I replaced my upper control arms 2-3 years ago. I did my brakes recently and saw the rubber housing around the joints are completely fucked on both sides. The ball joint and arm are integrated so I can't just replace the ball. My question is did I fuck up when I replaced them or is this just a shitty part? Like is there any way I could have installed them that would have caused this rapid degradation of the housing? Maybe they were supposed to be installed under pressure or under no pressure and I did the wrong one causing them to wear out prematurely?
you didn't put a single drop of anything into that zerk fitting did you

>>28970335I replaced some dust boots on my tie rods. Prothane and Energy suspension sell polyurethane dust boots to replace destroyed ones. Normally you would want to replace the whole unit, but if you just did them, it should be fine to just do dust boots. DON'T FORGET TO PACK THEM WITH GREASE
My dad had his usual mechanic install some acdelco tie rods for him on his buick... He drives less than 5k a year with that car. Anyways 3-4 years later im checking his suspension during a tire change and he needs tie rod ends. Look at the tie rods, and they were never greased once even though they took the time to install the zerk. The ball joint was full of rust when i peeled the boot back. Good thing i know how to wrench on cars now but wtf. And my dad had been going to them for over a two decades at that point. Makes me wonder what other shortcuts they took over those years on my familys cars... For you wrenchlets out there, always request your balljoints get greased anytime you bring your car in for a service.
>>28970339I double checked the part on rockauto and they are pre-greased. But to answer your question no I never greased them myself and I didn't know what timeline greasing was on (miles, years etc). If that was the cause then yea I fucked it up. I'm going to go ahead and replace both uppers again and even though the part I'm getting is also pre greased I'll throw some more in there. I assume there is a special type of ball joint grease I need? >>28970495I'm going to do the whole unit. I assume ball joints take a lot more stress over tie rods so I'm just gonna be safe.
>>28970339xDnailed it.
>>28970529>so I'm just gonna be safe.couldn't hurt
Never forget. These are the "people" chirping online about the absolute superiority of their dublwishies. "yeah man, i replaced the upper control arms and the car handles so much better now! you can really feel it!" - >>28970335 ProbablyAbsolute Cinema de la Wrenchlet!
>>28970637He literally wrenches you retarded third worlder
>>28970529Lithium grease is the standard grease. If you wanna get fancy, you can buy the ones with moly additives. 3-5% moly is good enough and will still work for pretty much all purposes
>>28970637was he the very same person preaching his belief in the superiority of wishbones?
>>28970335Energy Suspension sells Tie rod and ball joint boots for like $7You can rip off the old boot.Unbolt the spindle and slip on a new boot.
