With the nature of the Ural patrol model, is leaking oil normal? I’m in conversation with a guy regarding a 2000 model, and he says it’s leaking oil. I posted a pic the other day, but it’s pic rel. For what it is it looks pretty solid. What do you think it’s worth?
He says and I quote “It seeps oil but not enough to need topping off between oil changes”.
Is it worth 3k? Should I just say screw it and offer 3k cash?

Where it is leaking oil from?
And yes, Urals are known to weep a drop or two of oil every now and then. Very large drops.
The valve covers are held by a single nut against boxer crank pressure, that nut is doing gods work in keeping the covers on, the gaskets are basically doing fuck all.
Transmissions tend to leak from the cardan gasket and clutch shaft gasket.
Final drive tends to leak from the "disk gasket" and prop shaft gasket.
If there isn't a puddle of oil underneath the bike, it ain't got no oil in it.

This ain't no fancy show bike, you need to drop all notions of normalcy with them, you will have gasoline on your balls, your boots will get soaked by oil, your hands will be greasy as shit all the time with these things.
You just have to accept it, it is basically a 30s bike after all, you're lucky to even get modern gaskets instead of old school felt seals and gaskets.

Only thing on the bottom that could leak is the base gasket itself, but those rarely if ever go bad unless you pull the cylinder.
Meanwhile on top you have the pushrod tubes, their gaskets tend to get brittle with time and start leaking, which will then travel along the base to the underside.
To replace them you'll have to pull the cylinders out, which means you'll also have to replace the base gaskets.
At that point might as well get new piston rings too, albeit at 7k km the ones in there should still be quite fine.

Definitely not the bike for you. You want some throwaway japshit in that case, that's turnkey and ride. With Urals, working on them is a part of the experience and a very major one to boot. On some japshit pulling the engine is a big operation that you might do as a last resort, on Urals it's just another weekend activity.

It's a process to even get them started, aside for that one you've been linking having an electric starter that you can abuse for a while.

Personally I wouldn't have it any other way, I'm dead set that my Ural is the best bike I've ever owned, I'm not letting this one go, ever.

DR650 = better offroad
KLR650 = better onroad

Either would be fine with doing a 30 minute commute. If you're going to be on the highway, I'd recommend KLR because the extra size and weight will help avoid you being bullied by trucks and wind.

Go with the Kawasaki. They hold their value well and are probably the most reliable of your options if you want to keep it for a few years. Also the high redline is pure fun.

>>
>>28955013
post recall they're fine, too. Starting this year they realized where they fucked up with the number 5 crankshaft bushing. Even if you get one that's had the recall work done it'll be fine - it was literally one overtorqued nut from the factory and they figured it out pretty quick.
Huge fuck up on 'saki's part, but they fixed it pretty quick. Also don't rule out the 10+ year old models of zx6, the engine is pretty much unchanged.

Of course anon, happy to help. I ride a 20 year old zx6 and it still rides incredible. They're good machines, easy to work on, and the character of a kawasaki i4 is just so distinct, especially with modern ram air systems. Not really a mile limit for Japanese water-cooled engines. Air cooled engines wear their pistons out anywhere from 30-60k depending on how much they overheated in traffic.
More importantly, is it due for valve adjustment and was it ever done when due, was the oil changed, etc.
>>
>>28955191
BMWs and Nihon baikus could be 100k and still run fine. I wouldn't say the same for KTMs.

i just said in the post before that that it was 36C on Tuesday. The hottest weather I've ever ridden in was 102F, last summer in early June. This is equal to 39C. On that day I was also wearing the same leather jacket, airbag vest, etc. In my personal experience, with a little thought - i sometimes wrap a wet scarf around my neck and chest when it's very hot, and I have a very comprehensive set of winter gear - riding can be comfortable from 3F to 102F. That's -16C to 39C

>>
What are the baby steps to finding an electrical problem in a pretty much new bike?
> 390 adventure r 3k miles
> hit a deep puddle last sunday, washed the bike after (maybe relevant, don’t know)
> this morning ride to work no problems
> end of day turn on bike, screen comes on, fuel pump primes as usual
> hit ignition, power cuts, bike loses all power (clock reset etc)
> hear some relays go click clack for a bit whenever turning key off and on
> whenever I push ignition, displayed voltage display drops to 8V, then power cuts and comes back. Starter motor doesn’t even attempt to move
> same problem when using starter cables and a different battery

I have warranty but it will take the dealership days to arrange a transport and the bike is in a parking lot so I’d rather give it a try and fix it on the spot tomorrow, any ideas? Pull some fuses? Could it be bad ground?

On my way to pick up my R3 and a bunch of shit has been going wrong. I didn't get my new helmet because the delivery requires signature and the delivery driver got there before the scheduled time yesterday. They rescheduled to today.... and then missed the delivery time and moved the delivery window to the evening, after I cleared my schedule to accept the delivery. I only got the cardo pro on my old helmet about 2.5 hours before making it to the dealership, so hopefully it has enough time to set(manual says 4 hours). Wanted to put the second helmet kit in the old helmet instead of the new one because it has the smaller speakers, but oh well. And I forgot to bring my camera to record the ride home. And then the dealership told me the frame sliders that were supposed to arrive yesterday are only gonna get here tomorrow, so they'll send them to me to install. It's gonna be a miserable 2.5 hour ride home in the rain. Thanks for reading my blog.

let me remind you that you bought a open box item (bikes come in boxes like phones) so the bike has been sitting for a long time with a battery in it, the shop fags ride it around to lunch and stuff every now and then they just disconnect the wheel speed sensors so the mileage doesnt increase. i hope you diddnt pay NIB (new in box) pricing for a used bike. good luck with the new battery.

some bikes just measure the speed of the output shaft and determine vehicle speed that way but most modern bikes have 2 wheel speed sensors, you just disconnect them

Get the voltometer out, test the battery, make sure it's 12.5. Then hit the starter and see if it's dropping below 10v. If it isn't, you probably have a shit connection somewhere.

Did you take the battery out and put a different one in or just jump it? Shorted plates in a battery will keep it from going even with a jump.
Also, check volts from the battery terminals NOT the cables clamped to the terminals. Corrosion there causes symptoms like you describe.

do you actually put your helmet in the bag every time? I just kept the box around because I'm worried the bag would get dirty and scratch my shit up.
the helmet is always a bit dirty after a ride. dust and bugs and shit and I don't want to clean it every single time. but if I put it in the bag, it's going to put grit in the bag and the grit is going to scratch the visor. am I missing something?

My self preservation instinct has been kicking my ass recently. I’m too careful now I feel, not as fast or skilled as I used to be. Is this just what getting older does? Maybe I should do a track day this year, been wanting to do one on this bike since I got it.

The sooner Instagram and Twitter die, the better. I genuinely wish Tumblr hadn't been drug out behind the woodshed and euthanized. Most of that site was people sharing shit they were interested in, obsessively so, and way less clout farming and outrage bait.

Do you need a car that can tow if you're going to do track days? I hate trucks and SUVs, but I want to ride on a track and keep hearing you really shouldn't ride to the track. The closest tracks near me are all two hours away in any given direction.

You don't need a truck, I tow my bike with a damn Nissan Altima and a rented uhaul trailer.
You could bike there, pack some water and food but after hours sending it, the ride home gets distorted between being tired and losing your sense of speed

It dosint matter how you get it there. If you dont want to rent a trailer there are lightweight motorcycle trailers.

I'm looking at getting a bigger dual sport. ktm 500 probably. Ive got a drz that came with a set of knobbies and sumo wheels and it's actually really sick to have the option. I don't see many sumo wheels for ktm 500s though. I probably ride 3/4 of the time off-road. single track stuff or gravel roads. street stuff is just around town, usually no highway.
is it fine just to run knobbies all the time? I just want you to tell me I don't have to buy a set of warp 9s for the hypothetical ktm 500 I'm looking at, and I'll be ok with what I'm using it for.

Too black and white.

Anon, you see self preservation as a met negative when in actuality its a positive. Your riding style is just changing, you're probably still as fast as you used to be but now your frontal lobe realizes the streets don't give you trophies or cash. All they give is consequences. If it makes you feel any better there's a saying.

I have a truck and I've been debating getting pic related. I dont like loading/unloading sport bikes into the back of trucks, plus I need the pickup bed to lock up all the track day stuff. I dont have room to store a enclosed trailer. But I'll probably keep renting u haul trailers.

It depends. The "wHAt iF YOu LAYERDOWN" FUD makes no fucking sense like dude a race track surrounded by other people with trucks and trailers is the best place to have to get a broken bike home from unless you live on the fucking moon instead of in the general direction anyone else is going but fast bikes can be super tiring to ride hard especially on tight tracks. Novice group is generally slow as shit including (You) so it's more doable.

Just get a truck you like instead. You can buy a small/mini truck from the 90s or a g-body el camino for $8k or less.
These 90s Dakota's are smaller than most cars and much less bloated.

I'd just lower it and make it easier to put bikes on.

i bought a folding trailer for like 400$ off marketplace. shit rocks. i mean, the build quality kind of sucks. its rickety and janky and the suspension sucks and it shakes like crazy when pulling it. but it folds up flat and i just push it against the wall of my garage and it takes up basically zero space. it's awesome i use it all the time. maybe some day when i have more space i'll get an enclosed trailer (that i could also use as storage!) but for now the folding trailer gets the job done.

What can I do to be able to see behind me? I tried adjusting the mirrors a bunch but basically I have to twist my body out of the way to see directly behind me. Also, how should I position my body on it? I noticed that the more upright I am, the more I feel like a sail. So I've been leaning in as far as I can(chest touching the gas tank) when accelerating and going back to upright when decelerating.

Could be corrosion on battery terminals. Take it out and give both bike & bat terminals a good fine sandpaper rub until they contact surfaces are nice and shiny. If you want, rub it with two teaspoons of baking soda in water and dry.
I've had this problem before, it was not relays clicking, it was poor contact sc on battery lmao.
