The 1990s was the peak car era. Why did auto makers accidently make so many cool cars?

The Japs were riding high on their pumping economy at the time these cars were in development and were throwing everything they had at mogging the competition and shedding their reputations as makers of ‘great value’ economy boxes. Everyone has their time in the sun and it was definitely a bit of a golden age for Jap auto manufacturing.
>>
>>28997813
It was an interesting time yea. Just slap a turbo, manual and lsd on everything and sell it. Cars might be faster now but we'll never have the same level on nonsensical fun

What is with millennials and being obsessed with 90s gookscrap? Can anyone explain this shit?
>>
>>28998057
They were ALIVE for it you retard
>>
>>28998057
I am an early zoomer and I am partial to 90s gookslop also. It’s just based simple as. I harbour no nostalgia for 2000s cars despite me growing up in that period bc they are comparatively uninspired. Also I guess NFS games and fast and furious ricerfag culture was well and truly in the zeitgeist then so maybe that contributed. In highscool speedhunters and ‘thing Japan’ worship also started so there’s that also.

If we're talking fast red 90s Italian boxes, for me it's this.
>>
>>28998075
Nice biturbo
Is it a ghibli?
Im not super versed in this era of maseratis
>>
>>28998082
It gets pretty messy around the early 90s with Maseratis situation. That one's a Biturbo 222 4v, the last development of the Biturbo before the Ghibli was introduced.
>>
>>28998075
A lot of Italian cars were nice in the 90s. Technically an 80s design but a 90s car here.
>>
>>28998057
80s and 90s cars just had cool and fun shit like VFD displays and if they didn't, they at least had the perfect balance of computer engine management and serviceability
>>
>>28998057
It was a simpler time. Nostalgia. Before auto makers turned everything they sold into an suv.
>>
>>
>>28997849
They are fast, but 90's cars are still more agile and better at corners.

A lot of it was very high quality in terms of materials, machining and casting too, built to some autistic high standards and it wasn't that hard to work on.
There's sort of a sweet spot when it wasn't unobtainable, it was understandable and no one gave a fuck if you wanted to mess around with it in your own garage, about the most complicated thing was diddling an ECU to adjust some flow rates and mixtures.
Now everything is proprietary and the companies definitely not going to want you taking money out of the dealerships paws for work you 'can' do yourself
>>
>>28998057
Nostalgia might be part of it but they are also simply cool. No one is nostalgic for 70's cars, not even the boomers. Just see what the new prelude look like and compare it to the old one. Every modern car looked similarly ugly and boring.
>>
>>28998057
Also they are used to be obtainable dream car. At least before Obama ruined it.

>no gay ass nanny state laws, a thriving economy, worldwide hope for the future, no rampant shareholder value maximization while sacrificing everything but safety rating and maximum fuel efficiency
>just designing cars and products to actually evoke emotions without being ironic about it
You just wouldn't get it, and if you can't understand the things that attributed to the rose-tint, then I pity that you had to grow up in a time that's so fucked up.

The sr20det was legend yes. Like many cars of the 90s, any retard could bolt a few mods in the engine and achieve 0 to 60 times in the 4 second range.

Still to this day it makes no sense to me not to have an LSD as default equipment. All vehicles are better even a fwd with a basic 1 way.

Italians were on something in the 90s.
Might be something to do with the clubbing scene.
>lets put a turbocharged i5 in all our cars because ???
>>
>>28998125
It was very cheap to get 280-300rwhp out of an SR20, there was a literal mountain of highly developed aftermarket parts, a fair few people who knew the obvious spots to look out for and comparatively easy work. Sure you could get much higher than that, but you'd end up spending bigger money on bottom ends, heads, oil pumps etc.
A lot of the Jap 4's from the 80's and 90's were like that
Plus people have to remember that they were also hooked up to something that was around 900-1100kg and it ratio'd the fuck out of a lot of heavier vehicles so they were a real bargain compared to the Skylines, Supras and other stuff of the time which was quite a bit more money, expertise and parts costs.
>>
>>28998112
>No one is nostalgic for 70's cars
You seen the prices lately? They're coming back because there's no car more comfortable than a 70's American land barge, especially compared to the misery boxes of today.

anon, the time you grew up was extremely fucked up compared to your predecessors. you are literally nothing special in the grand scheme of things
Thats millennials' problem, think theyre special snowflaes

If you were in the US, western Europe, or Japan (some parts as it was during total Gen X death for them) in the 90's life was pretty good. The hell of the 1970's and the fear from most of the 80's had past, and people in the western-minded states thought it was the start of a new age of exceptionalism. For eastern Europe, the middle east, and Africa it was omega-hell
>>
>>28998112
bro late 60s to early 70s cars are the biggest pieces of nostalgia bait in existence

Basically yea. Cars now can accelerate 0 to 60 in quicker times but they weigh more due to safety bullshit regulations. 90s cars were light and were never going back. That's a reason why it was peak time for cars because auto makers could make them light. Like the mk3 golf. In diesel format it mogs any new non hybrid car in mpg. In the 90s. And still had decent usable torque. Or had a vr6 if you wanted a bit more power.

Litterally the 1970's

You must be either extremely young or the aforementioned eastern European, middle easterner, or African. All the shit you mentioned was already there well before the 90's
