It's time for me to replace my DD, after 8 years. With gas prices being what they are, petrol or even diesel isn't an option anymore (and being an yuropean, we are taxed to hell anyway). Because the wife was raving about "how cool they are" today I booked a test drive with a Tesla Model 3 RWD long range. Never even sat in one before. I was prepared to hate it... And I loved it.

The instant power was amazing to experience, and the silence is perfect for a DD. I drove it for 30 min with several full throttle pulls, and lost 4% battery. Also only touched the brakes once or twice during the entire drive.

Everything you touch feels nice and solid, and nicely, and the interior is roomy even in the back . Everything being on the screen was my biggest worry, but all major controls are directly accessible and the rest you can fiddle with while the car drives itself. A few thing are legit stupid like the drive select and the glovebox, but it's not the end of the world. My only gripe is the lack of a hatch, it would be so much more practical.

Don't care, I'm buying a car, not dating the guy. Ford and Porsche were no better, and people have no complaints about the brands.

I'm legit charmed by this car; not on an emotional level but more like "I need a tool, and this one ticks all the boxes". I see myself getting driven to work while the ventilated seat cools my ass and the really good stereo blasts some bass. And most of all, reducing my operating costs by almost 10x. What can I do to get this idea out of my head ?

If it matches what you need, go get it.

But first, calculate on a spreadsheet on the Total Cost of Ownership for your current car and the electric car.

A lot of people make the mistake that if they save money on gas, they save money on the car, without factoring in that a new car has a car payment, higher registration (or maybe not in your nation), higher insurance, variable maintenance costs, etc.

Take a whole picture approach rather than just eMPG alone. Now, cars are mostly emotional purchases for most people, so take that into account too. Is it worth paying money to have this, or is your life energy better spent elsewhere?

Not yet, but expect that to change as China is implementing laws to force real door handles and buttons into cars. Who would've expected that? Even the EU is doing something similar. Anyways I'm sure American cars will still get increasingly more touchscreen stuff. Steering wheels will probably be replaced by touch controls next.
