“We walked down the street with officers and found other cameras on the street to help locate the suspect, and they did,” Godwin said.

He also says he has been in contact with the victim’s family.

“I’ve spoken with the family and she seems to be recovering, but it’s a very tough situation for the family as well,” he said.

Residents say the incident has changed the way some people think about safety in a neighborhood often viewed as walkable and welcoming.

“You have a certain amount of comfort on your home ground,” said Bailey Caudle, who frequently visits the area. “The fact that it is daytime and it’s busy in the streets, you think that is a certain level of security in itself but for that to be so random…”

Resident Erik Thomson said he feels for those who are more vulnerable.

“I really just hate thinking that she just walked down the street by herself,” Thomson said. “It’s terrible. It makes me feel unsafe for women walking alone, children.”

Court records show Hunt has previous convictions dating back more than a decade, including assault-related charges, breaking and entering, and weapons offenses.

Records also show several prior charges involving assault on a female and domestic violence protective order violations that were later dismissed.

The criminal history has led some community members to ask why Hunt was not still incarcerated.

Attorney Thomas Clark, who is not involved in the case, says the answer is complicated and depends on the details of each individual case.

He says North Carolina courts must follow sentencing laws that exist at the time someone is convicted.

“Once you’ve done that sentence, you’ve served your debt. You’ve paid your debt with society, and you move on to the next thing,” Clark said.

Clark says prosecutors, judges and defense attorneys cannot keep someone incarcerated based on what they might do in the future.

“We’re not able to see what’s going to happen in the future, and we can’t punish people for things that they have not done yet,” he said.

Clark says plea agreements are also part of how the court system manages thousands of cases.

He explained that prosecutors must weigh factors including evidence, witness cooperation and available resources when deciding how to resolve cases.

“The players within the court system, within the criminal justice system, are working within the bounds of the law that they have,” Clark said.

He added that questions about whether those laws should change including how the system addresses mental health or substance abuse concerns are separate conversations for lawmakers and communities.

The arrest has also started conversations in Dilworth about what could prevent similar attacks.

Thomson says the incident strengthens his support for more public surveillance cameras.

“I know that is a point of contention right now, but when I see something like this, it kind of justifies it,” he said.

Caudle says expanding access to mental health resources could also be part of the conversation.

“If we had more mental health care available in an accessible way, it would not prevent all sorts of violence like this, but I think it could prevent some before it got to that level,” she said.

CMPD says the investigation remains active and anyone who believes they may have been victimized by Hunt is encouraged to contact detectives.
