Are ARP head studs worth it?
>>
>>28980293
as opposed to paying nearly the same for factory torque yield bolts?
yes
>>
>>28980293
no way those niggas are like $400 compared to $50 for the stock torque to yield bolts which are good for 20 psi
Fuck that I'd rather just stick to 20 psi and spend money making the engine rev higher if I feel the need for more power
>>
>>28980307
In my case, ARP are 5-6 times more than stock TTY bolts. I'm not boosting the car or anything, but it's an amateur motorsport shitbox for beating and it already has a blown headgasket.
>>
>>28980317
stock N/A cars don't just blow headgaskets without you doing something wrong
(excluding cars from the asbestos ban age)
In your case ARP Head bolts are a poor solution to a problem which shouldn't exist
>>
>>28980293
>head studs
Once the rust sets in, that head is stuck to the block forever.
>>
>>28980322
>stock N/A cars don't just blow headgaskets without you doing something wrong
lol
>>
>>28980324
>rust in the cylinder head, where there is oil flowing everywhere
>>
>>28980325
It's true I was too busy thinking about the other exceptions I forgot about that particular exception
>>
>>28980324
You got some gay negroided engine with coolant passages through the head bolt holes or something?
>>
>>28980322
I know D series engines are known for head gasket failures because of both insufficient clamping force from the factory bolts and weak gasket design. Doesn't help that both the black and head are aluminum which warps under the slightest overheating.
>>
>>28980328
There is no oil flowing in the head stud thread dumbass, try putting a stainless steel stud in an aluminium head cylinder dumbass and you will see what happens
>>
>>28980349
Depends on the engine design. I've seen head studs holes that have oil holes in them. I think most VTEC heads do this.
>>
>>28980349
uhhhhhh so don't use stainless steel head studs in an aluminium BLOCK* lmao
(they don't)
>>
>>28980360
keep moving those posts dumbass
and it's not a block if you only have one dumbass
keep being dumb I guess
>>
>>28980367
>YOUR STUDS WILL RUST!!!
No they won't
>oh yeah well what if you used (material combination that's known for galling, which nobody uses, because it's known for galling) THEN IT WILL GALL!!!!!

Uhhhh.... WHO's moving the goalpost here?
Are the studs rusting or are they galling buddy?
>>
>>28980372
>your studs will not rust!
they do
>oh yeah well what if you don't use (material combination that's known for rusting)
so they do rust dumbass (ur statemet was wrong and dumb), not galling that's different
>>
>>28980293
Only if you're increasing boost or compression way over stock values. Otherwise it's a waste of money.
>>
>>28980382
Depends, I studded mine because the ARP head stud kit was cheaper than new OEM head bolts were
>>
>>28980378
Leaving your retardation about stainless stud galling aside, by what mechanism does the rust propagate?
What happens to the back oxide coating? Where does it go?
Where does the grease go and how does it get replaced with moisture?
>>
Just put anti seize on the studs before you set them, that's how you prevent the drawbacks of them rusting in the block.

If you plan to build the car up, get studs. If it's just a stock car getting repaired then just run oem bolts. I'd never put studs in a ES300 for example
>>
>>28980308
>torque to yield bolts
If youre fixing a blown head gasket on your shitbox then fine, use that factory garbage.
ARP fasteners are intended to be used many times over. Youre not using TTY trash in the pits or on vintage.

And if that eBay price seems reeaalllyyy good, its because theyre chinesium fakes.
>>
>>28980385
ARP studs come with the lubricant shown in the OP pic, most applications want it on both ends of the stud.
>>
>>28980293
If I’m taking off the head for any reason studs are going back in.
>>
>>28980387
You can use Torque to yield bolts many times over, it's only if they don't torque up to specs any more that you have to replace them.
$50 is for the standard Auto Parts supplier replacement bolts, not Ebay junk, OEM bolts are $130.
>>
>>28980384
i don't know, but it happened after a couple of days
>>
>>28980383
>ARP head stud kit was cheaper than new OEM head bolts
what the fuck are you driving?
>>
>>28980403
>i don't know

Yes you don't seem to know much
>>
>>28980405
I know enough to know that it can rust and there is not an oil pump blasting the stud thread as you said dumbass
>>
>>28980404
NB Miata. New OEM bolts are $20 a pop (needs 10) and the ARP stud kit was $160.
>>28980407
That's one of the reasons the studs come with grease for the threads. It's not the kit's fault you didn't read the directions.
>>
>>28980293
Are high quality USA made bolts a meme?
No.
Studs make removing heads a bit of a pain though.
Some cars don't have room to remove the head with the studs installed.

>>28980372
I have stainless ARP head bolts on my LS2.
Heads have been removed multiple times.
No gauling, no issues.
>>
>>28980402
>You can use Torque to yield bolts many times over,
....said zero manufacturers ever.
>>
>>28980552
Toyota does, you're supposed to measure them after reusing and I think they suggested only to torque them 3 times in total, with factory torquing being the first time.
>>
>>28980454
It's not just the threads, rust will form along the entire shaft, locking the head on for good.
>>
I know Sloppy Mechanics re-uses TTY head bolts and makes 900+ hp. But his junk isn't expected to go another 200k either.
>>
Worth it? Is $150-$250 worth the highest quality re-usable head studs in the world? $150 is the cost of putting LED bulbs in your head lights and tail lights. Yes, they are worth it.

Are they worth it for your nissan versa note, probably not

Despite all the "gotcha" posting itt, corroded head studs locking a head to a block is a well known thing, particularly among British cars as they used head studs the most but is not exclusive to them.

>muh coolant leaks do it!
picrel is of an air-cooled VW Beetle engine
>>
>>28980685
Oem studs aren't made with stainless. They're made with carbon based steel which is how that happens.
>>
>>28980685
Cadillac NorthStar had this problem
>>
>>28980325
Who is still putting single layer head gaskets back in?
>>
>>28980692
The studs OP is asking about aren't stainless either.
>>
>>28980734
The ones pictured are chromoly, which is still better than mild steel, but they offer stainless and more.
>>
>>28980322
Toyota engines across multiple generations would like to have a word with you
>>
>>28980293
They're worth it on those 6.0 pieces of shit ford made.

>said the manufacturer with the best reputation for reliability on their car most known for low maintenance reliability
ftfy

They don't even tell you to replace the set when one stops torquing up - just replace that one single bolt.
>>
>>28980685
look at the absolute state of that entire engine you retard
>If you put ARP studs on your engine AND THEN LEAVE IT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN FOR 10 YEARS they might rust the head on!
>>
>>28980772
>(excluding cars from the asbestos ban age)
>>
>>28980772
The coolant turns acidic. Need to swap it out at 80k.
