For your first car get a small shitbox especially as a bong. Insurance will decimate you unless you are over 25. If you're young, you want a shitbox as you will bump it, you will scrape it as you and your mates do dumb shit in it for banter.
Never finance a car. It's not worth it apart from in very specific instances and you aren't in that instance, because you're a new driver. If you find a few cars you're interested in, check what insurance category they're in (1 to 50, 1 being cheapest) and it'll give you a rough idea as to what'll be the cheapest to insure. Don't automatically assume that cars with tiny engines will be cheapest, insurance companies care more about accident rates than engine size and such. As an example, they quoted me £10,000 for a Chevy Matiz, but only £3,000 for a 1965 Daimler V8.
