https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/22/house-congressional-stock-trading.html?msockid=196670d327c565552f78675826d66426

The U.S. House advanced legislation on Wednesday that would stop members of Congress from buying individual stocks while in office, taking the first meaningful action on an issue that has dogged lawmakers for years.

The bill passed on a vote of 232-198, with more than a dozen Democrats joining Republicans in support.

There is broad public support for a ban on members of Congress trading while in office, as lawmakers’ well-timed trades and booming portfolios have raised insider trading concerns among ethics watchdogs and drawn intense public scrutiny going back decades.

But the GOP-led legislation advanced by the House, dubbed the Stop Insider Trading Act, falls well short of what the most vocal advocates of a congressional trading ban have called for. And many Democrats had lined up against the proposal.

“I’m very disappointed in it. It’s a stock trading ban that still allows stock trading. It’s a weak bill,” Rep. Seth Magaziner, D-R.I., part of a bipartisan coalition that has advocated for a more thorough ban, told CNBC.
>>
House Republicans also attached a voter-identification provision to the measure, eroding some Democratic support. Democratic leaders urged their caucus to vote against the bill.

President Donald Trump has been pressing Congress to approve the SAVE America Act, which would impose voter-ID and proof of citizenship requirements on voters across the U.S. The measure lacks support to clear Congress.

The stock trading bill with the voter-ID mandate included now advances to the Senate, where most bills require 60 votes to overcome a filibuster. Its fate in that chamber is unclear.

A 2012 federal law already makes it illegal for members of Congress to trade on inside information, but the penalties associated with that law are weak and rarely, if ever, enforced.

The legislation voted on Wednesday, introduced by Rep. Bryan Steil, R-Wis., would bar members of Congress from buying individual stocks while in office, but would not require them to divest their existing investments in individual company shares. It would also allow members to sell parts of their portfolio, provided they publicly disclose their intent to sell at least seven days before.

The bill would also increase penalties for members who fail to properly disclose sales of stock, assessing fines of $2,000 or 10% of the value of the transaction, whichever is greater. The current penalty for disclosure violations is $200 for first-time offenders.

“I think it’s really important that we tell the American people we’re done allowing members of Congress to be day-trading stocks,” Steil said in an appearance on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Wednesday ahead of the vote. “Let’s remove even the appearance of impropriety that any given trade is based on any inside information an individual may gain while serving in Washington.”

Get mad, faggot. If I need an ID to buy a gun then you need an ID to vote.

>>
>>1525074
Good comparison. A state ID is enough to buy a gun. It's not enough to vote under the shit Trump's pushing.
They want to make it easier to buy a gun than vote. That's fucking insane.
>>
>>1525074
Voter ID is fine. But only if everyone is auto registered to vote, the IDs are paid for by a tax on the rich, and mailed to everyone free of charge.
>>
>>1525064
A step in the right direction, but it's lobbying that's the real problem.

To be fair, a shitty voter, such an unapologetic liggeral scumbag, is more dangerous than any gun.

So MAGA.

Who do you think pays the taxes of the rich? The rich or their consumers?
What a faggot-brained piece of bullshit you are.
Punitive taxes are fucking retarded and the only tool Democrats recognize with the vast regulatory powers of the government.
Simpleminded doesn't even begin to describe my disdain for the liggeral midget-brained homosexual.

Not really.

Everyone in America since they should all be legal now. And the rich pay for it.
It's just that simple.

If you're so fucking poor that you can't afford the once-in-a-lifetime purchase of $12 dollars for an ID then you don't deserve to vote. And don't even start crying to me about muh rights when you faggots charge us for the right to own a gun in some states and call it legal. Especially when you have the ATF just changing rules on a fucking whim without congress approving it like they did with pistol braces.
>>
>>1525112
>If you're so fucking poor that you can't afford the once-in-a-lifetime purchase of $12 dollars for an ID then you don't deserve to vote.
The ID you're suggesting wouldn't let you vote. And also fuck you.
>>
>>1525114
>The ID you're suggesting wouldn't let you vote.
So how much do these REAL IDs cost then?

>And also fuck you.
No fuck you. You're perfectly fine with me paying hundreds of dollars to get a fucking ID card that says I'm allowed to own a shotgun or carry a pistol. So you too can take your fatass to the DMV, on your own personal time, and pay out of your pocket for a right.

Or you could just stop being anti-gun pieces of shit and drop all licensing requirements for firearms, and then I'll meet you halfway and drop the voter ID requirements... but then what would the democrat party stand for if not disarming non-criminals?
>>
>>1525117
REAL ID also wouldn't let you vote.

Okay. Fuck you.

Your blase passivity and defeatism piss me off, these people are scum and they're nakedly exploiting you. Don't just lay down and die for them, stupid fucking peasant.
>>1525105
NTA, but legal US citizens who have registered to vote.
Voter ID is retarded. There are already checks and balances that prevent people from voting fraudulently. You have to prove your identity when you register, and they will compare your name to the rolls. Voter fraud is not happening at any significant rate, and requiring IDs wouldn't increase detection or even prevent potential fraud, it would just mean the fraudster would need a fake ID.
If you dumb bastards want to require presenting an ID, then you need to make sure every registered voter gets an ID at no cost to themselves. Otherwise that's a poll tax, that's unconstitutional. If they did, I'd be fine with that, except for that would fuck up mail-in voting. Which is funny, because of the microscopic amount of attempted voter fraud, mail-ins are the majority of cases. So you'd ether deliberately disenfranchise voters, or spend a shit ton of money fixing the smallest part of a problem that essentially does not exist.
>>
>>1525119
Stalling? You're demonstrating that you don't fucking know what you're talking about. Gonna admit that?
The most accessible form of proof of citizenship for most citizens is a passport. The fees for that put together can be around $200, though that price and if you can get one at all varies from state to state.

>>1525121
>You have to prove your identity when you register, and they will compare your name to the rolls. Voter fraud is not happening at any significant rate, and requiring IDs wouldn't increase detection or even prevent potential fraud, it would just mean the fraudster would need a fake ID.
>If you dumb bastards want to require presenting an ID, then you need to make sure every registered voter gets an ID at no cost to themselves. Otherwise that's a poll tax, that's unconstitutional.
Also this.
The point of this is so less people vote. That's it. Because the more people vote the more Republicans lose and they know it, because this in particular would disenfranchise more Democrats than Republicans, and because they don't even want a democracy to begin with.
>>
>>1525122
>Stalling? You're demonstrating that you don't fucking know what you're talking about. Gonna admit that?
So you don't know what the cost will be. Thank you for admitting that.

>The most accessible form of proof of citizenship for most citizens is a passport.
lol which NOBODY uses to vote because that would be ridiculous. Trying to conflate this with a voter ID is retarded fearmongering at it's best. Funny enough some of the articles I'm looking at are showing around that price range, but they do so by adding in additional factors like the cost of gas to drive to the DMV, money lost from taking time off work etc. - factors that oddly don't apply when we're talking about the requirements to purchase a permit for a firearm. Funny how that works.

Odds are more likely you'll pay around the same cost as a non-driver's ID, which varies by state (God bless NY for being the most expensive, along with several other blue states. Yay socialism!). And you're not buying a birth certificate every single time, so don't even try to add that cost. There is NOBODY in this country that can't afford that. Even the poorest motherfucker in America can make that in one day. You have no excuse.
>>
>>1525128
>So you don't know what the cost will be. Thank you for admitting that.

>>

>Jesus fucking christ. Yes, retard, it would be
Okay prove it bitch. Show me a valid source that shows voter IDs... Just the IDs, not adding the cost of the fatburger you're missing out on because you had to make time for the DMV like an adult... costing around $200. Go ahead. I'll wait.

Do you want to engage any other part of the argument? No, you're just gonna repeat this shit and deflect?

Well I guess I'll let you bail out your little fucktoy since he's too cowardly to speak for himself after being called out. Besides I've got more important things to do.

>Do you want to engage any other part of the argument?
Such as? My whole thing from the very beginning of this thread was that if you can put a cost to exercise a right, the 2nd amendment, then you can require one to vote as well. Now you can cry and scream unconstitutional all you want, I'll give it as much consideration as democrats do every time they pass another feel-good gun law that accomplishes nothing.
>>
>>1525175
They were wrong. They acknowledge and accepted it. They are learning and growing from it.

Again, I know it's a foreign concept to a narcissistic faggot like you, but that is the path to self improvement, and it is brave, not cowardly.

>if you can put a cost to a right
I mean, firearms are tools for killing and need to be regulated and controlled, those aren't the same at all, but I'll accept your premise for the sake of argument.

You don't have to pay for second amendment rights dipshit. You have the rights outlined in our laws whether or not you have guns. You pay for the guns. If this is your "whole thing" then your argument just crumbled.

You aren't going to admit it though, because you're a coward, unlike fucktoy there. Probably why you're a right wing closet case too. I bet that's why you're so agitated, why you gave me such an easy win here, you're hoping I'll fuck you. Gross.

The arguments I was referring to were the fact that there are other checks in place, and this wouldn't address mail-in fraud, which is where the majority of fraud attempts happen, I said all of this earlier, but I don't even need those to beat a broken clock.
>>
>>1525177
>I mean, firearms are tools for killing and need to be regulated and controlled,
Except they don't work. This is why places like Chicago are warzones.

Now watch, you're going to pull up another gun violence by state chart that's going to have places like Montana at the very top because it includes suicide in their statistics. I'm calling it now.

>You don't have to pay for second amendment rights dipshit.
But that's wrong you fucking retard. Go to Illinois and buy a gun without a FOID card. Just a simple shotgun will do, nothing fancy.

>You aren't going to admit it though,
Because you're wrong.

>The arguments I was referring to were the fact that there are other checks in place,
Yeah I don't care about that argument. In fact, I'll go a step further and concede that maybe fraud isn't that big of a deal.

So what? That doesn't change my stance. If you can charge a fee for my rights I can charge a fee for yours. We'll just keep doing this tit for tat.
>>

There is no such thing as a "voter ID" and wouldn't be under SAVE. It demands proof of citizenship but doesn't give you any new ways to do that. Most Real IDs do not meet the standard it requires, so they're out. Passports meet the standard.
>>
>>1525074
Not the point, you fucking retard. Republicans who want to be able to keep insider trading, like your president and his cronies, are doing classic political swamp shit by attaching a completely unrelated partisan provision intended to make it less likely for the bill to pass.

If you want voter-id then pass a voter id bill you soulless golem. That said, >>1525097 is correct and you >>1525121 are hopelessly deluded if you think that you can vote for the royalty to hold themselves accountable. These people become congressmen specifically so that they can do shit like insider trading. It's one of the primary perks of the job and you're naïve to the point of stupidity if you think they're going to choose to reduce their paychecks.

It's about as likely as them deciding to hold one another accountable for receiving bribes. It's never going to happen; we're decades past the point of being able to vote ourselves back to having a functional government.

Cool. So in most states you don't need a license to own a gun. In my state you don't even need one to conceal carry.
Under FEDERAL LAW, not some shitty state, if two people are residents of the same state, neither is a firearms dealer, and the recipient isn't legally barred from owning a firearm, there is no background check or paperwork required. I can give my nephew a gun right now, and it's legally his.
So again you fucking retard, you do not pay for second amendment rights even though your fuck-ass state imposes state fees, you pay for the state fees and the gun, not the right baked into our constitution. You do not pay for rights period, and your dogshit argument is dead.
