I'm considering installing a subwoofer in a 2001 Volvo S60 Sedan with the factory stereo (HU-605, the basic audio system without a separate amplifier). I've never used a line output converter or taken a subwoofer signal from the rear speakers before.

My plan is to use a line output converter and tap the signal directly from the rear parcel shelf speakers to the subwoofer amplifier, but a few questions came to mind:
1) If I tap the speaker signal for the line output converter, can the parcel shelf speakers still be used normally?
2) The parcel shelf speakers effectively use the entire trunk as their enclosure. If I install a subwoofer in the trunk, will the pressure generated by the subwoofer push against the parcel shelf speakers from behind and interfere with their movement or sound quality?
3) If it's better to remove the parcel shelf speakers altogether, what happens to the load on the head unit? As far as I understand, they're wired in parallel with the rear door speakers (8 ohms + 8 ohms = a 4-ohm load for the head unit).

Does anyone have experience installing a subwoofer in this particular model? Also, why do people on forums recommend turning the ignition key to position II before disconnecting and reconnecting the battery?

5) The battery is conveniently located in the trunk next to the spare wheel well, so at least I won't have to run long power cables. But where is the best place to connect amplifier's ground? Can I connect it directly to the battery's negative terminal since the battery is right there, or is it better to ground it elsewhere? If so, where would be the best location?

>1) If I tap the speaker signal for the line output converter, can the parcel shelf speakers still be used normally?
yes. also check if your head unit has line out, my ford oem has it.
>2) The parcel shelf speakers effectively use the entire trunk as their enclosure. If I install a subwoofer in the trunk, will the pressure generated by the subwoofer push against the parcel shelf speakers from behind and interfere with their movement or sound quality?
No because there are vents in the trunk which are used to get rid of overpressure when closing doors.

I would keep them, idk what happens if you remove them

Do you think the old S80 sedan with the Yamaha V8 would be any good to drive now?

>But where is the best place to connect amplifier's ground?
I prefer ground directly on battery. Have installed lots of 2 way radios and they all come with cables where both positive and negative goes directly to battery.
But on my car since battery is in the front I hooked subwoofer to trailer 12v since that comes from the factory and is right there in the trunk and used nearest bolt as ground.

Wouldn't it make more sense, to source the original high-end system?
These cars came with rather good audio from the factory(including a sub). The installation should be simple since you're just plugging in better equipment to an already existing wiring(if I recall correctly, these models didn't inherit ford's "budget-middle-high" wiring scheme).

High-end systems came with component speakers in front doors, one part being 8 inch woofers, which are kind of heavy. You know how clueless passengers and probably most drivers tend to instinctively slam doors? Well good luck finding a set with them still working and producing clean sound after 20 years of that.

Kill yourself

Sir I'm swedish

>>28991239

no, i know theres some maintinance thing about the chains or seals behind them. that engine needs to be taken out refurbd and thrown into a 240.
>>
>>28991251
>>28991446

I'm not sure if this ever came with a subwoofer but the high-end speakers had 8" speakers in front and parcel shelf and different door panels than this poverty class model which came with 6.5" speakers. There are no cables ready for subwoofer.

>>28991448

No, you kill yourself.

You don't even have bluetooth and having grand dreams of a subwoofer.
>>
>>28991451
All the more reason
>>
>>28989223
HU-605 doesnt have any kind of line out. if you slap an 850 in there you will have the factory amp connector, there are RCA breakouts available for it, but that wont matter to your sub installation. easiest for you is using an amp that supports high-level input and tap directly to the rear speakers

>brings up bluetooth as an argument for good audio
lol, lmao even
>>
>>28989223
Have you considered an underseat subwoofer when selecting a subwoofer? They are not necessarily a replacement for a dedicated unit, but a good way to enhance a stock sound system with a stock head unit.
>>
Good luck mate,

I have a 2001 S60 T5 and I installed a carplay unit and let some professional hifi audio guy install it just so I could use the original amp since I have the premium amp that came with the HU803.

Also fuck the captcha

We had a T5 AWD, I assume you have the FWD high pressure turbo variant (I assume the torque steer is horrendous, it was not great even on the AWD version)

I thought it was a nice engine, just ok steering, tires didn't fit in the wheelwell in hard cornering and would scrape, comfy seats, it apparently was a lemon and I think it failed electronically on the highway and my parents made the dealer buy it back and I wanna say the dealer or his family at least is a major politician here

I already have two options for a subwoofer. Either a 2x12 Peerless Resolution with a Focus FX-1500D amplifier or a DD Audio 12" with that same amplifier, and I don't want to buy another subwoofer.
>>
>>28992750

Actually I might have only one option because the box for a 2x12 Peerless probably doesn't even fit.
>>
>>28992750
I see, in which case, enjoy your bass box. I was under the assumption that nothing was purchased yet.

In your case, your priority is a built box. I made an assumption of wanting maximum space utilization (like I did and just wired up a SS10 and called it a day) and I was ready to recommend something that fit under a seat.
>>
>>28992755

I have owned these subwoofers for a long time.

>>28992686

I was also originally thinking of replacing the head unit with Kenwood's Bluetooth head unit, but I read that parking sensors stop working without the original radio. I still may do that, but I want to try first with the original radio.

I have heard that there are also Bluetooth systems that can be installed for the original radio to get Bluetooth working.
>>

>but I read that parking sensors stop working without the original radio
See if Crutchfield sells a piggyback module to emulate the CANBUS signals so you don't lose your sensors.
>>
>>28989223
The rear speaker outputs are probably high passed which doesn't make them ideal for feeding a sub. Also what does your electrical system look like? Is your alternator enough? are the supply wires thick enough? Your car may be new enough that it may get pissy if you're dropping the voltage down to 10v or whatever.
>>
>>28992767

From what I've read, the rear speakers receive a full-range signal, but I don't know for all the rest. I believe the car has an original factory-installed alternator and original wires & original everything since I bough this car from elderly man.

I have a tiny amplifier of only 1500 watts.
>>
>>28991446
plenty of these cars with alright speakers around.
Search the online wreckers, might even get a warranty.
>>
>>28989223
HU-605 is not the correct stereo for your car, it is for the S40 and V40 only

Although you can actually fit the HU 1205 from the S40/V40 into P2 cars
