Why does my NB keep killing clutch safety switches? New one lasted a week before I have to spam it to get it to start again just like the last one. It still has the little rubber pad that pushes the switch and I have the pedal free play adjusted as per the FSM.

Yes and yes. It streamlines air going over the car with the top down to minimize buffeting.

66-4D0 in this diagram. It's an electrical interlock that does not allow power to the starter if you're not pressing the clutch pedal while cranking. It's more of a North American market thing, JDM/AUDM/EUDM cars may not have one.

As much as I would prefer that, I like the potential anti-theft it provides if the would-be thief doesn't know to push the clutch to start it, especially given NB1 does not have an immobilizer.

There's a few different ways to it, plenty of YouTube tutorials. Putting a switch on the line to the relay of the starter or fuel pump is one.

>Putting a switch on the line to the relay of the starter or fuel pump is one.

https://files.catbox.moe/3dgofo.jpg

I put the isolator on my E46 on the main feed into the fuel pump; so long as the switch is rated at the same amp as the fuse, it's all good to go. I also prefer a pump isolator to a starter isolator due to the fact that, with a pump isolator, the car *will* start very briefly before shutting back off, which may alert you to the thieves presence and increase the chances of you discovering that your car is in the middle of being stolen. It might also make the thieves think that something is wrong with the car, making them give up and move on after trying to crank it over a few times, whereas a no crank situation might lead them to think an isolator is present, and also give them time to look for said isolator if they feel it's worth it.

I also have one of those twist battery isolators the goes on the negative terminal on a couple of my cars, and if the car I'm in has a distributor, I'll also take the rotor arm out if I feel it necessary.
>>
Fuck the earplugs make things 100x worse, the studs on the end catch the wind with the windows down and jackhammer buffetting directly into your ear canal. I also think my straight pipe exhaust is resonating in the cabin with the windows up so I can't even quiet things down like that.

Early spring was great because I had my toque pulled down over my ears which acted like muffs.

The clutch safety switch has no idea what the shifter is doing. In the event of clutch hydraulic failure you can still start it in gear to get it moving off the starter because the pressing the clutch pedal won't actually actuate the clutch, but still make the switch happy. Also, I don't want to bypass it as I said earlier, I want it operating as designed.

So I was taking my brand new ND3 for a drive and it scared the ever living fuck out of me with how unstable it was in turns, even low speed stoplight turns. Body roll wasn't anything serious so there should be no reason it was so willing to toss the rear out. I figured it had to be tire pressures, and sure enough I was showing 60psi in all four tires. I assume the dealer jacked it up to make the car tail happy for test drives, otherwise I have no idea. By chance yesterday morning, the dealer also sent a spam email about selling me tires for my new car (???) so I'm thinking they tried to set me up to blow one or more up.

Yeah the ND feels a bit different, doesn't it? I always smile and wave to fellow miatafags but you definitely have the feeling that you're in a Different Car when your ND crosses paths with a cute little headlight-popping NA. How much of a sin is it to just swap out the timing belt rather than doing the whole timing/pump service? I've a new NB with 170,000km and a ever so slightly weeping rocker cover gasket, I wouldn't mind just swapping out the belt while I'm in there so I know it's not going to snap on me. I did the accessory belts the other weekend and one was very brittle so I don't trust timing belt.

>>
>>28970250
I've done a few NA/NB timing belts and never seen one with good idler/tensioner pulley bearings. They're not expensive, have one bolt each, and you have to touch the tensioner pulley bolt anyway even if you don't replace it, plus the time you'll waste with the car down if you get it apart and find they are in fact not good and have to order some. The water pump is a little more involved but it also has the possibility of having a bad bearing and/or a leak you can't see with it together. Same goes for the front crank seal and both cam seals. It's your car but I wouldn't skip any of these listed items unless I had personally done them myself on the vehicle in the last few years and they still check out.
>>
>>28970294
ask the owner for service history
it'll need refreshed brakes at least
>>
>>28970250
I'd say it's a sin, not on miat but an earlier car I owned I did exactly that and the water pump went out two months later at 150k+ miles (probably due to the new belt anyways considering the timing)
>>

>>28970586

Thanks, I'll try and get it all done in one.

Follow up unrelated question: Who's swapped out the stock non-bose speakers? I consider the stock ones particularly bad and would like to replace them, is a component set the way to go? I just have the floor speakers and the door tweeters, nothing behind the seats. I'm a solderlet so would rather just run them from the headunit.
>>
>>28971499
Replacing speakers doesn’t require electrical work. There are positive and negative quick disconnects you just pull off. The hard part is taking off the door panels without snapping any of the clip things, but that’s less of an issue with miats than most cars.
Also, soldering car wires the traditional way, while I do it, is supposedly bad anyway as the solder material can crack and degrade with vibration and humidity/temp changes.

This. A previous owner of my car had the interior reupholstered, but whoever did it had broken most of the screw hole pegs as the top pad just kind of fell off the door card. I repaired it by slotting some some 8mm ID aquarium tubing over the top of what was left, then I filled them with JBWeld Plastic Epoxy. Still holding up 4 years later, so pretty good bodge if I do say so myself.

They're almost unique here in pastaland. Fuckhuge pickups are very rare in general and as such they have no reputation over the obvious "imagine how small their dick must be". Personally I see those trucks as a power fantasy, and I associate them to nutjobs because, on top of the implications of needing a power fantasy on wheels, they're so out of place and impractical that one needs to be not entirely sane nor well adjusted to make such a deliberate choice.

nta, but you'll be surprised at how tall a classic 500 or Mini actually is compared to an MX-5; they're still obviously very small cars, but they're more narrow than they are short, especially so for the 500. Minis are pretty comfy to sit in, but 500s genuinely feel claustrophobic thanks to that excessively narrow body.

Plenty of clean ones out there. They've sold over a million now. If you're interested in NA or NB, check thoroughly for rust in the rocker panels. Otherwise you can buy most parts used on marketplace from part outs.

to the anon that asked a a thread or two ago about the verus rear diffuser weight - didn't get a chance to actually weigh it, but by my hand estimate it can't weigh any more than 6-7 lbs. the mid body panels, rear suspension panels, and diffuser combined couldn't have weighed more than 12-15 lbs when I held them all together.
that said, after installing them there is now a strange engine/exhaust resonance bordering on rattle that I have to figure out because it's not pleasant.
>do the aero panels work?
idk, it's hard to tell because I swapped my OEM BBS wheels w/CC2's for 17x8 hypergrams with ECS 02's at the same time which make way more of a difference. might be my imagination but it definitely feels like it pulls harder downshifting into 4th at 60-70 mph. butt dyno perceives less overall turbulence around the car.

does this anime have lots of miata or was this a one off shot?
>>

So far only this episode has a miata, the other time (prior episodes) they took a drive it was another car model can't recall what it was.
Anyways, if there is another scenario where the two main couple needs to go to a remote hotspring location maybe they'll take the miata again but then again it was a friend's car and they were just borrowing it.

It's a fresh self tapper, right at the edge of the wheel which is the only accessible part from the wheel well. Makes me think it was done on purpose and not just bad luck. Canadians are some really shitty people.

Ok nc+ cucks with tcs enabled every time you turn the car on. What happens if you just rev it up at a standstill and dump the clutch??? like how does it stop you from doing a skid? You have to literally disable the shit anytime you have to do a skid? My problem is I don't plan my skids, the shit it just happens. so like you have to plan skids? Am I understanding this right?
>>
>>28978398
you sound like a gangstalker.
same thing happened to me not long ago, i went on a bike ride, everything was fine until i went and refilled gas, went inside the store and came back, rode like 100 meters and noticed my tire was deflating, had a screw right in the middle of the rear tire.
then the next day i went to the tire shop to change the tube, i noticed a very weird behavior from the clerk, like he was trying to take as much time as possible, then he said they didn't have my size and told me they would order it. waited a few days they call me "so sorry sir we ordered the wrong size, we'll order the right one and call you back, waited one more week, not a single call, nothing, went there, picked up my wheel and left. i ended up ordering and changing the tube myself. at least now i know how to change a tube, ty gangstalkers

Does anyones car judder when releasing with just the clutch and barely any gas? Can't tell if I have hotspots on the clutch causing it (from learning) or if I'm potentially just lugging the engine with not enough revs
>>
>>28978828
My NB is like this, I also wonder. I've gotten better at it so it's mostly minimised but it happens easily. Someone earlier said they could easily start their car moving just with the clutch, mine doesn't like it at all however.
>>
>>28978490
yeah, you turns TCS/DSC/LGBTQ+ off every time you turn the car on. if that's too much of an existential burden for you get an older miat. they're both valid options, though I'm pretty sure you can enable persistent disable between startups with a modified ECU on everything up to ND3. ND3 still lives in cuckville for now, and may forever.
>>
>>28979134
I can get rid of the judder by going just a bit lower in the bite point and it will take off no judder then but if I go even slightly higher, it does judder.
>>
>>28978828
>>28979134
Depends on how you do it.
Bring clutch to just a hair before the bite, then go really slowly into the bite area and as you start moving you can start releasing more quickly. If you do anything too fast or slowly it’ll judder.
Yes, the juddering is the engine lugging unless your clutch is borked somehow.
I do it occasionally. It’s best to just give a little throttle though. It’s much easier to do in my jeep with torque down low and a much longer clutch pedal press.

All four coil springs on my 2002 NB are corroded and I want to replace them. But I'm not sure to what extent.
>not interested in lowering the ride height
>unsure if the dampers/shock absorbers would need replacing too, hard to see how bad they are exactly
>unsure if replacing the springs on the current shock absorbers would be worth the daunting job it looks to be, as opposed to replacing the whole thing with new coilovers
>don't want to overpay either naturally
Idk what do.
>>
>>28980343
I think it's overblown, too. But, if you come off the track or road sideways and your tires dig in to soft dirt or the sand traps on racetracks or there's a rut right there, it'll happen. And miatas fucking love going sideways.
>>

>>28980373
I had the same problem, and I worked out that the price difference between a decent set of height and damping adjustable coilovers vs. a new set of OEM spec springs + shocks was around £150. I just got the coilovers, and I'm extremely glad I did. You may not want or need to adjust the ride height or damping, but for the sake of that very marginal price difference, it's very nice to have.
>>
>>28980658
>£150
that's a good price. Do you know if that's still achievable?
I was doing cursory research at work earlier and the lowest I could find was in the region of £300 for all four.
>>
>>28980663
The *difference* was £150. I think all four springs, shocks, and top mounts, were somewhere around £750, whereas the coilovers were just north of £900. I wasn't very happy to spend that money initially, but it made a hell of a difference over the standard setup, and now 5 years later they're still as good as the day I installed them. I regret nothing.

When you say your springs are corroded, do you mean they've got surface rust, or do you mean that they're utterly shagged and are hanging on by a thread?
>>
>>28980373
just get inexpensive (not cheap) coilovers if you're gonna hang onto the car. if it's on the original suspension replacing the springs alone would be kinda dumb.
>>28980663
I believe the bonganon above you indicated a £150 DIFFERENCE in price between replacement springs and coilovers, not £150 total. to say you ought to be skeptical of £150 coilovers would be quite the understatement. wish I could point you in the right direction otherwise but I only know NDs and that case you're paying around a grand, give or take, after tax in USD for inexpensive but good coilovers, ND springs being around $200-$300 by comparison.
>>
>>28980715
>>28980726
>whereas the coilovers were just north of £900
ack I misread. "difference".
but five plus years sounds good, a review I read for the £300 one said they hoped for it to last even half that. I am sceptical of them being too cheap in any case.
but in bringing down the costs, yeah just keeping the dampers but with new springs seems counterproductive.
>When you say your springs are corroded, do you mean they've got surface rust, or do you mean that they're utterly shagged and are hanging on by a thread?
surface rust and they came up in the MOT, all four. I've Thesus'd a lot of the car since buying it in 2023 at this point apart from the suspension, that's one of the few things I don't think have been touched since 2002. So it's become the priority job for car maintenance.
>>
>>28980731
For what it's worth, my brother has a set of £300 coilovers on his Scirocco, and they're shockingly shit. Extremely stiff, terrible ride control, and virtually no travel - we both agreed that they were a complete waste of money. Never cheap out on coilovers, you absolutely get what you pay for.

As for your rust, if you're on a budget, then you may very well get away with just taking the springs off, wire brushing them clean, and then coating them in rust convertor to protect them. Springs generally don't go bad until they rust away or crack, it's the shocks that make the biggest difference. Obviously new springs would be the "correct" thing to do, but I don't think they'd make much of a difference in as far as handling and ride quality goes, if that's your concern.
>>
>>28980797
do you still have the same subframe as seen in >>28980658 or have you replaced it too?
the MOT cert claims the front subframe also corroded (but not "seriously weakened") but it's black compared to what I see in that pic.

it sounds like I would want to be renewing the springs anyway if I want to replace the shocks, and again I don't think they have been replaced in 24 years.
I'm leaning towards what you did and combine springs and shocks separately. I'll need spring compressors too.

>do you still have the same subframe as seen in >>28980658 (You) or have you replaced it too?
Still have the same everything; sans the coilovers, I've done nothing to the car besides regular servicing and some superficial things like RAYBRIG headlights and delrin window bushes. Pretty sure all the suspension bushes are dry rotting and fucked, and I know my camber bolts are completely shagged as the alignment shop tried and failed to adjust them. Not exactly ideal, but still drives and tracks fine, so I'm in no rush to replace anything. Hell, I haven't even bothered putting the door cards back on after I replaced the old speakers 4 years ago.

>the MOT cert claims the front subframe also corroded (but not "seriously weakened") but it's black compared to what I see in that pic.
Advisories change from tester to tester, especially rust related items. The W brace on my old 350z was utterly rotten and barely hanging on, but whether or not it was listed as an advisory was dependant on the Tester and/or how much money I left on the driver's seat :) .

>I'm leaning towards what you did and combine springs and shocks separately. I'll need spring compressors too.
I bought MeisterR ZetaCRD coilovers, friendo. Couldn't be bothered with the hassle of rebuilding the original suspension for what little difference in price there was.

It took less than 30k miles for it to crack and that's with the most current pipe (they kept making it thicker because they break so often but it still breaks). I don't like fixing things that shouldn't need fixing especially when the fix is only good enough to get back to the same state it was in when it cracked

>>
>>28983850
No. Probably a loose belt. Have you checked that first?

Yes both accessory belts have to come off during a timing belt replacement. The belt tension is manually set, I would guess it's probably too loose.
>>
>>28983850
If it's an NC, it's really really easy to bend the return line fitting on the pump since it's a tab with only one bolt. I leaned on it once, bent it, and it started letting air in. I had to remove it and bendld the tab back straight so it would seal properly. Would check yours just in case

my NC has always done it (put over 30k miles on at this point). there's also a slight metallic rattle with the clutch pedal released.

Think I paid £2,000 for mine in 2021, and always regretted the fact that I probably could have bid him down at least £500; taking a quick look recently had me realise that even rotten shitters are around that £2,000 mark now, so Christ knows what mine is worth today. I sure as shit wouldn't pay that much, that's for sure.

Fuck me this.

Looking for an NA to tinker with/ restore alongside my ND, but they're like £6000 for any 1.8 that isnt totally rotten. Even the dogshit 90bhp 1.6s are £4k+

Anyway, taking my ND down to Andorra later this week. Pic last years trip to Switzerland.

I prefer how revvy and fun my NA6 is, compared to my NA8. NA8 is faster but less exciting.
>>
>>28987611
For some reason I've never found high revving cars fun; I rarely ever topped 7,000 in my M3, despite the redline being somewhere north of 8,000. I've also never driven another Miata besides my own, but I'd really like to see the difference in how the 1.6 and 1.8 differ in character. I doubt it'd change my mind on the matter, but at least I can say I tried.

I'm not sure that'd help much in my case. I'm not particularly fond of a high rpm exhaust note, unless it's something exotic like a V10 or 12. V8's are *kind of* passable, but I still much prefer the throaty rumble of a low revving push rod. S65's for example do absolutely nothing for me, and the same goes for sport bikes and such the rev to over 12,000. High revving engines just don't do anything for me. I vaguely remember hearing what I think was a Busso V6 at around 9,000rpm, and I quite liked that, but I've never heard anything like it since.

I'm that anon. Unfiltered, real Lucky Strikes are the best goddamn cigarette on the planet. Delicious. They don't last very long though.
In some way unfiltered are better for you. You don't suck on it, you just breathe naturally as there's no resistance from the filter. So you don't have to breathe in as deeply. Also, with filtered cigarettes you occasionally breathe in parts of the coated fibers making up the filter.
>>
>>28988464
>no resistance from the filter. So you don't have to breathe in as deeply
Non-smokers don't know about flame control, but it's like trying to get a stoich ratio on your engine.
When you have to suck in really hard for a long while, the flame (cherry) gets hot. The hotter it is, the more carcinogens you get. A flame that barely stays alive tastes better than has fewer carcinogens.
A skilled smoker can keep an unfiltered lit with as cold of a cherry as possible.

I bought it in January from a boomer woman. PCV valve didn't pass the blow test so I replaced it for a whole $4. This ain't my first miat, got mine 19 years ago. I'll keep an eye on the grommet, you're right, they can fail too.

Spend over $15k restoring it.
Insurance payout $900 when a college-age chick rams into it.
Fuckin'-A I'm gonna take some shots, very depresssing, I miss that car.
'95 was 1.8. Torsen type-1 (never needs rebuilds, but slides out quicker than later Torsens). At least I took it to over 280k miles before some uni-age chick smammed an SUV into it.
I miss that NA so much.

I used to like the Camel plain or French Gitanes. No longer available
>>
>>28989830
I love the unfiltered camels, they’re somewhat easy to find and taste like tobacco should. They don’t last very long, burn quickly, they’re made for light breaths and if you pull too hard they get hot as fuck. Almost every person I’ve given one to coughed their ass off because they pulled as hard as you would on a filtered.
I didn’t know that Gitanes were discontinued- I will never smoke Lupin III’s preferred cigarette ;_;

I can explain in words how this works, but it's more of a feeling thing than anything; you just need to rev match - that's it. You have to make a rough guess as to where the engine revs will want to be at in whatever gear you're changing to; 1000 rpm jumps between gears are pretty typical, but it varies from vehicle to vehicle depending on gear ratios. If you're at 3,000 rpm in 2nd gear, then after you push in the clutch and select 3rd gear, you'll want to "catch" the engine by lifting the clutch as it falls near 2,000 rpm. Putting this into words is all well and good, but again, you need to feel and experience it to really get it. Sound is far more useful than sight with this. Listen to how your engine sounds at the various rpms and try to match based on that rather than just staring at your rpm gauge, 'cause otherwise you'll likely not be able to act fast enough.

>>

Not an NB, no. You could build one for half that price, including the cost of the car. Hell, I was offered a turbo NB for £2,500 a couple years ago. I was dumb really, 'cause even though I'm not a turbo guy, that was still cheap as fuck. Probably could've swapped the turbo kit onto my NA and sold the NB for what I bought it for... Great, now I'm sad.
>>
>>28990698
Not a chance.
Poster above you. I've modded all 7 cars I've owned but would never buy a modded car unless it was incredibly cheap.
There's so much nuance to a custom forced induction car, do you know how it was tuned? Do they use a fuel pressure regulator or a proper standalone ECU tune? Do you know why they chose the injectors they did?
I got picrel for 3,025 GBP this year from an old lady. Not someone's hackjob.
I would not get that, is what I'm saying.

If you have to ask... you'll never know.

actually i'm not shopping as it happens, i mainly posted it for the engine bay decoration. i know the price is much too high. he even reduced it by £250 since i noticed it while looking up how much people are listing their NBs for.
it even has this grotesque wing, look at this shit. at that point it's ballast.
>There's so much nuance to a custom forced induction car
i would go as far as to say i don't trust any formerly NA car that has been boosted by private owner. it was modified to be driven hard, now he's charging it as a price like he had only just did all that work to it?

As someone who lives where cars don't rust, and just bought a manual NB for half that price, this really gets me:
>Extensive restoration for rust repair
Oh no. No no no. Maybe that's normal for you guys.
In some ways, that guy had taste, but in most ways he did not.
I mean, look at the pic in your post, he spray painted the AC vent and emergency light button surrounds.
2k GBP at best.
>>
>>28990736
>Oh no. No no no. Maybe that's normal for you guys.
Very much par for the course. Unless the car has been dry stored for the vast majority of it's life, it'll either be rotten or hopefully have thousands spent in rust repairs. Obviously this means there are plenty of bodge jobs going around, caked in filler and underseal, but they're usually not hard to spot. The fact that he's had the work done and allegedly has records and photos is actually pretty damn good, as you can be sure you're not buying a rot box, and it's likely better protected now than it have was from the factory, but you could probably buy *two* clean NB's for the same price as all the work he's done. There's no denying the work is impressive and expensive, but the mods completely ruin it. Almost makes me laugh how he shrugs off the spoiler by saying that you can get a boot cheap, completely ignoring the fact that it would still need to be painted to match the fuckign car, costing hundreds extra.

>In some ways, that guy had taste
Yeah, it was just poor taste.

>2k GBP at best.
Annoyingly enough I would say it *is* objectively worth more, probably around 3,000 to 3,500 just because it is supercharged and it is rust free, but you'd still be sat waiting for the right person to come along thanks to all those awful mods. He'd be better off selling the wheels and wing separate from the car.

Noted and thank you. I just can't seem to find the right balance yet. I'm only about 2 months in of driving manual (not daily and small sessions ). It's just hard to practice around here as the parking lots are shit and the roads are busy so I never get a chance to look at the rpms. At least I haven't stalled in 3 weeks.
