How big a deal is it to not have power steering in your daily? I'm about to pick up a new old tiny 2000lb fagmobile, but I feel like the small turning radius isn't really useable without power steering
There's a technique to driving with unpowered steering, the trick is to use movement to turn the wheels easier, like it's so much easier to turn while moving very slightly and also easier while not holding the brakes. I was an idiot when I was a teenager and I depowered my steering because I believed in the road feel myth, I had to struggle with turning a depowered rack using the steering ratio of a powered rack while a true manual rack would use a steering ratio easier for unpowered turning.
>>28993321its really only a problem during low speed maneuvering like >>28993326 said, when you're rolling you barely feel it unless you're turning hard>I had to struggle with turning a depowered rack using the steering ratio of a powered rack while a true manual rack would use a steering ratio easier for unpowered turningAlso this, a car with non-functioning power steering != a car without power steering
None of my cars have power steering, it's literally a non issue.Whenever I hop into a car with power steering, my first reaction is "what the fuck, is this shit broken?" When I turn the wheel and it gives next to no resistance.
>>28993321My 5'0" wife has no problems chauffeuring her father around in his non-power-steering Wartburg. Are you weaker than a small woman?
>>28993326years ago a coworker asked me why I hadn't deleted the power steering on my 190E. he was adamant that it would improve road feel. I didn't believe him.
>>28993321It depends on the car and the ratio of the power steering, of you have an old Honda civic thay came without it you'll be fine, but if you have a Honda Accord with a quick ratio steering rack that came with power steering, its literally undrivable due to heavy car with quick ratio.
>>28993326You're supposed to only turn the steering wheel while moving in power steering cars too unless you wish to replace your steering rack and ps pump
>>289933215 point turns suck
>>28993321None of my cars have power steering and I don't hanker for it, ever. But they're all under say 2100lbs (Suzuki & Mazda)
>>28993480It does improve road feel if you properly depower the rack (greasing the rack and pinching the lines) or do a manual conversion but it sucks at low speed moving. The benefits of road feel really only shows if you're pushing the car so hard front traction gives out, when the front gives or about to give the steering loosens up a lot. It's also useful for snow and non-abs but really it sucks big time in parking lot movements. It's worth trying before committing but I was a stupid teenager when I did it and just did it
>>28993491I legit didn't know this because no one ever told me and I've worked as a mechanic for a few years lel>>28993612Mine was an rx7 FC that I depowered (I also stripped the interior) and about a 2600lb car is manageable even with a quick ratio powered rack
