This ensures that this specific person who has been killed can never again harm the community or the people in it. No, it doesn't end crime forever and its not meant to, there will always be crime, the best you can do is deprive criminals of their basic rights and execute them, which depletes the supply of criminal intent by one (1) person. Actually that's incorrect. Christians are explicitly instructed in the Bible to judge their fellow believers, but to NOT judge those outside the church.

Capital punishment is, and has long been, a contentious issue within Christianity. There are multiple examples of God condoning and ordering executions within the Old Testament. Jesus, however, has nothing recorded explicitly condoning capital punishment. The most common moderate interpretation of this is that God is therefore the only one with the authority to command capital punishment, which fits with what Jesus says in a story where people were about to execute an adulterous woman:

Only God/Jesus would be "without sin" and allowed to throw the stone.

The way that shakes out is that some Christians find it necessary for the state to kill people and some Christians contend that no human government should have that right. Both are scripturally-supported positions. This is why you have very deeply devout Christian groups who advocate for completely opposite positions on this topic, and it really comes down more to a political party alignment than anything else, as it can be leveraged as a wedge issue to great effect. People love justice and they love mercy, so either one can be used to win an election. Florida just happens to be run by people using the justice angle for now.
