HOUSTON — A man was shot and killed Tuesday morning by federal agents in Houston's East End, according to United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials.

They said the incident unfolded just before 7 a.m. near the intersection of Canal Street and Wayside Drive.

An ICE spokesperson said officers were trying to pull over a vehicle as part of a "targeted enforcement operation to arrest an illegal alien."

They said the driver of the vehicle they tried to pull over, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, tried to get away. ICE officials said Araujo is here illegally from Mexico.
Investigators said Araujo rammed into an ICE vehicle and refused to follow orders. They also said he tried to "weaponize" his vehicle and run over an officer.

Federal officials said the officer opened fire in self-defense during the incident, and Araujo was struck. He was taken to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

KHOU 11 News obtained surveillance video that shows part of the interaction. The video shows what appears to be ICE agents around a man on the ground next to a white truck. The video doesn't show what happened beforehand.

It's unclear if anyone else was injured.

People at the scene were visibly upset and crying while law enforcement vehicles blocked off the street where it happened.

The FBI is leading the investigation into the potential assault on a federal law enforcement officer, while the Department of Homeland Security is investigating the agent-involved shooting.

Houston Mayor John Whitmire declined to comment on the incident.

The League of United Latin American Citizens called for an investigation into the incident:
There have been 10 other shootings this year by immigration agents, according to The Trace, which is a nonprofit organization that tracks gun violence through news reports. Two of those shootings were fatal, both in January and both in Minneapolis. One involved Renee Good, who was shot while in a vehicle during a confrontation with an ICE agent. In the other, Alex Pretti was killed in a scuffle.

This year is on track to have more shootings than last year. The Trace tracked 15 last year, including four fatalities.
