LAKELAND, Fla. (WFLA)— A Winter Haven pastor was arrested after Polk County deputies said he had sex with a 14-year-old boy without disclosing that he was HIV positive.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said an investigation began after it received a NCMEC (National Center for Missing and Endangered Children) cyber tip regarding inappropriate contact 42-year-old Timothy Chaneyfield was having with a child.

“We don’t want this evil man ever to be outside of prison again, because if he is I can assure you that pedophiles don’t change their personality or their wants or their needs,” Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said.

Detectives said that a 14-year-old boy told them he met Chaneyfield on a dating mobile app and then continued to chat via Instagram, which is where the tip was generated.

According to investigators, Chaneyfield picked up the teen on three consecutive days at the entrance to his subdivision and drove him to his house in Winter Haven, where they had sex each day.

Chaneyfield allegedly told the boy on the phone that he wanted to continue having sex with him, but he was going to fly to Baltimore for work.

Detectives said they learned that Chaneyfield was a chaplain for Compassionate Care Hospice and was going to preside over a funeral in Baltimore.

A warrant was obtained for his arrest, and he was taken into custody when he returned to the Orlando airport on July 29.

During an interview with detectives, he admitted to having sexual activity with the teen.

He was transferred to the Polk County Jail on Saturday.

During a separate investigation, a man reported to Polk deputies that he had sex with Chaneyfield and later learned that Chaneyfield was HIV positive.

Detectives said they confirmed that Chaneyfield is HIV positive and is taking medication for the disease. They said he did not inform the man or the teen about his HIV status.

Chaneyfield is also a pastor at St. James United American Free Will Baptist Church in Winter Haven.

According to the PCSO, Chaneyfield was charged with:

Three counts of lewd battery of a minor
Three counts of interfering with custody of a minor
Unlawful use of a two-way communication device
Three counts of traveling to meet a minor
Four counts of an HIV infected person having sex without informing their partner
Possession of cannabis
Five counts of possession of drug paraphernalia

“This is a dope smoking preacher right here. He’s a dope smoking pedophile preacher. Right before you,” Sheriff Grady Judd said.

The sheriff’s office said anyone who has information regarding Chaneyfield having inappropriate contact with other minors, or other adult victims without disclosing his HIV status, is asked to call the Polk County Sheriff’s Office at 863-298-6200.

Winter Haven residents say they were shocked and horrified to learn about the charges Chaneyfield is facing.

“I hope that all of [the victims] come forward because this is wrong,” Teresa Story, a Winter Haven resident told 8 On Your Side. “The Lord is going to judge him at the end of the day, but the law’s got to judge him too.”

Willie Storey, who’d been at the church where Chaneyfield was the pastor in the past told NewsChannel8, “We just got to continue to pray and ask God to cover our children and move this man that came to be a father of God out of the church.”
