the compromises-be-damned, best-of-the-best. Holy Grail tier best option in auto tech.1st nominee, Gear Driven Overhead Cams
>>28999715imagine the noise
Desmodromic valves
I nominate the worm gear final drive. They were used in very early gear driven designs, but were very quickly phased out when hypoid gears and differentials arrived. The neat thing about them is that they can only be driven one way, from the engine output side, meaning a parking brake is not necessary.

>>28999715hydraulic radiator fans. people apparently had problems on the jeeps that had these, but i've never heard anyone complain about the toyota ones. they move a stupid amount of air at full speed and aren't as loud compared to electric ones too.
>>29001717>dimpled intake portingProven to be placebo.
>>29001723What powers that, hydroboost?
>>28999715Consider:
>>29001723> people apparently had problems on the jeeps that had theseHmm, I wonder why.
>>29001728power steering pump. for toyotas it had its own little ecu and a solenoid for controlling fan operation. i think it also read the speedo so if the car was going fast enough it'd just shut the valve and let the fan freewheel.
>>29001735i only brought it up because some people's experience with hydro fans have only ever been the jeep ones so they think it's garbage. but my experience with them have only ever been with toyotas and they never seemed to have a problem.
>>28999715multi layer steel gasketsor maybe a monobloc engine

>>29001737Oh wow thats so quirky any downsides? Any reason no one does that anymore?
The MacPherson Strut
>>29002354too expensive and extra complexity presumably. but it did allow greater flexibility in engine design, you didn't have to worry about placing the water pump so that a fan was run off it, you had more room between the radiator and the engine etc.it was probably overkill, as mentioned before, they move a huge amount of air.
>>29002649>they move a huge amount of airSo does a mechanical fan-clutch and fan attached directly to the water pump. Adding a hydraulic motor and a bunch of leak points seems like a very Germantistic thing.
>>29001737>>29002354Well for the first generation of the BMW Mini Cooper they did a similar thing with an electric fan cooling the PS pump but because BMW it sometimes shorts and catches fire burning the whole car down. People think it's somehow due to dust from the brushes building up maybe mixing with engine grime as it's below and behind the engine.
>>28999875>What happens when you wanna engine brake or coast???The design of the drive gearing is such that the worm can be driven. The Torsen diff used in the HMMWV is an example of "reversible" worm gearing. The simpler worm drive truck diffs were of a similar nature.>>29001908You're silly.
>>29002397>good enough for a BMW M3>cheap enough for a Yugono wonder it causes immeasurable levels of seethe in the /o/tist
>>29002397Fucking hate looking at these things, you know the shit is just a rental
>>28999723>>29002823Worm final drives are cool but realistically inferior to hypoid gears unless you plan on exclusive off-road use at 30mph or less. Sure the tooth contact area is massive, but the drive efficiency is absolutely abysmal. They also need substantially more robust bearings to deal with the deflection loads. They started with worms because they were easier to design and produce.
The goat sack
>>29002654as mentioned before, those require engine placement to be limited so that the fan is still mostly behind the radiator or a shroud that can increase its effectiveness. fixed and clutch fans can move a lot of air, but hydro fans will move even more than them still. you can also run the hydro fan at full speed while the car is idling, whereas fixed fans struggle here and viscous fans albeit to a much lesser degree.it's definitely overkill but that's the topic of the thread, and unlike the krauts, the jap ones are great.
>>29003030Interesting thanks anon. Idle ironically is when passenger cars seem to need the fan the most (stuck in traffic on the 405 in summer). I had no idea there was an alternative to accessory electric fans for this application. Are they useful enough that people ever retrofit them to builds? Can I plumb it in to PS pump fittings on any old car?Surely, electric fan +/- better radiator is a better strategy for most builds.
>>29003039i think for all but the most autistic, electrics typically suffice. you could theoretically scab the hydro fan setup off a wrecked toyota that has one, then it's a matter of plumbing the lines and wiring up the fan ecu, or maybe even get an aftermarket fan controller that does the same thing but controlling a solenoid valve that adjusts flow of ps fluid to the fan.The other challenge would also be finding a power steering pump that not only goes to the power steering, but also to the fan; as an example the camry power steering pump has two pressure and two return ports. if you had non-power steering this might not be a problem, but you probably don't want the pressure to be too high either.
>>29003048>electrics typically sufficeand viscous. i feel that viscous still movrs more air than electrics. the only ways you'd get an electric to move as much sir as even the hydro fans is if you got the fan and motor from a mk8 lincoln continental, they were absolute units that flowed a lot of air.
>>29002354Heavy equipment with hydraulic systems often use hydraulic engine fans. It's convenient because you can reverse the fan and blow dust/dirt out of the rad.
>>29001717>be alfa>make dohc 2valve headI love it.The 1.7 8v in my 155 is genuinely the happiest engine i have ever driven
