https://www.politico.com/news/2026/09/03/diesel-prices-hit-all-time-high-as-trump-administration-brandishes-energy-policies-01063862

U.S. diesel fuel prices hit a record high Thursday afternoon, according to a fuel price monitoring service, surpassing the previous peak set in 2022 as surging crude oil and refining bottlenecks sent the cost of the fuel that underpins a wide swathe of the U.S. economy soaring.

Diesel prices have risen nearly 60 percent in the past 12 months as the U.S. war against Iran has scrambled oil shipments from the Middle East and Russia’s output of the fuel has dwindled because of its war against Ukraine. The new record is likely to spread through the economy and feed inflation that could damage Republican prospects of keeping control of Congress in November’s midterm elections.

Diesel now costs an average of $5.82 a gallon, according to the pricing service GasBuddy, breaking the previous record high of $5.81 set under former President Joe Biden in June 2022 when fuel costs skyrocketed amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the post-Covid global economy.

Vice President JD Vance told reporters at the White House on Thursday that gas prices are high because the Iranian regime is targeting oil tankers moving through the Strait of Hormuz. He also claimed that gas prices “could have been much much higher were it not for our efforts” and downplayed the notion that the world is currently experiencing an energy crisis.

“I can’t repeat this enough, but for the leadership of President Trump and the hard work of our troops, we would have had an energy crisis because the Iranians refused to stop acting like terrorists in the Strait of Hormuz,” Vance said.
>>
The White House said that Trump, who promised to cut energy prices in half, is taking steps that will soon bring prices down.

“This week the President met with nearly a dozen refiners to discuss ways to expand our refining capacity, which will lower prices at the pump,” White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers said. “As the U.S. military fully degrades the terrorist Iranian regime’s ability to attack shipping vessels, oil and gas prices will fall back to pre-conflict levels.”

For now, there’s no sign that diesel prices will fall anytime soon, experts said.

The effects of the price at the pump with the green handle go far further than the filling station. Freight and farms run on diesel, so high diesel prices seep into the price of food and anything else delivered by a big rig.

“Diesel sort of runs the U.S. economy,” said Dean Croke, principal analyst at DAT Freight & Analytics, “and I think that’s the bigger problem.”

Cost of living concerns are expected to decide which party controls the Senate and House. And diesel is considering the backbone of the economy, driving up the cost of groceries, manufactured goods, inflation and more.

That’s where voters are “feeling a crunch” right now, said Doug Heye, former spokesperson for the Republican National Committee and a longtime GOP strategist.

“Any time they have to spend on anything, they’re upset with what it costs,” he said. “A threshold like this is just another sign of how expensive it’s become just to get by.”

The spike in diesel prices also comes as drivers face record-setting gasoline prices heading into Labor Day weekend, which are some of the country’s biggest travel days of the year.

The cost of a regular gallon of gasoline is at a record high $4.14 for this time of year, according to AAA. That’s well above the previous Labor Day record of $3.82, set on Sept. 3, 2012.
>>
And the national average price in August was above $4 per gallon every day of the month, making it the most expensive August ever for gasoline.

A POLITICO Poll conducted in August found that 61 percent of individuals surveyed believe the Iran war has made things more expensive for their families, up 4 percent from a month earlier.

But oil and the Strait of Hormuz are not the only problem. Persian Gulf refineries have been hit in the exchanges of missile fire. And Ukrainian drone attacks have taken refineries offline in Russia.

Russia, which last year accounted for more than 10 percent of the world’s diesel exports, is now importing diesel and gasoline, and has largely banned exports.

In the United States, refineries are setting records for output. U.S. refineries operated at 98 percent of their operable capacity last week. Some have delayed maintenance, increasing the chances of outages that could drive up prices further.

A bigger disruption, with a bigger effect on price, could occur if a large hurricane threatens the U.S. Gulf Coast, where the bulk of U.S. refining capacity is located.

In non-shill talk, the price increases are 100% the fault of the Trump administration and could have been effortlessly avoided by not ripping up Obama's perfect peace accords and starting a war because Israel has proof Donald Trump fucked children.

Diesel prices at all time high
Strategic petroleum reserve at all time low
Truly, the Golden Age of America has begun
>>
Fake news, fuel prices are down. President Trump himself mentions seeing fuel going for less than 2 bucks in Ohio. Those are 90s era prices and only President Trump could have done that. We also already beat Iran thoroughly and undisputedly. It's not in dispute by any serious observer. We destroyed their navy, air force, bridges, factories, stockpiles and leadership. We won.
>>
>>1533815
>we would have had an energy crisis because the Iranians refused to stop acting like terrorists in the Strait of Hormuz
Hey Vance, buddy, when did they start bombing everyone coming through the Strait again? Because it's weird they haven't really done that until very recently, for some strange reason...
>>
>>1533818
>we
LOL
>>
>>1533818
The price of diesel has been elevated since at least 2022 with no breaks in between.
>>
>>1533807
At this point we're past the point of propaganda and into outright denial. These kind of statements from him and Chris Wright just aren't gonna cut it; this isn't a propaganda thing you can flout, this is a physical resource you're lying about having. You can claim we've restored normal flow of oil all you want but people are gonna notice the price is still up, and his only response isn't even some kind of explanation and instead just denying the price is up at all. Trump is living in a different fucking reality and he's forcing everyone in his admin to report news from there instead of our own. This isn't sustainable because I'm starting to fear that in his old age he genuinely believes this shit.

And before anyone brings it up; no, the Venezuela oil deal isn't going to help with this. We need literally years of infrastructure and processing to turn that crude oil into what we actually use and oil companies just plain aren't interested in Venezuela due to both poor quality and the fact last time they tried all their shit got nationalized and left to rot.
>>
>>1533818
Oh and I forgot to mention that owning the libs like (You) is good policy because they're usually happy when things go wrong.
Stay classy turbo faggot.

are you implying trump is the libs? he seems pretty happy about fucking everything up and losing a war

Only to turn right back around and end up back here again
>>
>>1533841
But anon how are we supposed to stop the nuclear weapons program we supposedly set back decades last year yet somehow recovered so fast they were two weeks away from a nuke (again) when this war started?

Not that we failed in that bombing last year. No that totally went super well and was a massive success. They just were still able to do the thing we bombed them to stop them from being able to do, but that doesn't mean we... man I can't even keep this up, that entire press conference from Hegseth was that fucking retarded.
>>
>>1533818
Exactly and even if fuel prices are high this is good for stock prices and therefore the American people
>>
1533818
>We destroyed their navy, air force, bridges, factories, stockpiles and leadership

1533852
>Briben
>Obongo
So it's not Biden and Obama who are responsible for what's happened, but two fictional people invented by the esl shill as a way to put the blame on others for Trump's long term effects since early 2025.
>>
>>1533856
>specific
>>
>>1533858
You can't be specific when it comes to a wide sweeping range of regulations, handicaps and limitations placed on the oil industry. This has been an attack on American energy that's lasted for decades. California had higher gas prices than today during the Obongo regime, you can't blame that on President Trump, it's clearly the fault of liggeral (((policy)))

>>1533852
>>1533856
Who started a war with Iran that led to one of the most important oil shipping lanes in the world being closed? This isn't some "X's policies led to Y" where you can debate context all day and night; gas prices are up because there is physically less oil being transported across the planet right now. The reason for this is that Trump bombed Iran and they closed the Strait in response.

That's objective reality, no way around it. Even Trump's delusional claims revolve more around him imagining we've miraculously opened the strait than the idea that the prices aren't a direct result of that.

Nope.

That was $300B from the Gulf States IF Iran met certain future requirements. Vance and Rubio have spoken on this.
>>
>>1533955
>MOU said that IF Iran was a good boy, the US would unfreeze certain assets. Iran has not been a good boy, and those assets remain frozen.
No, we unfroze 24 billion to GET the MOU with promises that we'd unfreeze more after we came to a conclusion. This wasn't part of what we would give them if the war ended, it was what we gave them to convince them to abide by the ceasefire and come to negotiations.
>>
>>1533964
>we unfroze 24 billion to GET the MOU with promises that we'd unfreeze more after we came to a conclusion
Simply not true.

Qatar has confirmed that the $6B in frozen assets remains in their possession.

Obama probably.
>You walked right into that one, dumbass.
>>
>>1533970
There's reports they did release the money and are denying it now because after the MOU fell apart it would've done it for nothing. Hence why a few weeks after they denied any assets were released, their central bank "conveniently" started a mass review looking for money being given to Iran.
>>
>>1533983
Again, Qatar has said no money was transferred and the transfer of money was predicted on a final ceasefire, which was never reached.
>>
>>1533978
>The new fund is a private investment vehicle, not a reconstruction or reparations programme and will not include any government money or grants, the source said, adding that companies based in the U.S., the Gulf Arab states, Asia, South America and Africa have agreed to commit financing.
>Investments pledged span energy, logistics, manufacturing and transport, the source said.
U.S. President Donald Trump pushed back on Wednesday against any characterisation of the fund as a U.S. investment. "We're not investing, we're not putting up 10 cents," he said, adding that he was not asking Gulf countries to invest either.
Probably the next paragraph of the news article.
>>
>>1533972
>The US Taxpayer isn't putting up 10 cents
Except for the 100 billion plus that's been expended on this stupid war so far, not to mention the tens if not hundreds of billions of dollars in damage that's been done to US military infrastructure in the Gulf region
>>
>>1533987
So when we spend money on a bomb from Raytheon, we are giving that money to Iran, and when we spend money on the salaries of US Servicemen deployed in the Strait of Hormuz we are giving that money to Iran, so actually we gave them 100 billion dollars?

I wonder how much we gave the Ayatollah with that bomb we dropped on his head, probably at least a million dollars
>>
>Hey schizo

Nice projection, meds-needing schizo 1533979.
>>
>>1533988

Under JCPOA Iran gets nukes after 2030. Hence we tore it up.
>>
>>1533997
>Under JCPOA Iran gets nukes after 2030. Hence we tore it up.
Yes because it makes perfect sense that if the deal was going to make it so they could theoretically develop a bomb years later, we instead tear it up so they can develop one now.

Oh but don't worry, we'll put a stop to that by... going to war and then promptly giving them leverage to just straight demand the right to nuclear enrichment.

Fantastic plan everyone.
>>
>>1533997
Maybe if Trump hadn't torn up the agreement out of spite despite the fact that his own administration has never been able to present proof they were in violation of the terms, it would have worked and been renewed at the end of the timeline
But we'll never know. Instead we got 18 dead and 700 injured servicemen (so far), a 100+ billion dollar war tab (so far), and all time high diesel prices

Also this. You never see perpetual agreements because no one wants to be held to a contract unto eternity.

>>1534002
>Violation of its terms doesn't matter.
Cool. That means any agreement made with the United States isn't worth the paper it's printed on and no nation has any incentive to ever make an agreement with us.
Which in turn means the only way the United States can resolve any conflict is bombing the other party into submission.
Given we're six months in and we haven't been able to bomb a second world mediocre regional power into submission, after spending hundreds of billions of dollars, depleting our munitions stocks and strategic petroleum reserve, and spiking diesel to the most expensive it's ever been, do you feel that's a sustainable model for international relations?

2030 is in four years.

>Given we're six months in and we haven't been able to bomb a second world mediocre regional power into submission
We've inflicted generational damage on them. Their navy and army and air force and military industry and nuke program are all gone. The Gulf States are building pipelines so we can avoid the strait. Tick tock, faggots.

>>

The rough estimate (not using the US' complete bullshit "we're actually getting more oil through than before the war" claims) is about 3-4 million barrels per day. Compared to the average of over 20 million from before? 30% isn't even close, and that's not even accounting for the days when Iran bombs another tanker and scares everyone off.

>Let me break it down for you, retard. Iran closes the straight and America can't do anything about it because nook.
As opposed to right now, where the strait is still closed and we can't do anything about it anyways.

"operating freely" meanwhile literally last week they successfully bombed a ship we were supposed to be escorting. It bled a trail of oil anon. This is not "free operation", it's trying to sneak oil past and hoping they don't get spotted and bombed.

>There are three pipelines that bypass the strait. You're all fired up about this shit but haven't done the basic reading. Typical.
Then why the fuck are gas prices still spiked to shit? The same amount of oil goes through those pipelines that did before the war. Existing pipelines are meaningless because they aren't contributing to replacing what goes through the strait.

Really 182 people died and 150 people were injured because of Joe Biden's disastrous withdrawal policy. If you want to know the hostility of the Taliban, it was targeted against the Afghan National Security Forces, which were backed by the United States.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_Taliban_offensive
The Taliban began their offensive against US backed forces on May 1st 2021, coinciding with the withdrawal of the United States's 2,500 troops in Afghanistan, and those belonging to other international allies.

No, dipshits, the same lab that makes commerical grade uranium can produce weapons grade uranium. The Obama deal required them to use those labs to reduce the potentcy of the uranium they had to a certain level. Once the deal expired they could use those labs to spin them back up to weapons grade.

Doesn't matter anymore, because we bombed the fuck out those labs and killed everyone who knows how to enrich uranium.
>>
>>1534127
>Once the deal expired they could use those labs to spin them back up to weapons grade.
So the better alternative was to tear up the deal, let them spin back up to weapons grade for years, bomb the labs and declare their nuclear program has been obliterated and will take years to recover, then come back eight months later and start a war that disrupts the global energy market for six months because they were just days from having a bomb?

So instead of them having to wait until 2030 to do that, Trump tore up the deal, allowing them to do that immediately and forcing constant direct US intervention via bombings to keep their nuclear program in check? By your logic Trump is even more retarded.

>You're so obsessed with sucking his cock you can't recognize one of the worst US foreign policy and conflict blunders in its entire history

>We had to tear up the deal so they couldn't purchase weapons for a war which happened as a direct result of tearing up the deal
>Weapons which they are still purchasing
>But if we didn't tear up the deal, they would have been able to purchase more weapons for the war that happened because we tore up the deal
Fascinating

>very little cost
