In many ways their product range was just bad but at the same time nobody wants Harley when they make not-oversized crusier. They had a chance to get their foot into sportsbikes with buel but decided to drop it, for instance.

The dumb part is that they never had to be like this. Resurrected Triumph can have a heritage line and perfectly reasonable offerings in other segments(perfectly good advs, really nice nakeds especially speed triples recently even some offroad machines) while Harley is like, yeah we make big crusiers. If people are currently into them they'll buy them, if they're not, Harley has nothing to offer to them. Lots of people buy something like a honda rebel 500 harley pretends like that money stinks. People buy advs harley only recently jumped on the wagon, before that the adv money stank I guess.

Its an expensive toy in an era where middle class disposable income is collapsing. The American mass market consumerism that enabled them is dying and thats 66% of Harley's market. Normal people just don't have the money to spend on things other than essentials and maybe cheap, throwaway hobbies. The generational wealth builder of home ownership is also fundamentally broken.

It's the same reason the median car buyer is 53. Half of new cars are bought by people over 55 years old while the 18-35 demographic only accounts for 10%. Same story for riders. In thenUS, there are almost twice as many riders over 60 years old than there are 29 and below. the formative 18-24 demographic only makes up ~6% of riders now. The majority of riders are over 50 years old and the average buyer is 47. In 1990, the average rider was 32.

Its all made worse by bikes being pointless vanity purchases with no practicality to justify them. Unless you live in California, that is. But Harley would rather sell of their finance arm and ram the $300 million into stock buybacks instead of doing some long term growth by lobbying major regional states to allow lane splitting. Getting lane splitting in cities would open a massive new market, but as a publically traded company, Harley isn't able to do anything but loot corporate equity and transfer it to day traders who are shorting the company anyways.

>inb4 muh culture wars/dei/trannys/electrics
Nobody actually cares about whatever minority demographic you're currently obsessed with. It's always been about money.
>>
>>28994960
Look at the bright side, the US is collapsing so fast bikes will soon go from vanity toys to essential last resort transport for some of those hardest hit by this clown economy

>the US is collapsing
That's overly dramatic and not even close to what's happening. Unless something dramatic happens, the US will just slowly slide down in a slow hollowing out. More post-war Britain or Francoist Spain than the USSR in the 90s. Just a gradual decline in living standards and relevance. The US has an exceptionally weak foundation heading into what is going to be a politically, ecomically, and ecologically unstable century.

Are y'all not aware young guys have been stunting sportsters and dynas for awhile now??? Harleys aren't fast, but tuned up they're not slow either. Also performance baggers are somehow a thing now. The scene truly is more than oldheads on their full dresser geezerglides, but most of you don't ride so I don't know why you're even in this thread anyway.

It's not about if you are fast, its about of other people are faster than you. If someone else has a faster bike than you, then they're better than you. The vast majority of people aren't able to separate their egos from their possessions. Their happiness with something isn't based on if they like it, but if other people will like it.

>>28995321
Some millenials did. In that demographic, there's a huge gulf between doing well and getting by. It warps the mean numbers.

Yeah the average Harley rider is a boomer but I see tons of 40 and under riders with sporties, dynas and softails. Once they start making money they get a roadglide. I don’t ever think Harley will die, but people just don’t have the disposable income they used to, so it’ll restructure. Also, the Buel Super Cruiser is the bike the lowrider S should have been.

Hold up, maybe I am wrong on this but I always considered millenials being born 1990 to 2000. Maaaybe 1988 or 1989. But people born early 80's are supposed to be Gen X and had a totally different life compared to those born in the 90's. Just seems disingenious.

The standard definition is '82-'96. I think it's stupid too, as an '86. Most of my friends in my late teens and early 20s were Gen X and I feel that I have way more in common with somebody born in 1978 than somebody born in 1994.
>>

Their affordable bikes don't look or feel like "real Harleys," turning off younger people who actually like Harleys.
They've clung to an image that mostly is only cool to boomers and is just seen as embarrassing by younger people. (Case in point the ubiquitous CRANKIN MAH HAWG memes.)
Dealers overinvested in whole walls of Harley-branded clothes that don't sell to younger riders and filled their floors with $30k+ tricked out baggers instead of the sportier options that appeal more to younger people.
They've become popular with black guys and anything that becomes popular with blacks ends up losing popularity with everyone else. (Cadillac etc.)

>>
>>28995616
There’s a lot of younger Harley riders, but I don’t think Harley knows how to pivot to them. You can still have 50k bikes like the CVO ST, but have somewhat affordable options that still feel like a Harley. The Nightster and Sportster S, feel foreign to me. It doesn’t feel like a Harley.

>>
>>28996604
I agree. I haven't seen many other people point this out, but IMO one of the things that really makes a Harley look like a Harley is that the engine is kinda "naked" and you can see right through the frame around it. The Nightster and Sportster S don't have that and it makes them look like metric bikes.

Went to a bike shop and the guy there said most of the customers are people in their 60's who spend $30k or whatever every 2 or 3 years. even the bits about not requiring licensing/registration and letting you ride like an asshole are also related to just cost and time. getting a license these days is a time investment a lot of people don't have, and getting a car to practice with (let alone bring to a road test) is expensive and/or impractical for many people

Emissions and noise limits. The emissions limits are so strict that its very hard to legally produce large displacement air/oil cooled engines. Ethanol fuel would be a way to solve this issue but nobody wants it.

In the 1930s-70s cool people road motorcycles.

Then in the 2000s boomers had the disposable income to ride them, and combined with the "motorcycles are for da cool guys" nostalgia a bunch of fat old guys started riding Harleys.

Now boomers are geriatric and too old to ride Harleys. But millenials just think of motorcycles as being for fat old dudes and won't touch them.

Boomers killed the Harley.

every harley rider is either a wannabe tuff guy boomer, a boomer who is carrying a sawn-off shotgun and too much cocaine, or a fat brown boomer. they literally only appeal to boomers

their "classic" bikes were cheap milsurp parts with a proper commercial finish, cheap and accessible, but still powerful for the time and place, and had pretty typical (but well-executed) styling. they have become overpriced cariacatures of themselves for people who got lead-related brain damage and have a geometrically inaccurate memory of how things used to be and now demand massive ape hangers on 40 degree rake on a "bike" that's the size of a minivan and only avoids death wobble by having zero ground clearance

they indulge this retardation on purpose because lead-damaged boomers are the only wh*te people with enough disposable income for a bike that costs more than a car

its not endemic to the touring bikes, which this does look like, so it was not the cause here, but to the dyna platform, which was vey popular
look up "dyna death wobble"
most harley tank slappers are dynas, of course they can happen to all bikes, but harleys being the plurality of registered vehicles we do see a lot of that

king of the bagger engines are air cooled v-twins, which neither of those companies produce
if they allowed the r18 in it would be pretty bad since the engine reduces the maximum lean angle you could give the motorcycle
while i imagine you could juice the six cyclinders of the gwing above and beyond a v-twin if you also removed the configuration and air cooling requirements, as it stands, comparing output to output at the wheel, the goldwing actually comes in underneath the high output m8 engines

>>
>>28994710
Not dead at all. They're in significant financial decline because they can't get away with squeezing boomers for car-priced bikes anymore, but the people running around screaming that Harley is dead are falling victim to the same social trends that they are claiming killed Harley.
We're seeing the ebbs and flows of culture and counter-culture everywhere and its no different with bikes. Harleys were the counter-culture for a while, then they became the culture, and we're wrapping back around to where its claim to counter-culture status is legitimate again. The popular opinion is now that Harleys are lame. Harleys are for fags. There's an entire episode of South Park dedicated to taking the piss out of Harley riders specifically and that makes riding one counter-cultural.
Modern western society has been carefully crafted to destroy masculinity, masculine iconography and masculine experiences. Men are taught to be weak, vulnerable, dependent, effeminate, and apologetic. This culture naturally breeds counter-culture which means that HD is ripe for a resurgence.

>Modern western society has been carefully crafted to destroy masculinity, masculine iconography and masculine experiences. Men are taught to be weak, vulnerable, dependent, effeminate, and apologetic. This culture naturally breeds counter-culture which means that HD is ripe for a resurgence
So the solution is to dress up in easy rider cosplay and roll around going BRABUBURBABAAABABABABABBRUURBBABABABA?

You can't make money off a counterculture, because they're by definition a bunch of broke-ass social left-behinds. This modern myth shit about Harley being for outsiders is fucking stupid. They never were and the company's success has always been tied to how popular they were in the given popular culture. Their customer base has *always* been normal people.

Stigma of being exclusively ridden by boomers, as their consumer base slowly dies off there's nobody left to think they're cool motorcycles. Harley shot itself in the foot multiple times. They stuck to the outlaw gang image past its heyday, they refused to innovate and market their innovations, they never diversified, and their prices are way out of 90% of riders' budgets. A base nightster is more than a well spec'd parallel twin naked of any of the big 4 which all offer better performance. Their pricing pushes their bikes into territory with stuff it can't compete with
