Police cracked down on a protest called by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) in Delhi on Monday (July 20, 2026). The police action on one of the largest protests in the national capital in recent years left several people injured. The police swung into action amid an internet shutdown in the New Delhi district, even as CJP representatives Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka met with Union Minister J.P. Nadda to formally seek Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation.
Activist Sonam Wangchuk announced on Monday (July 20, 2026) that he would continue his indefinite hunger strike, saying the police action against protesters during the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) “ Sansad Chalo” march has prompted him to extend the fast until youth leaders are allowed to meet parliamentarians or he is permitted to do so from the hospital.

The "Chalo Sansad" march had travelled only a few metres before it was stopped. Yet, in another sense, it had travelled much farther.

A movement born out of satire had filled Jantar Mantar beyond capacity, spilled onto the streets of Lutyens' Delhi, brought Connaught Place to a standstill and tested the ability of its own organisers to contain the expectations of the crowd they had summoned.

By the end of the day, it had become clear that the movement had outgrown the lane from which it began.

What now remains are questions on the police’s actions, the violence that followed including the stone pelting.

As the moon settled in on the long day, the CJP organisers huddled back to reconstruct the very stage that was allegedly dismantled by security forces.

Protesters continued to reconvene at the site.
