Getting my Tesla delivered soon. I don't want to commit to a wall charger yet, so I was gonna have a NEMA 14-50 plug put in to use with the Mobile Connecter the car will come with at Level 2. Some channels recommend getting an industrial outlet to prevent wear, but the bigger thing is that my house will probably need an electrical box upgrade, too.
>>
>>28968524
>implying that all home owners only buy new
They buy new more often than non home owners do, by a very large margin. But the bigger problem is excluding the non home owner demographic entirely. EVs are an awful decision for them, if you can't charge it at home it's like buying a gas guzzler that is enormously more inconvenient to use. Price per mile when charging off public chargers is similar to a low MPG SUV, it's rough.

If 90+% of used car buyers can't actually benefit from buying EVs then yeah, used EV prices are going to suffer immensely as a result.

How much do you guys actually spend (per mile or per full-charge)?
Some of the public charging stations here do around 50 cents per kWh. Teslafags tell me that's like $50 for a full fast-charge, so same as putting 10 gallons in my shitbox every 2 weeks.
Living in an apartment so I would have to public charge, or steal from random outlets.
>>
>>28982992

>>
>>28994507

>>
>>28994741
Slower charging, more prone to failure, less quality materials, will rust, no buttons, Tesla will sell your info to the feds, lagging behind the more premium EVs in range too.

By the way, Tesla sells their cars with zero buffer on the battery, meaning their cars degrade harder in range than the competition.
>>
>>28994641
The EX30 is a real steal right now. I don't like crossovers so I'll never buy one but in the realm of EV crossovers, the EX30 is without a doubt the best buy. There is no other alternative that offers RWD drive with powerful electric motors and an Android/Google OS with zero bullshit.

This would almost be amazing but it has rather slow charging and no buttons on the interior. I want AWD because I do a lot of camping in remote areas, but I'm not gonna buy a car with a tablet and nothing else.

There was also something fishy going on with its range figures. It has 1 kwh less than the bolt EUV. Also has worse MPGe supposedly in both city and highway, and yet it gets a range figure that is somehow better than the EUV. In real world testing from car and driver the EX30 got 83 MPGe and the Bolt EUV got 99 MPGe, which makes sense considering the EX30 has over twice the horsepower. So basically the range figures for this car are a lie. You can expect to get less range and less efficiency than the EUV. Combine that with charging that is barely any faster and this is a rather pathetic road trip vehicle.

Something like an Ioniq 5 mogs it and also has considerably more room and are far cheaper used. Only problem with the Ioniq 5 are the horrendous ground clearance and approach/departure angles. It's even worse for going off road. Sadly there is still no good cheap high clearance AWD or 4x4 EV on the market yet. Gotta wait for the rivians to come down in price. I'm banking on the R2 being the next car I buy used in like 5-6 years from now.

The Polestar 2 is a great EV. If you're not leasing new, get atleast 2024 model with RWD. It's day and night compared to the old FWD ones. Honestly drives better than the AWD drive too. This car is built very old school. It feels like being in a proper car, not just iPhones on wheels. And the liftback trunk makes it way more practical than Model 3.

I am rather excited for the BMW i3 or rather what comes out after it. I would like to see an i4 style (or at least the hatch) come to the new platform. Either that or see what the eventual i5 upgrade looks like.

I've been thinking about an mk7 e-golf as my daily driver, they promised ranges between 80 to 170km depending on where it's driven.
How badly have the batteries in these deteriorated during the past decade or so?
I know nissan leafs of similar vintage, 2014 to 16, are pretty much all fucked and can barely do 40km with a full charge on a good day.
My daily commute is approximately 50km total.

Yeah bad news for Polestar and Americans alike. The P2 is the best EV you can get that still feels like a "traditional" car and not a UFO with wheels. I think the ban will be short lived, since they didn't ban Volvo which has the same Chinese owners.
>>

Doubt they have degraded as badly as the Leafs. Maybe you can ask for an external battery test? It should be fine for your commute regardless.

Enjoy. It's a a car that can be had for a bargain if you also opt for the zero interest option. Especially with government subsidies to factor in. I don't like Tesla for their touch screen shit but the Model Y Standard is unbeatable value right now. Remember to always charge that LFP battery to 100%. It's indestructible.
>>
>>28998490
Thanks. Yeah I can understand why some people might not like it. But as you say, I get a 0% interest loan for 5 years and a government subsidy on around 6660 USD. It's pretty much unbeatable and with homecharging it will hardly cost me anything to charge it.

there's no /hvg/ so I guess this is relevant enough?

I drive very little on a day to day basis, but a couple of times a month I need to go either ~250mi or ~700mi

my last vehicle (an 88 nissan pickup) has finally given up the ghost, and with gas proces and political winds being what they are, I am seriously considering a hybrid as my next vehicle - though not a plug-in since I am an apartment dweller

ideally I would like to get a minivan for the cargo space but hybrid minivans are fucking expensive, so a reasonably sized crossover is more likely to be a viable option

I don't really care about appearance, I just want something that works and will continue to work with nothing but basic routine maintenance

I have found a few different decent sounding deals on low mileage recent-year "Kia Niro" vehicles in the area, and wanted a gutcheck on whether they're actual junk that will fall apart or just inexpensive/affordable

not a car guy, if it wasn't obvious
>>
/o/ will need accept EV’s sooner or later
>>
>>28999867
I owned a Kia Niro 2019 PHEV. Very capable car given its relatively low price point. However the engine is weak as shit and driving feels very floaty and there is a ton of road noise on the highway. I sold it after a year but the year I owned it, it was cheap as fuck with low insurance costs and little depreciation.

So buy if you value economy, skip if you value the joy of driving.

If I can't charge an electric car with a built in solar panel I don't want. Why aren't bonnet, roof, and decklid solar panels standard on EVs for passive charging?
>>
>>29000107
Because the benefit of added charge when it's sunny is greatly outweighed by a flimsy and expensive chassi that needs a $10k repair for the smallest rock dent. It's a stupid and ineffective idea.

I'm curious out of how many people who criticize the off road range of EVs have first hand experience off roading with them. I'm guessing very few.

I genuinely want to know, If I took a fully charged Rivian out to oceano dunes, how long could I spend out there before needing to recharge? One hour ? Two hours? More? I'd use half a tank of fuel in my JK Wrangler after a day of off roading.

The leafs do seem like absolute shitheaps, at least when the battery is concerned. Probably why you can get them for like a grand or two nowadays when the range is like 20km on a good day.

I'm still contemplating an EV as my daily driver, yet everyone I discuss it with just goes YEAH BUT MUH RANGE YOU CAN'T DRIVE IT ACROSS THE COUNTRY TO YOUR SUMMER VILLA WHILE TOWING A BOAT PLUS ELECTRIC CARS ARE GAY.
Sure rhing jimbo, your Kia semen cuckbox with a 1 litre 3 cylinder is such a manly car compared to my V12 BMW.
I just want an el cheapo EV to get me to work, the store and back home, I have like 7 other proper cars with real engines for cruising around.
>>
>>29002014
I'd look into Hyundai Ioniq. Very cheap, reliable and seemingly a very durable battery. It's also a sedan and not a gay cuckbox.
>>
>>29002063
Cheapest one is 10 grand, no fucking way man.
My budget is 5 grand tops.
>Just stop being a poorfag
It's not because of that, it's due to autism and principle.
For 10 grand I'd get some fucked yank barge like a 70s muscle car.
Yes, I know it's not a sensible daily, but the issue is that if my budget allows ne to buy something fun instead of practical and sensible, I will always pick the fun option and then complain that gas is expensive and I don't have a daily driver.
I am not a smart man, that's why I gave the EV budget for my wife to manage specifically so I don't do something dumb with it.
>>
>>29002066
5 grand is very tough budget and will mostly only get you shitheaps like Gen 1 Leafs and early Renault Zoes. Works for some people as secondary cars sure, but very limited vehicles in most aspects. An investment of 10k gets you exponentially more car and one that is likely easier to resell too.

Even better, they're 25% MSRP after 8 years
>>
>>29002069
I know, that's why I've been eyeballing the VW eUp and egolf because they tend to hover around the 5 to 7 grand range for a 10 year or so old model and they seemed to offer fairly good range when new, like 160km/100 miles so even if it lost some range to the 100km/60 mile range, I wouldn't be too bothered.
Yet even at these prices I am extremely tempted to buy something dumb that realistically I do not need.
>>
>>29001088
>>29002074
There's so much less risk with buying a used EV since you can't really abuse an electric motor and the computers will prevent you from doing anything stupid with the battery. It never made sense to me why there was such a huge gap in price compared to new.

Frankly this car is an insult compared the the Chevy bolt. Before they got rid of the subsidies it was going for like 20k starting. And you get an actual infotainment, power windows, speakers, etc. Now the current one is still considerably cheaper than either of the SUV versions of this. Way more range too and the new one is much faster charging. They should have just not made the SUV versions if they were going to price them this shitty. They should have been around the same as the truck.

Unless you have place to charge EV is no-go in Europe.
Public chargers are super expensive to the point that it costs almost the same as driving smaller gas car.
EU is also after those charging at home and bypassing electro-jew, there are now categories of electricity consumption tuned in such a way that if you charge ev at home you come of the normal consumption bracket and kwh automatically gets 50% more expensive for you.
You can still kinda bypass that with solar panels but I have no doubt they'll just introduce solar tax over time, like measure the area of solar panels on your property and tax you by that.
>>
>>29006464
>Americans have no idea how good you have it.
But it got significantly worse for them too. Like 10-15 years ago everything was so much cheaper than in EU, like watching car related youtube videos - car parts, oils, tools everything was 1/3 or 1/4 the price in EU but these days prices are almost the same.

Low weight is one of the things that makes miata a miata.

That's putting the cart before the horse. The defining characteristic of a Miata is how it drives, and the weight is part of that. Yeah same way our phones are built in China. The Tesla cars built in China are not worse than the ones built elsewhere. In fact, they're better than the ones built in US. For me it's more important that the actual design, engineering, software and service is done by westerners. The assembly being in China or Berlin matters fuck all to me really.

By the way I think the facelifted Polestar 2 won't be built in China. If they're moving it to Volvo's SPA3 platform, they will probably end up building it in one of their SPA3 factories in Europe.

I've an MG3+ hybrid

Good:

Insanely good spec for the money. All around cameras, heated seats, remote heating/AC in a car at £20k?
Suprisingly nimble for the class of car.

Bad:
Visibility is pretty poor out the sides and rear (but you get huge amounts of driver aids to help this)
Completely failed an NCAP test due to the seat coming loose and crushing you against the dashboard (apparently fixed with the recall repair)
MPG isn't outstanding for a hybrid
Niggling bugs and issues (mostly software and UI stuff)
£500 service for a car that has done 10K miles. Nearest dealer is an hour drive away after my local dealer dropped the franchse. The 4th year service is over £1k. Generic service garages don't have the parts.
>>
