'Waste of our time' | Trump administration officials respond to KARE 11 investigation into prison sale

Members of the Trump administration, visiting St. Cloud to discuss fraud on Friday, dismissed a question about federal overpayment for a Minnesota private prison.
ST. CLOUD, Minn. — U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent dismissed a question about a recent KARE 11 investigation into the federal government's overpayment for a private prison in Appleton, Minnesota, in the administration's first public response to the report.

KARE 11's reporting showed the Department of Homeland Security paid $495 million to purchase CoreCivic's abandoned private prison to use as an ICE facility, when that same facility was offered to the state one year earlier for $75 million.

The price difference for the prison sale, $420 million, is more than taxpayers are estimated to have lost in Minnesota’s much-publicized Feeding Our Future fraud scandal.

Bessent was joined by other members of the Trump administration at a press event in St. Cloud Friday to discuss the administration's "War on Fraud."

When the event opened to reporter questions, KARE 11's Lou Raguse asked Bessent, "If the administration has declared war on waste and fraud, could you explain the $420 million overpayment for a prison in Appleton, Minnesota, when the company offered it to the state of Minnesota for $75 million?"

"I don't know anything about that," Bessent responded. "What we are here to do is to prosecute criminal fraud, and any question like that, that deflects away from it, I think is a waste of our time, thanks."
>>
KARE 11 attempted to contact Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin for comment prior to the report's publication, but the DHS secretary and his agency did not respond.

The KARE 11 investigation found the Appleton prison sale was one of several sales that CoreCivic made to the federal government this year, and that CoreCivic previously donated $500,000 to the Trump-Vance inaugural committee.

In a written statement regarding the prison sale, CoreCivic told KARE 11, “independent appraisers used a cost-based methodology” and in bold print, “The federal government ultimately determined the sale price following its assessment process.”

On Friday, Democratic Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison called on Congress to conduct an investigation into the prison sale.
>>
For reference, $420,000,000 is more than all of the fraud that the Trump admin has uncovered in the Minnesota Somalian community combined
>>
Should have known as soon as he started locking in on fraud in Minnesota that he was committing fraud in Minnesota
It's always projection with Trump, no exceptions
Shame on me for not immediately assuming as much in this case

Private prisons? You can thank Reagan and Clinton for that.

Asset forfeiture? Reagan and Clinton.

Do you have a source who isn't a pathological liar, pedophile and fraudster?

When a democrat is in office, you can trust white house press briefings as fact. If a republican is in office it's all pathological pedophile lies.
If you didn't have double standards you would have no standards at all.

Biden didn't develop stage 4 cancer in the 4 months between when he left office and when he announced his cancer diagnosis in May of 2021. karine jean-pierre was lying about bidens health, including covering it up when Biden accidentally said he had cancer.

>Joe Biden has cancer, that makes it okay for Trump to funnel 420,000,000 in taxpayer dollars to his buddies in the private prison industry
Fascinating

Does this mean Trump owes KARE 11 a million dollars for uncovering this fraud?

Yeah sure. And I'm sure this number is real and totally not also adding in the fully prosecuted fraud cases from 2022 that got the ringleader of the whole thing.

Yes, because they're liars and hypocrites, as demonstrated by this report.

when a democrat is in office you can trust yes men and only softball questions.
also funny how you talk about cancer when democrats just got an MIT cancer researcher canned for fake #metoo shit and its taken 5 years to clear it up. we could've had a cure for cancer and you fucked it up

Yes, but justice was served since big pharma is safe <3

Trump is surrounded by yes men who flub softball questions.
Trump has cut funding for cancer research.
Trump is accusing Minnesotans of fraud while he is very, very obviously committing fraud in Minnesota.

>also funny how you talk about cancer when democrats just got an MIT cancer researcher canned for fake #metoo shit and its taken 5 years to clear it up. we could've had a cure for cancer and you fucked it up
Please explain how one guy having a career derailment stopped us from having a cure for cancer, yet Trump cutting the cancer research budget almost in half didn't.
>>
>>1546028
your politics led to a leading scientist being terminated for fake metoo allegations. Gotta love your hypocrisy downplaying that. You should just be killed for aiding cancer.
I hope you get cancer
>>
>>1546029
Curious: who exactly are you going on about?
>>
>>1546029
>>1546030
Looked it up: David Sabatini.

Funnily enough, what got him fired from MIT wasn't actually the false allegations. It's because he admitted he was in a consensual relationship with the person making the allegations, which violated MIT's policy on sexual relationships with individuals who faculty could influence the careers of.
>>
>A guy got fired five years ago
>That makes it okay for Trump to funnel four hundred and twenty million dollars of taxpayer money to his buddies in the private prison industry
Fascinating
>>
>>1546029
Sabatini was studying a specific cellular pathway involved in cancer research, not working on a cure for cancer. His resignation didn't bring cancer research to a halt.
He also wasn't simply fired over an accusation. He resigned from the Whitehead Institute after an investigation found he violated workplace policies by having a sexual relationship with a subordinate and creating an inappropriate lab environment. The later defamation verdict is a separate issue.
Meanwhile, Trump's proposed FY2026 budget would have slashed NIH funding by 40.6%, from roughly $47 billion to $27.9 billion, including a 37.3% cut to the National Cancer Institute. That's billions in potential cuts to medical research across the country. Congress fortunately rejected them.
One scientist losing his job is unfortunate. Trying to blame Democrats for that while defending an administration that wanted to slash cancer research funding on a massive scale is pretty fucking rich. Maybe wipe the shit from under your nose before you start claiming other people stink

protecting lives by imprisoning domestic terrorism.

>>

Biden bypassed Congress by promising something' that required the power of the purse to authorize, so his over reach was struck down by the Supreme court.
That same supreme court could block Trump from sending checks if he tries to do so as an executive order instead of getting the Republicans in the House to put the money forward

>>
>>1546119
Neither does Trump apparently
https://www.reuters.com/legal/government/trump-seeks-withhold-800-million-congress-approved-funds-2026-09-26/
>>
>>1546134
That's literally the exact opposite example.
That's not Trump spending 800 million dollars and bypassing congress, that's Trump not authorizing spending that was approved by congress. A presidential veto is the constitutional power of a president to reject a bill passed by the legislature, preventing it from becoming law. It's a constitutional power that Trump can kill a bill and prevent Congress from spending money. There is no constitutional power for Trump to just spend 800 million and bypass Congress.

To apply it to the Biden case. President Biden could veto a Congressional bill forgiving student loans, but he couldn't unilaterally pass a bill forgiving student loans.
>>
>>1546135
This isn't vetoing a bill
This is Congress passing a budget, Trump signing that budget, and then saying "Nevermind I changed my mind I don't like that part of the bill"
Are you of the impression that the president has the authority to simply ignore laws that he signs if he doesn't like them?
We know that's the stance of the Trump administration, given Congress passed a law with a veto proof majority and signed by Trump himself compelling the DOJ to release all files related to Epstein, and the Trump administration turned around and said "No we're not doing that, fuck the law."
But I'm wondering what your personal stance is on that.
>>
>>1546136

1. Clinton utilized the line item veto before SCOTUS ruled it unconstitutional and stopped after the ruling, so if Trump were to do the same now it would not be okay.
2. A line item veto isn't the same as just unilaterally deciding after you sign a bill you're going to ignore parts and/or all of it, which is what Trump is doing, and this entire thing is a false equivalence

No a single FEMA manager told some of her subordinates to ignore MAGA houses when trying to reach people about insurance because MAGA people kept threatening to shoot FEMA workers. She got fired for it.

Meanwhile, Trump has actively been denying FEMA and other disaster relief funds from blue states purely as political retribution.
