Are midgates as cool as they seem or just a meme?
>>28971493being an automotive designer in the year 2026 must be so cool. you just think up the most insane mentally retarded shit imaginable -- and then it actually gets made.
>>28971494They’ve been a thing since 2002.
>>28971493If I were in the market for an EV truck it would be a great selling point to get a Silverado over a Lightning, even if use it infrequently>>28971494this was literally Bob Lutz at GM in the mid 00s
>>28971493They're a complete meme. A lot of guys will jump through moronic hoops to exclaim how cool and useful it is and then just simply never use it. It wasn't a hot thing in 2002 when Chevy did it, it wasn't a hot thing in the 60s I think when Ford did it, it wasn't a hot thing in the 80s when Toyota did it. Its added complexity, cost, and ingress that few people even want. How often are you hauling a kayak in your pickup that you're willing to drop the back seats and having all that road noise while driving? Great, now you have lake and river goo in your vehicle and its being aerated by the turbulent wind!
>>28971575It'd be nice if this retard could gold its, back seats down to extend the bed length from 4.5' to 8'.
>>28971595this is so retarded.
>>28971595$36,000 truck is now a $40,000 truck with a fold down midgate just for hippies who take their kayak out but simply refuse to put it on the roof or use an extension tool like pic related. Oh wow, why isn't that a big selling option?
>>28971600I'd like to put a kayak on the roof of a Maverick and 7'+ bass rods in the bed with the back seat folded down but it has no rails to mount a rack or a way to extend the bed into the cabin. Being able to convert from a 4 seater 4.5' bed to a two seater 8' bed truck by folding the back seats down would be super useful and none of the hassle of the GM midgate puzzle that required removing the rear window and was rarely used. With the Baja it was no different than folding the back seat down in a wagon to extend the cargo area. The Baja is just a hacked up Outback afterall and the fact that the Maverick can't do this is mind blowing. Ford was rumored to be developing mid gate for a new conpact truck and is developing some gay ev based on the maverick with chinkshit ev parts so maybe this time they will get it right.
>>28971493Midgets were never cool
>>28971612I don't even know what you're arguing for anymore. You want a complicated and expensive midgate to get an extra <2 feet of cargo length, at which you still have the same problem of the kayak still mostly overhanging the rear of the tailgate. >The Baja is just a hacked up Outback afterall and the fact that the Maverick can't do this is mind blowing. Again, the only thing mind blowing is you thinking they sold in meaningful numbers. OEMs are fully aware of this car feature, they're also aware of how expensive it is and how few people actually want it. Instead of making an expensive option basically nobody wants, they'll tell you to get a slightly bigger truck like a Ranger, or F150. Carrying canoes and kayaks without a truck or a midgate isn't a new concept, if you're struggling to haul a kayak with your Maverick, you have a severe skill issue.
>>28971496and nonetheless still gay af., what are you even doing, unc????
>>28971496>they've got the bed all opened up
Its an awesome concept and a prime example of an answer to a question that nobody asked.Use case is some random event where "we can just fold down the mid gate to make it fit".
pickup trucks are incel indicators
>>28971641Turning a 5 foot bed with the tailgate closed into a 7 foot bed whenever its convinent? I would love if my maverick did this. The amount of times i'm like a foot short and have to use ratchet straps instead of just closing the tailgate like this would have saved my ass.
>>28971657>The amount of times i'm like a foot short and have to use ratchet straps instead of just closing the tailgate like this would have saved my ass.Can you give a specific example where a 7' bed would be advantageous with a many-thousand dollar option?
>>28971655this is the dumbest thing i've read on this board in quite a while.
>>28971622I dont have a Maverick. I haul mine on my car, in my car with the tailgate folded down or in my truck bed. The fishing rods go on my cars head liner rod rack and or they get stuffed into the 4 door truck cabin diagonally from rear driver's side seat to front passager seat. I don't have a Maverick because it csnt even do what my 23 year old tiny ass honda can do. >have a rook rake for a kayak >put an 11.5' kayak in the back cargo area with less than 4 feet overhanging the rear>transport up to 8" one piece fishing rod rods >sleep in the vehicle by laying flat on the floor with 6' of enclosed flat space If the Maverick had roof rails and a back seat that folded down to extend the bed it could do all those things.
>>28972004>If the Maverick had roof railsYou can stop there. I don't care about all your BDSM gear you transport. Mavericks can have roof racks installed. If you have a roof rack, why would you also want a mid gate? Why not just put your extra long dildos on the roof rack next to the sybian?
>>28972004Inb4 people are confused about my cars tailgate. Elements have tailgates and the floor is flat. You can fold the back seats up and to the side or remove them and make it a two seater autistic van like I did. https://youtu.be/UVfm1qIWMxE?si=8yK8bhuyppVSVCq0
>>28972010They dont have rails. You have to get some cheap ones that clamp onto the rail rails. Those always loosen and are shit. They're for short term use only. You enter a car with proper rails or bolt on mounts for a rack. Since the roof is tucked and has no tails the only real kayak rack option for them is a bed mount rack which is what you'll see them with irl. My fishing rods and rells are worth more than your life. They get transported inside the vehicle or they dont go.
>>28972022>rail rails.Rain rails
>>28972022>They dont have rails.Read it again. You can have a roof rack installed. Are you saying because every model doesn't come with a roof rack means one simply cannot be installed?
>>28972024I'm only aware of the clamp on racks and those are a disaster for long term use.
>>28972027The cheap rails are clamp-on in the rain gutter to avoid permanently modifying the vehicle, they do make bolt-on racks but most DIY people aren't buying a $35,000 truck to then put a $2000 roof rack so they can haul their $300 kayak and your $100 fishing rods. I've seen contractors load up mavericks with garage doors, ladders, and other building supplies. You're playing some semantics of not knowing how aftermarket roof racks work, then stipulating some autistic thing about 1 component completely devoid of a midgate or a roof rack to justify a vehicle. Seems like you're being dishonest, anon.
>>28972030OK Maverick Defense Force. Ferd failed to out design a 20 year old Subaru Outback with the back cut off. That or they aren't allowed to have this feature in current year for gay occupant hazard reasons and is why only EVs will have it.
>>28971670>Can you give a specific example where a 7' bed would be advantageous with a many-thousand dollar option? When you need to move something thats 6 feet and you want to just put the tailgate up Instead of dicking around with ratchet straps? When you want to move something thats 7 feet long and not have it stick past the tailgate?I moved some drip edges and had to stick them through the rear window and strap them to the tailgate so they wouldnt stick too far out. This would have enabled me to not have to stick them through the rear window.I also have a kayak that has to stick out a couple feet past the tailgate. This would solve that.I also moved some 8 feet 2x4s and 4x4s, I had to stick them 3.5 feet past the tailgate. This would make that significantly better.
Also having to drill holes in yout room to mount a proper roof rack is fucking gay. Just give it some damn roof rails.
>>28972040>Ferd failed to out design a 20 year old Subaru Outback with the back cut off.No, they failed to include a feature nobody but you wants. Perhaps you can buy another 22 year old subaru and show off just how much you love your subaru
>>28971612>baja>>28971622>clubmanexcellent taste all around
>>28972042Since you're carrying 8' long shit so often, have you ever considered an 8' long bed?
>>28972053CCLB doesn't fit in a garage while an avalanche gives you a crew cab and a long bed (just not at the same time).
maverick owners are some of the weirdest people on this board. they're on here every day constantly trying to convince everyone how useful and awesome they are. i never see anyone with half tons doing this. or any other car for that matter. i think they're just desperately trying to convince themselves.
>>28972062This. They're like the Jehovah's Witnesses of /o/.
>>28972053No i havent because it makes 0 sense to daily a full size f150 with an 8 foot bed to move something once a month. I get 6l/100km with this thing, its easy to park and doesnt drive like shit. If ford just added this feature, I'd get the benefit of a longer bed with a smaller vehicle like >>28972056 said. Its really not that complicated and im not sure why you're having a hard time understanding why having the option to have a longer bed is a bad thing. Its literally the same as just being able to fold the seats down in an suv.
>>28972062Maybe next they get shit on constantly by people who don't own one yet assume it must be useless and have their feelings hurt by something that isn't muh REAL TRUGG being able to do some actual work.
>>28972072Because, even, not next.
>>28972072aw your little feelings get hurt lmao yeah you're a maverick owner alright
>>28972083Amazing argument anon, must have taken significant brain power coming up with literally just what I already said.
Kek reading about this on a maverick forum. Everyone thinks its mind blowing amd wants it and anyone who had a baja raves about it and wished their maverick had one like the baja. Former avalanche owners seethe about it and complain about how the window leaked and was shit on their GM trash. Imagine hating nice features because your experience was ruined by GM.
>>28971657Even with the tailgate down its nice to be able to haul a long load without a retarded extender like >>28971595. I went on vacation for a week to a lake town with a kayak in the bed on a 5'5" bed truck and it was annoying having to find places to park where I could back in and overhang the 6 feet of kayak sticking out past the bed sides. If I could have magically folded the back seat down and shoved it 3 feet further in then that would have been awesome. Wouldn't need a red flag on it either to appease the road jannies.
>>28972071>No i havent because it makes 0 sense to daily a full size f150 with an 8 foot bed to move something once a month.Have you considered an 8' flatbed utility trailer?
>>28971657>I would love if my maverick did this.Maverick rear seats don't even fold down flat as they are today. Plus audio equipment bolted to the rear bulkhead wall. Realistically it'd be a 2-2.5 foot ingress if it had a midgate. Lets pretend you got a full 3 foot of ingress, great, you still have 3 feet of boat sticking out behind your truck, you'd still need that special empty parking space. >>28972094>Imagine hating nice features because your experience was ruined by GM.They also fucked up that GMC Envoy? The one with the retractable SUV bed and midgate? I think that was just an Avalanche with a (partially) removable cargo area. Apparently it was some preposterously expensive option package, broke frequently, and known to leak right off the assembly line.
>>28972129>Maverick rear seats don't even fold down flat as they are today. Plus audio equipment bolted to the rear bulkhead wall.Yeah it would have to have been designed in from day one. The UEV platform truck will probably have this and we wont see it on a Maverick until there is generational platform change if there ever is one.
>>28971493They're retarded as fuck. Why the fuck would you want a giant open hole in your interior as you go 90mph down the highway? Why would you want to drive around like that when it's -40? If you want a long covered cargo area buy a Suburban or put a canopy on a long bed pickup.
>>28972258That's the best part, you can close it when you know you're going to go 90 on the highway. If you have it open to carry big shit you probably shouldn't be going 90 anyway.
>>28972183This begins the bloat. $30k truck turns into $35, then a midgate added, then they add a v6, then they add a long bed, then people notice it costs as much as an f150 with half the capability still, then Ford cancels it due to sluggish sales. Oh boy!
>>28972264>If you have it open to carry big shit you probably shouldn't be going 90 anyway.Except it's perfectly safe to do in a Suburban. So why would a midgate exist if it just makes the vehicle dangerous?
>>28972267But then you can't carry shit that doesn't fit in a suburban that you might need a truck bed for like say, a fridge. That's the point, it does multiple configurations in one truck. I don't know why this is so difficult to understand for you.
>>28972268If you know you might be carrying tall shit then go the pickup and canopy route. That's also capable of multiple configurations. You also can't carry tall and long shit with a midgate either. I don't know why you don't understand why the midgate doesn't make any sense.
>>28972275Why is it conceptually difficult for you to understand that people dont want to daily a pickup truck to move shit once a month. Like it makes no fucking sense. Id rather take a smaller bed and deal with a slight inconvienence once a month than deal with a giant inconvienence every single day. >inb4 how are pickups an inconvience
>>28972310Why is this place so into creating solutions to problems that don't exist? People obviously want to be """inconvenienced" by pickup trucks if they buy 3 million of them every year. You can have a pickup truck with any sized bed you want or you can just buy a SUV. Who is asking for this midgate shit?
>>28971648hhhehehehhe
