First confirmed air-to-air kill, the majority of aircraft losses have been from ground-based air defenses. The infamous "Ghost" was never real (at best a combination of every Ukrainian pilot's contributions during the first few days) but ironically only Russia keep bringing it up as "proof of Ukrainian lies." It's one of those weird things where one side is clearly bantering (hence pictures of Sam Hyde as the "Ghost") but the other side assumes this is super genuine and then never shuts up about it YEARS after the first side is done with the joke.
However it's very much in character for this war: Ukraine does some minor thing that should only be an inconvenience for the "mighty" Russian bear (air force manages to stay alive in the first few days, TB2s and NLAWs get a few lucky hits on tanks, HIMARS and helicopter deep strikes on depots, sea drones harassing the navy), it somehow becomes more than a minor inconvenience (AF continues to operate late in to the war, those lucky hits turn into entire armored columns stalling, depot strikes end up crippling logistics, the flagship Moscow is lost to a nation with no navy), and then the Russians never shut up about how the Ukrainians are "liars and won't shut up about Ghost of Kiev/Wunderwaffe/etc" despite being the only ones to still bring up those events unprompted.

Haven't looked into but a funny explanation for the origin of the story that I've heard is that everyone expected Russia to decisively destroy the Ukrainian Airforce in the opening hours of the full scale invasion. depends on a lot of factors really.
Russia is clearly on a trajectory of decline, but unlike NAFO shills on twitter would like you to believe, it's probably gonna take a few more centuries until it could realistically cause an implosion of the country and all else being equal by then the Russian settler colonialism in the 5 occupied regions would have progressed a lot further.
So I think the question is, for how long Ukraine will be able to keep up their mid-range strike campaign that, at the moment, has basically cut off most supply lines to Crimea. If they are able to maintain and expand this, I'd be cautiously optimistic that liberation of at least parts of the country is possible.
The other question is what Russia will do with their mobilization in autumn. Will they just be thrown into the frontline as a stopgap, or will they actually build up a reserve? What's the equipment situation like?
Then there are more long term considerations like what effect Ukrainian long range strikes and crippling of the Russian economy will have or what western support will look like in the future, with Trump dismantling the US empire and many important EU countries trending more and more towards pro-Putin populist parties

Ukraine being able to produce much of its long range munitions themselves is a really good development because now they don't have to follow silly restrictions. Remember how in 2022 it was almost controversial that they flew two Hinds into Russia to attack a fuel depot, or how later Russia could build up troops just over the border to attack Kharkiv and Ukraine wasn't "allowed" to fire at those formations? Seems almost absurd now.
But money is on of their bottlenecks, I haven't checked since the latest EU financial support package but at least up until recently Ukraine still couldn't run its military industrial complex at full efficiency due to lack of funds, but if they manage to find more buyers for their stuff I imagine they can cross finance more production for domestic requirements.
Nontheless I think some dependence on outside funding will remain.

Then again on those kinds of scales I'm not sure it's even useful to make any predictions, especially considering we're currently in a bit of transitional period where the world is changing a lot.
And as I mentioned with those kinds of timescales the whole thing about Russian settlers becomes a bit tricky. Like how much time has to pass until it becomes ethically problematic or hard to justify to displace people (or threaten displacement or whatever else you might want to do). Obviously if Ukraine magically regained all of its territory today it's probably fair game to tell everyone who lives there integrate into Ukrainian society or leave. But if Finland magically regained Viipuri, for example, I'd say it's at the very least problematic to ethnically cleanse it of Russians (most of whom would consider themselves native to the city) just because it used to be part of Finland not too long ago.
It's a really messy situation and if anything I'm a bit frustrated that our western governments fumbled it all so badly. Looking at you Scholz and Biden, to name a few.
