Guys, after six months of my car being in and out of repair shops it is finally repaired to the point of not showing any warn lights. Turns out I still have to change my cats probably, I was thinking of either buy aftermarket with 200 cells or doing the conversion in the original damaged ones to 200 cells, what do you guys think? The journey so far:-liftoff oversteer with old, worn out, damaged inappropriate tyres, damaged the rear end-replaced exhaust rear ends-lost the exhaust tip on the highway-blew a rear tyre driving 230 km/h, thank God didnt crash-bought michelin tyres, Pagid and Brembo sport breaks-both cats said goodbye (ceramic is loose)-replaced the oil separator, starting motor, spark plugs Now comes the question whether it is worth doing the IMS Bearing replacement in a 996 3.6 2003 which has already 180.000km on the tacho.
Sounds like you need to swap out the shitty plane engine for a good engine.
>>28975686Eh. It's not a garage queen, which are most often affected by the whole IMS bearing thing, so it's something I'd honestly just leave alone until it needs a clutch. It's more likely to die from bore scoring than from IMS bearing failure, so make sure your injectors aren't leaking and religiously check the oil for forbidden glitter.
Did you put some ill fitting aftermarket rice bumper on after you crashed?yikes
>>28975693>>28975694The IMS change would cost 1000€ at least and if you consider the costs of a motor, which is about 10000€, you'd need a likelihood of more than 10% of IMS failure causing the motor to die in order for the replacement to be worth it. Then, there are other possible causes for motors dying, as you say. I guess im gonna gamble it and in the worst case I could consider a new (and perhaps more powerful) engineI will check into this bore scoring stuff.>>28975707Im half ashamed to admit it, but yes. it is though not rice and most people dont even realize the change or that it is not that well fitting.I really like the car, but I aim for other carreras in the future
>>28975686could have had a turbo 350z instead of fooling with this rental piece of shit kek
>>28975686this is hilarious. i've done more work on my 986 (which has pretty much the same engine) in half that time, by myself, for probably half as much in parts.kek fucking wrenchletit's an 03, you don't need to do IMS, only 1999 and earlier were effected
>>28975862>my 986
>>28975686I would if it was me. But I would wait for the clutch / put in a lighter weight clutch. The 996 is a difficult piece of kit because it sucks from the factory. For me, were I to buy one, the goal would be to make it either a TURBO with a C2 engine or a GT3 with a C2 engine which would be based. This talk of climbing the 911 ladder is gay. You bought a 996 just commit to it for 300k miles>IMS check the engine bay and door sill for a sticker and see if someone already did it. If not I would do it. It probably won’t fail at this point but the reality is that they still are failing all the time. I see them at my local Porsche every year. >bore scoring. This process is inevitable and happens because the fuel injectors leak and fuel is a bad lubricant. If the car sits for a long time the fuel will fill the cylinder and the engine will then start and have no lubrication. This is just a matter of driving it everyday to delay. >waterpump Next you need to fix the SHIT build. >replace the GM steering wheel with a MoMo. >replace the seats with a sparco folding so you can still reach the back >add a harness > C2 suspension is meh. Turbo set up is soft and comfortable and stable. GT3 is tight rough and doesn’t understeer at the level of the C2. Choose one and swap out the old dampers and control arms. You can go for Ohlins and have both if you wish. >rear sway bars are soft and understeers on a C2. Go for the GT3 or Turbo depending on your use.>PCM Classic and get rid of the gross round 90s bs. >defog and polish and seal the headlamps and taillights. Goes a long way to making the car look great and like it was built this decade. >claybar and pro touch up the paint and then do the pro ceramic. Will look brand new. >LSD of your choice. The Porsche ones suck so go aftermarket. I like the wavetrac which rotates the best and help the Turbos suspension geometry. The Guiken is the GT3 like. This would be a kino 911 with SOVL. And cooler than most 922 C2s
>>28976006Personally I like the Turbo philosophy which is comfort max and still going fast where the GT3 is pure track at the cost of being less good on the street. Granted you won’t have the turbo power to make up for the handling compromises you’ll see find that turbo philosophy adds mechanical grip and comfort vs the middle man C2 / C2S.
Based. Now get a 992
>>28975686I have a high milage lapis blue 996 tooI'd wait until you need a clutch service to do the IMS - if it made it this long it's likely not going to be your engine's downfall. same with bore scoring - it's just a lottery from the foundry process.keep an eye on 'cam deviation' (chain pad wear) tho using a durametric/etc.change the water pump every five years proactivelyget your injectors tested/replaced
>>28975686Are Porsche fags delusional? What kind of retards buy something like that.So many issues.
>>28976386Dude thinks he's enjoying premium motoring with some McDonald's strutted shitbox equipped with a gutless and impossible to work on v6 mated to a slushbox with gears so long that it seems like it's a 3speed.
>>28976008>Granted you won’t have the turbo power to make up for the handling compromises you’ll see find that turbo philosophy adds mechanical grip and comfortDumbass word salad POORsche ricer lol
>>28975795>but I aim for other carreras in the futureYea this is not a long term car, even when it was new
>>28976594Stupid ass ///Mexican 5 Pedrotition
>>28976914Kill yourself you larping word salad ricer, wrenchlet
>>28975686>-liftoff oversteer with old, worn out, damaged inappropriate tyres, damaged the rear endAKA "I should be in a fwd econobox not a RR sports car"
>>28977166Kill YOURSELF with your mushy bilstein grandma edition and muttified M5
I considered a 996 but was too afraid I’d end up with something plagued with expensive issues. I ended up getting a BRZ instead as a compliment to my g87
>>28977475That’s really gay lol
>>28977478Yes, and?
>>28977454The fuck are you smoking retard?
Aren't you the idiot who backed over a rock?
>>28977475a BRZ will depreciate to zerobuy a cheap 996 6spd coupe, treat it like a beater, and it will appreciate enough to cover basic maintenance over a few years of ownership.even it if blows up, you can resleeve + stroke it for $15-20k and get nearly all of that back when selling.as a worst case scenario, blown up 996s still sell for $8k+ - meaning a $10k avg loss. Still far less than overall depreciation on a normie car.
>>28977570With all due respect, I could not care less about the value or depreciation of a car that I intend to drive. I certainly haven’t sworn off a 996, but I also plan to own an example of a 911 some day. It could be an 996 or maybe something from a different generation.
