Timing belt is loose, pulley or other belt gave way on freeway. Towed to parking lot in bumfuck nowhere. 520km from home, getting a bus home tonight. The car cost 3300 AUD 6 years and is interference design, I think it's likely no internal damaged was suffered since shut off was immediate, but not 100%Would you:A) Repair with a timing belt kit in parking lot, about 300-400 AUD + 6 hour bus ride back to car after getting it after who knows how longB) Tow it home for $1479 AUD, then try to repair at home C) Try to sell to wreckers, wreckers still a fair bit away potentially no takers D) Donate to SES who'll take it for demonstrations to chop it up for rescue training etc
>>28986128>interference design>shut off was immediate>no damageHope in one hand.... She's fucked m8. Is it really $1500 for a tow? Fucking hell. Sign up for a roadside assistance service like the equivalent CAA or AMA. The ~$100/yr covers a ~350km tow and they give you a discounted /km rate after that.
>>28986128Hold on, you need to give more information anon... Shut off was immediate but with like a bang? Timing belt is loose but intact? The drive belt or drive pulley is thrown? If it was me I'd eat the 300-400 for a kit and have a crack, and bring a swag/car sleeping kit or something in case it doesn't work out in the carpark. If it's still fucked, wreck it then and there. Towing a hunk of shit home that has had the piston and valve coexist spatially is a massive waste of money. Did you try and turn it over by hand? Do you have any prior experience?
What car is it
>>28986361I hope not Audi with 40v
>>28986361I'm guessing BMW M20
>>28986128What sort of car is it? Answer will depend on knowing what we're talking about.
I've been trying to post it I keep getting temporarily blocked messages >>28986151I got a tow into town, with basic coverage>>28986339No bang, just shut off as if it was stalled (automatic tho) travelling at 110km/hr, so I suspect it's just the pulleys and belts, but there's no way to be sure. Timing belt is loose but intact. There was squealing for a while actually, belt squeal, however I honestly thought "oh great, I need to do the alternator belt" and thought it'd be fine, I'll just go by ACT, stop at Bunnings get a cheap socket wrench kit, adjust tension, if not get belt at Repco and change etc. one of the other belts must be chewed up or plastic. Inside chewed from something, some metal shavings, so one of the pulleys must be fucked, tho a kit has everything. The plastic cover was damaged for years because the harmonic balancer pulled off the rubber and into the cover and it was hell to get it back out, so it could also have easily been a piece of gravel flew at the right angle and gotten stuck in a pulley or something. The car cost $3300 AUD 6 years ago, towing quote is $1479 to tow from this carpark back to my house, then a kit is another couple hundred. The bus ride is overnight about 6 hours and $65 each way if i tried it. I've never done a timing kit before, I'm assuming I'd have to line up timing somehow then hope for the best.I have no tools to turn it over by hand with me, am on a road trip, 520km away from home, torque wrench and breaker bar is at home. I've changed the harmonic balancer, radiator, and was planning on pulling the valve body out to clean the solenoids, but never got around to it. Was already sleeping in the car on the way up for road trip. But basically it's 6 hours back home city then another hour home, then if I wanna come back it's the same whether I drive or bus back
>>28986404>>28986361Subaru Outback, 322,000km, 2.5i 4 speed auto, so it's mediocre in terms of fast/fun, tho it has the 4.44 LSD in the back so may have wreckage value. I paid 3300 AUD for it 6 years ago, I have off-road/mudtyres on it and like taking it bashing. Considering if I get another to replace it I might get the 3.0 6cyl which will at least be faster, 245hp stock vs like 160 of mine, (and maybe slap a 5 PSI turbo on it)
>>28986339I've learned to do most things by simply trying them, trial and error. Even repainted one side of the car at some point with the cheapest spray gun I could get. But then I'm not sitting at the comfort of my own home if I try to diy it at the parking lot.
>>28986410It's probably a dead idler pulley that's flicked the belt. I'd replace the belt at the remote location. Watch a heap of youtubes first so you'll know exactly what you'll need, I'd conscript a mate with a car to help.
>>28986128parking lot repairs in the open without a shade are not worth it desuits probably fucked anyway mate
>>28986415It's winter here atm
>>28986414Here's what it looks like, I can't take any other parts off as no tools in car with me, bus in about 2 hours https://streamable.com/ucl04i
>>28986422>>28986414Sorry wrong link here's the right onehttps://streamable.com/bxitl3
Try to fix it. Worst case scenario, u cant, best case, dopamine explosion. +U learn stuff. Buy all the tools, u dont want a doble trip.
Have you checked if there's a nearby shop that can do it and how much they quote?
>>28986435Not yet, it's after 10pm will have to check but given the price of a kit online I would guess 1200+ aud
>>28986151A lot of interference engines don't have enough lift for the valves to ever touch the pistons anyway.
Just got home, 6+ hours on bus and uber ride back with lots of crap + beach trolley I had in my car. There was a self serve wreckers nearby that closed down a year ago, I could have gotten a short block for $200-$300 aud there or complete engine for like $400 and would have been willing to cobble something together in my driveway from that if they were still operating.
I'd probably cut my losses personally, but idk what your ability to buy another car is. You're gonna end up spending like 30% the value of the car and you dont even know if it's fucked a valve.I mean really its the distance is the annoying part. It's definitely doable in the parking lot with a timing kit and it needs to be re-timed with blocks or cam gear locks. It's only 2 sockets on most cars. And the only difficult part is the crank pulley.it's legitimately harder to get to the timing belt cover then it is to actually change the timing belt in the case of fwd.
>>28986462That's exactly what interference means. If it doesn't have enough lift to occupy used space of the piston at any point in it's duration then it's not an interference engine.
>>28987019There's a fine line between interference and non-interference. RB engines are all considered interference but at least for the RB20/RB30 with factory cams most of the times if timing belt snaps there won't be any contact between valves and pistons. Can even crank it over endlessly while valves are stuck open and they won't touch (from personal experince kek).
>>28986128if you're in nsw, there is a maximum towing fee, look up the nsw govt page on it as there is a table detailing the charges.
>>28987239Towing was covered to the closest town where it now sits, but the 520km tow bill quote is also interstate. Kind of a pain. >>28987192EJ252, hard shut off was immediate, I don't think the timing went out before it stalled, so I suspect it's fine, but there's no way to easily tell without taking a gamble since it now sits 520km away. I really should have done the timing 50,000km ago instead of thinking about it, then totally forgetting about it until now. Though the cover was also damage so I suspect a piece of gravel could have flicked in an also have been the cause>>28987239
>>28987314You could take the plugs out and look at the valves with a bore scope. I mean, if you have tools and the time, it's definitely doable in a parking lot. Same as a garage minus being comfy.
>>28987319>Take the plugs out2 come out easy, 1 is annoying, 1 is quite difficult to take out, spent quite some time last time I changed the plugs, which involve a lot of finagling to get the bit and extension off the wrench and a roll of magnets to fish it out. I do have a cheap borescope camera around somewhere though. Hmm I need like a flex socket adapter I think
