I’m thinking about getting another 2 stroke dirt bike.
More specifically an rm250 but I’m a little concerned about parts availability.
Anons that know dirt bikes, what are your thoughts on this?
Also- a little autism side note; I’m obsessed with the idea of street legalizing it. Assuming someone did street legalize a dirt bike for local rural use, how good or bad of an idea would that be?
Would a YZ250 be better considering aftermarket support and the fact that they still make them in 2026?
>>
>>28954362
But does it meet the EURO 7 standard?
>>
>>28954393
Probably not, but I’m in burger land.
>>
>Replace transmission oil every 10 hours >air filter every 5
>top-end rebuilds are required every 50
Don't let the idea of having to rebuild your top end every 3 months keep your dream a meme. Go for it anon.
>>
>>28954422
Are you being sarcastic?
How hard is it to rebuild top ends?
>>
>>28954451
It's easy until eventually nothing is within tolerance so have to rebuild entire engine
>>
>>28954451
No. 2 strokes are race bikes made to haul ass for a few hours and get rebuilt. You can't really daily them because none of the ones one the market are designed for that.

You're going to be a motorcycle mechanic to do it.

Euro emissions standards are such fucking cancer. Europoors deserve everything bad that happens to them for this alone.

>another 2 stroke dirt bike.
>another
Come the fuck on, man. What fucking 2 stroke is fun down low in rpms like you sit in when commuting?
>>
>>28955106
Don't blame me for this.

I didn't vote for any leftist bureaucrats from Brussels, and I hate them too (but Brexit didn't help the UK at all).

I’ve had 2 stroke dirt bikes before. Never for road use though.
I’m in a position where I’d like another dirt bike, but I’d also like to ride my bike on the road. What do?
I’m interested in getting into motocross and tricks and stuff.

>>28955233
Used wr250. But you're never going to be truly competitive at mx with a dual sport. They detune those engines for longevity, and most are heavier than a dedicated dirt bike.
>>
>>28955081
My CR250R manual says "replace piston and ring every 8 hours or 2 races"

Two stroke road bikes will 30,000 quite happliy because they're supposed to do that.

Realistically speaking, does anybody ACTUALLY do that? I owned a 2016 crf450r and it said something similar, but idk how anyone could afford to ride em in that case.
>>
>>28955393
Nowhere close to the same as an R class dirt bike.
>>28955428
Of course nobody actually does it.
But honestly how many hours do you put on your 450?
Compare a weekend riding around Glamis to weekend driving around town.
>>
>>28955544
Honestly I couldn’t really tell ya. I probably put less than 20 hours on it. lol
I mean am correct in assuming unless you run a dirt bike HARD, you basically never really need to rebuild the top end?
I get it- MX bikes to street bikes are basically like comparing drag cars to a Tacoma; but I had a little 90cc atv as a kid, and that thing ran and ran and RAN. I don’t even know if we ever changed the oil in that thing. Didn’t give any problems at all.

Anons, is this a good deal on a 2006 with a top end that has 7 hours on it? Apparently it has no issues.
>>
>>28955351
Used to have one of those from 2000

Probably the best dirt bike I've ever been on. Working on them was also a treat. I can still smell my premix like it was yesterday :(
>>

Pretty much. Keep your air filter clean and sealed does huge benefits for engine life. I had a YZ400F that I was just dicking around on mostly, not competitive or anything. If I followed the service schedule I'd be broke. But in its 15 years with me it hasn't even needed a valve adjustment. I would check them annually, but never had to touch them. Rebuild? Not a chance. All I did was change the oil and filter every few rides and put in a clean air filter after every riding day.

Most people aren't going to be riding hard enough or competitive enough to be wearing out a 250cc 2 stroke top end every 8 hours. And if you are competing you're almost certainly on a 4 stroke not a 2 stroke.
>>
>>28955715
That's not a 2006. 2005+ had an aluminum frame. That's a steel frame.
>>
>>28955869
Hey, good call. That went completely over my head. I’ve been stressed out today so I didn’t even think about that.

if you want to ride on the road you want a dual sport.
they don't make 2 smokes that are road legal any more.
if you are lucky you could find like an older ktm 300 or yz 250 that someone got plated. im talking like, 2005-2010 sort of range. it used to be that if you put signals and shit on a bike you could get a street title for it. in some of the western states it's comparatively easy to get a dirt bike plated.

otherwise you're looking actual dual sports. and it's probably only a ktm 500. that's the lightest, most powerful plated bike out there. high maintenance intervals compared to a street bike but blessedly merciful compared to a dirt bike. crf450rl is honda's option. kinda close but heavier and less powerful. but also more comfortable to ride.

cheaper than that you're looking at probably a wr250r. drz400 is going to be more heavy than you like. the klx 300 and crf 300 are worse options.

those are your options if you want to ride on the streets legally. i've got a wr250r and it's great. it's heavier than i wish it was and it's not as powerful as i wish it was but i could probably pass it down to my kids. the thing is bulletproof and very pleasant to ride. it's not an mx bike though.

I mean for 2200 it still might be worth looking at. Looks like he modded it for more woods/trail type riding. Looks to be lower than normal in the back and the forks are raised in the clamps to lower the front. Looks like an 18" wheel in the back. Tank looks bigger than normal too. Doesn't look totally roached out either.

You'll lose a lot of parts compatibility/availability since the YZs have been pretty much exactly the same bike from 2005 to present. I can't pin the exact year of that one but it's a 1997-1998 at oldest and 2004 at newest. I'm going with 2002-2004 based off the kick starter shape.

In the states that allow you to modify and register off-highway vehicles theres some hoops to jump through, inspection is usually required.
>insurance
Good luck
>"road legal"
Youre running on a stator with no battery.
LEDs are a fucking Godsend here but youre still limited and I suggest getting an aftermarket high amp stator and burying a small lithium battery somewhere for idling.
Added wiring for turn signals/headlight/brake aren't that big of a deal but you still have to mount it all and wire it in.
Im not a fan of kidney harpoons but you still have to figure out how to park it when you get to your destination. Carrying a shop stand in a backpack gets old. A slide-in axle stand (how common is hollow rear axles anymore?) is just asking for someone to fuck with it.
Are you going to add a key so I cant just jump on it, give a kick and ride away on your shit?
Well you better bring a cable lock too because I can load my CR250 into my truck by myself without a ramp (a disc lock isnt going to do shit on such a light bike).

Thats the basics.
But theres all the little nuances that creep up.
Guess how many miles a dirt tire lasts on asphalt.
Ever have that random pebble come off the front tire and hit your hand?
Now imagine youre in a wide sweeper on the highway, committed to the arc and you just have to deal with everything that comes up off the wheel (pic).

>I mean for 2200 it still might be worth looking at.
Id go buy it right now.
Im more of a CR/KX kind of guy (I've owned like 50 bikes, not a single Suzuki, weird) but the YZs have nice steering geometry out of the box- probably better than KX but kawi has bettwr suspension.
>>
>>28956051
Technically I lied.
I bought a KDX50 for the grandbaby thats actually a relabeled RM junior.
But I've never ridden it myself so..

I really appreciate that input friend. That eases my mind a lot about grabbing another dirt bike if I decide to go grab one.
>Most people aren't going to be riding hard enough or competitive enough to be wearing out a 250cc 2 stroke top end every 8 hours
That sounds crazy now to think about but yeah, right? Haha Like it’s crazy to think about wearing out a piston in 8 hours. Wild.
>>28956036
>>28956051
Do you guys think if I got it for 2 grand I could make money on it if I decided I didn’t want it later?
I will say it is a positive sign of a dude literally keeps his bike in the house.
>98-04
Honestly I actually prefer the steel frames. They look prettier to me, plus the power bands were less tame to my understanding.
>>28956035
That’s a beautiful bike, friend. Yeah, I’ve heard about companies that handle the paperwork for you, but by the time you do all that, I reckon it’d be easier to just grab a DR350 or something.
I feel ya on the power. I’d like to get another dirt bike because they are fun, but at the same time, I would like something I can go to and from work with.

>I’d like to get another dirt bike because they are fun, but at the same time, I would like something I can go to and from work with.
you either get two bikes or you get one bike that is a compromise.
honestly, for WRs and DRZs, they hold value really well. you can almost always find one for like 3500$ or 4000$ and then turn around and sell it for basically the same price.
if you've not been on a motorcycle in a while, i'd suggest it as a starting point, with the expectation that you probably get rid of it in a year or so. you might like street riding more than you think, or maybe you don't. but having a machine that does both OKAY means that you can find what you like and what works for you. and in all reality you might just hang on to the dual sport as an "extra bike" for friends to ride with you after you upgrade.

i'd suggest it over a ktm500 or a crf450 because its several thousand dollars cheaper.
