this being where another large airshow is held every April).

I might as well ask about 182s, they are really at the top end of my range for median valued 1970s models or a well kept square tail. Would it be better to spend $175-200k on one versus $35k or less on a Champ with comparable time?

What about middle of the road options like Stinson Voyagers, 170s/172s/175s, Cherokees or TB-9s/TB-10s?

Get the bush cub thing that can take off in like 50 feet.

I could do its predecessor (Sport Cub), but not the ones after it (Carbon Cub or XCub). Sport Cubs run $130k and up. Sport Cub can do it in 400', but most GA aircraft do not need a ton of runway. The one I posted needs about 650 ft.

Now this is under optimal operating conditions, so runs can be longer or shorter based on a variety of factors (wind, temperature, humidity, etc.). So even a 50' claim comes with a caveat.

I agree, champs etc. are deeply based but I think they are just victims of today's world. In my head they probably made a lot more logistical/financial sense back in their heyday, but having to spend 202x real airplane money to operate one seems very frivolous

I am thinking of buying a vintage fabric tailwheel as my first plane too, currently training exclusively in tailwheel planes like this, first a cub and nowna citabria. A couple things to consider though, first check AOPA for a local flying club that has one already. This is a much cheaper route than owning the plane by yourself as you split hangar and maintenance costs with other people. I will be going with this route for awhile before buying my own as there is a cheap club local to me with a piper cub. Secondly, if you are dead set on being an operator owner, make sure you secure a hangar spot before buying the plane. Fabric planes really need to be stored in a hangar. There is one guy at my local airfield who bought a fabric plane that has been sitting in a tiedown spot for lole 3 months now because he doesn't know anyone and couldn't find a hangar spot.
