I have a 99 tacoma that has spent two winters in the rust belt now. It's been running with a small lift for four years no problem. I thought I had warped drums and the shoes had some chips, replaced. Thought it was my wheel cylinder, replaced. Pedal has always been a little soft but its a 99, bled the brakes, a little better. Is this a drive line issue? Im thinking about replacing my carrier bearing next, maybe i need to shim the axle. Maybe its axle wrap.

any insight?

how old are your tires?
>>

I got the truck in ND in '22 and it has the E rated tires that the previous owner put on them.

Now that Im thinking about it. I had suspension issues and a *tink* noise when I first picked it up (134k miles, somebody babied this thing.) I replaced my carrier bearing and the noise persisted but it drove fine.

I just checked the carrier bearing again and its shot. But I had progressively worse drum brake noise coming out of this winter and then one day it just started vibrating real bad and I quit driving it long distance about three weeks ago.

It has a less than 3" lift on it. Im going to replace the carrier bearing. shim it i guess? the brakes are still grinding at low speeds though...

check the date code
5 years is getting up there and they could be starting to delaminate
it may not be nearly as obvious as picrel, it can present of lots of small bumps as well

are you fucking with me?

If your brakes are grinding they're likely siezed on as well which will cause vibrations as well as start fires.

Ill pay you 500 bucks if you replace the driveshaft carrier bearing and it doesnt fix the issue.

deal. $100 in the morning gets me a new bearing. Im thinking about welding together a stack of something as a spacer...

or u joints
>>
>>28956159
U joints are fine. Im worried the splines in the carrier bearing are going to be fucked. I guess I just need a knew drive shaft if they are. Im going to get the carrier bearing now. Will report back this afternoon. wish me luck guys.

Lot of lessons learned. I had replaced the drive shaft four years ago because the u joints were gone. When I put the drive shaft on, i put the carrier bearing on upside down. It carrys the drive shaft at least a half inch higher.

everything is running smooth now.

Nice.
Glad to hear anon.

Sweet. Saved me 500 bucks.
Did you put a spacer on it?
Will help with u-joint life.
>>
grab your pinion and shake it
if it shakes try tightening it
do the same for axle shafts

vibrate yourself at a different frequency which counteracts the vibrations of the car. Simple as.

No spacer available, I pressed it on at 134ft*lbs and backed it off then torqued to 60 and bent the castle nut tab over. I would prefer to have the spacers but they were thin ribbons of metal. I asked an old timer and he looked at me like I was crazy and said "put it back together!". U joints are only four years old. Gonna grease them, rotate my tires and hope I can get another 20k miles out of it.

Everybody was saying its axle wrap, backlash etc. I think its an acceptable amount of play in the backlash, no more than 1/2", 3/8".

I found that this stuff is a common problem on these trucks so if rears its ugly head again ill be looking into shims and diff solutions. but so far so good.
