Rubbermounting the swingarm is a dumbass idea that japs stopped doing in the 80s. The dyna is a cool name but the street bob is straight up lighter and stiffer and better handling. Go buy used if you care that much.

Or buy a schporty

In many ways their product range was just bad but at the same time nobody wants Harley when they make not-oversized crusier. They had a chance to get their foot into sportsbikes with buel but decided to drop it, for instance.

The dumb part is that they never had to be like this. Resurrected Triumph can have a heritage line and perfectly reasonable offerings in other segments(perfectly good advs, really nice nakeds especially speed triples recently even some offroad machines) while Harley is like, yeah we make big crusiers. If people are currently into them they'll buy them, if they're not, Harley has nothing to offer to them. Lots of people buy something like a honda rebel 500 harley pretends like that money stinks. People buy advs harley only recently jumped on the wagon, before that the adv money stank I guess.

Its an expensive toy in an era where middle class disposable income is collapsing. The American mass market consumerism that enabled them is dying and thats 66% of Harley's market. Normal people just don't have the money to spend on things other than essentials and maybe cheap, throwaway hobbies. The generational wealth builder of home ownership is also fundamentally broken.

It's the same reason the median car buyer is 53. Half of new cars are bought by people over 55 years old while the 18-35 demographic only accounts for 10%. Same story for riders. In thenUS, there are almost twice as many riders over 60 years old than there are 29 and below. the formative 18-24 demographic only makes up ~6% of riders now. The majority of riders are over 50 years old and the average buyer is 47. In 1990, the average rider was 32.

Its all made worse by bikes being pointless vanity purchases with no practicality to justify them. Unless you live in California, that is. But Harley would rather sell of their finance arm and ram the $300 million into stock buybacks instead of doing some long term growth by lobbying major regional states to allow lane splitting. Getting lane splitting in cities would open a massive new market, but as a publically traded company, Harley isn't able to do anything but loot corporate equity and transfer it to day traders who are shorting the company anyways.

>inb4 muh culture wars/dei/trannys/electrics
Nobody actually cares about whatever minority demographic you're currently obsessed with. It's always been about money.
>>
>>28994960
Look at the bright side, the US is collapsing so fast bikes will soon go from vanity toys to essential last resort transport for some of those hardest hit by this clown economy
>>
>>28994710
HELL YEAH BROTHER
>>
>>28994978
>the US is collapsing
That's overly dramatic and not even close to what's happening. Unless something dramatic happens, the US will just slowly slide down in a slow hollowing out. More post-war Britain or Francoist Spain than the USSR in the 90s. Just a gradual decline in living standards and relevance. The US has an exceptionally weak foundation heading into what is going to be a politically, ecomically, and ecologically unstable century.
>>
>>28994978
The US is great if you're in the top 5%
Stonks and real estate is way up. Tons of disposable income

Lmao. They claim that they ride apart in a subculture separate from the rest of society but then get panicky and emotional when the rest of society doesn't know their secret rules. They're all like this and I can't take them seriously.
>>
>machine with technology unchanged from the 1950s
>charge $30,000 for it
the reason Harleys got popular in the first place is because they were originally so cheap that you could buy a half dozen of them and then wreck them for fun.
>>
>>28994710
They're too expensive. The newer models look fucking gay. Whatever grand-touring cruiser they're making now is as wide as a fucking Corolla. If you're retarded enough to ride a motorcycle, why wouldn't you just get a jap naked bike for 1/3 the price that is way more fun and less cringe?
>>
They are slow, that's it
for a vehicle to be cool, it needs to be fast, or at least powerful like truggs
the cool kids moved on to jap bikes in the 80s and never went back
if it wasnt for sons of anarchy romanticizing 60s biker culture, this brand would have died ten years ago, like gibson
>how to save it?
kill all models except the sons of anarchy one and custom build, make a bike that can do 350 km / h, STOP SELLING TRICYCLES AND WHATEVER THAT TRIANGLE SHIT BOOMERS RIDE IS CALLED
>>
>>28995236
Even the fattest slowest Harley has a better 0-60 time than everything short of a Corvette.
>>
>>28995244
I've never ridden a harley, but they do look slow and feel slow. Ive never seen anyone ride fast on a harley. At the end of the day perception becomes reality.
To become associated witb boomers is death as a brand.
Yes, you can make good music on a gibson guitar. But chances are you are playing faggot zeppelin covers.
>>
>>28995252
>to be come associated with boomers is the death of a brand
this has only been the case for the last 15 or so years. from the 1960s until at least the 2000s, courting boomers was the best way to make money.
>>
>>28995265
The difference is, in those decades, working professionals had expendable income. Gen x was the last generation to reach near-universal "boomer wealth".
>>
>>28995316
millennials gladly drop 5 figures on video game collections and old Japanese economy cars. young people have money, they just don't have the same tastes as boomers.
>>
>>28995316
>>28995321
I think you're both right to an extent. Different spending habits but also we have more people living paycheck than ever before.
>>
>>28995336
Paycheck to paycheck*
But still, if millennials really wanted Harleys they'd take out a loan on them I'm sure. Being poor has historically never stopped people from making bad financial decisions.
>>
>>28995244
HELL YEAH BROTHER
>>
>>28995316
people still have expendable income they just spend it in every direction. stop going to bars and restaurants for one year and oh look at that, money for a fucking bike materializes
>>
>>28995349
Boomers do have more money than younger gens, but it's normal for middle-aged and elderly people to have more money than people in their 20s and 30s. they've been alive longer, have saved money longer, have more life experience and know how to manage their money better. that's just reality. the issue is, with Harley at least, they continued targeting the same demographic as that demographic got older and richer and adjusted their prices to match. they made no effort to attract the next generation of riders, so broke the chain inheritance. they hold no cultural value to a guy in his 20s now because he was gatekept from being able to buy one, because Harley said he wasn't worth pursuing as a customer.

>>28995357
people underestimate how fast even a "slow" bike is. a Harley still has a power to weight ratio of like 150hp per ton, which puts it not far behind a Mustang GT or a BMW M3. even a 250cc beginner bike will smoke 90% of cars on the road.

Are y'all not aware young guys have been stunting sportsters and dynas for awhile now??? Harleys aren't fast, but tuned up they're not slow either. Also performance baggers are somehow a thing now. The scene truly is more than oldheads on their full dresser geezerglides, but most of you don't ride so I don't know why you're even in this thread anyway.

>What killed Harleys?

They're over priced, boomers are too old to ride them and they're not culturally relevant to younger generations.

It's a mystery.
>>
>>28995588
So a nightser is the same price as a goldwing?
>>
>>28995244
It's not about if you are fast, its about of other people are faster than you. If someone else has a faster bike than you, then they're better than you. The vast majority of people aren't able to separate their egos from their possessions. Their happiness with something isn't based on if they like it, but if other people will like it.

>>28995321
Some millenials did. In that demographic, there's a huge gulf between doing well and getting by. It warps the mean numbers.

>>28995379
>not constant dollars
>no breakout of the percentiles
Aggregate data doesn't tell enough of the story here.
>>
>>28994710
Yeah the average Harley rider is a boomer but I see tons of 40 and under riders with sporties, dynas and softails. Once they start making money they get a roadglide. I don’t ever think Harley will die, but people just don’t have the disposable income they used to, so it’ll restructure. Also, the Buel Super Cruiser is the bike the lowrider S should have been.
>>
>>28995612

it's the other way around.
the cops and your pastor rode Harleys. Honda was for the long haired, unemployed, draft dodgers. until they weren't.
ultimately I don't think anything could 'kill' Harley. but the CB750 did at least take a lung.
