Post technoslop that is actually cool/useful

My current Lexus and the previous one have/had this feature, which is actually fantastic, too bad that I never drive during the evening so it's a waste of money 99.5% of the year.

why the fuck would i buy a modern car?
>>
>>29005546
this shit never works fast enough. just stop driving with your highs on at 5pm

i swear, modern drivers are all fucking blind
>>
>>29005594
The cheap ones are like that, like the ones you see on cheap cars like Toyota Yaris/Cross and Opel Corsa, if you equip them on premium/luxury cars they work wonderfully but a single headlight will cost you 3000€ as spare part.
>>
>>29005564
have you checked the topic of the thread you're posting in
>>29005596
chinks are starting to release $100 replacements. there's nothing particularly crazy technology wise about these, it's just OEM markup.
>>
>>29005546
oh good so the source is actually less apparent to oncoming, still silhouettes everything in front of them so they cant see shit, and turns the road into a rave as it freaks out trying to calculate what's a car and what's not

just reduce the fucking brightness and use a reflective housing

i'd argue that it's the same problem plaguing street lighting - brighter isn't always better, especially when the transition/contrast between light and dark areas is so great that someone can actually hide themselves by simply standing just outside the illuminated area

but you can get a 700 megawatt equivalent led that only pulls 8W why wouldn't we just make every light as bright as the sun? what's the worst that could happen?

I still don't understand what was so wrong with halogen lightbulbs that we had to replace them.
>>
>>29008403
Do you people who always say this ever drive where there is no street lighting? 1000 lumen halogens are terrible when it's pitch black. They're even terrible when there is street lighting. They usually don't have a wide light spread so you don't see the retarded 2 legged animals about to jump out from the parked cars. Bright headlights are safer in situations like these.

not that i would ever use that shit myself, but when boomers cry about "no physical dials/knobs, having to look at a screen" bullshit.

like holy FUCK get with the TIMES.
>>
>>29008407
They're like that so you don't blind other people. If you absolutely need more light and there's nobody else around then there's this neat invention called "high beams" you can use.
>>
>>29008473
but im always using highbeams
>>
I'm 36. Driving at night is only getting worse. Even if these systems worked, the light source is still so bright, and the intensity of light on the area so great it is blinding. Yesterday while driving during the late afternoon, I was hit by an increasing pain in the eyes. Confused and scanning around, my sight settled on a man on a bicycle and I realized it was the 4 inch, round, led lamp on his bike lit up and searing my retinas. Everyone will become blind at the culmination of this arms race.
>>
>>29008419
button/switch just werks
>>
>>29008407
>They're even terrible when there is street lighting
that's because modern LED street lights are so bright that the contrast between lit and unlit areas is great enough to obscure objects you used to be able to see with dimmer bulbs.
the correct application of LEDs would've been to generate the same total light output (and colour temperature) as the old mercury or sodium vapor lamps they replaced.

I drove around in Vegas at night with a tinted windshield and didnt realize my headlights were off because the streets are so well lit. Even the freeways have massive lights.
So in that situation the 10,000 lumen retina burners on every other car are a nuisance and accomplish nothing for the driver but are still a hindrance to oncoming traffic.

In contrast im now in the sticks and on a cloudy moonless night I had to stick my head out the window of that car to see and putt home at 35mph.
Now when I drive 15 miles and see 32 deer and zero other cars im grateful for the LED upgrade.

>>
>>29010922
you don't need to use the higher efficiency of LEDs to make every light eye searingly bright all the time
>>
>>29010936
led bulbs on the market dont have higher efficiency than sodium lamps, they are pretty much equal.
your point is trash and you lack any meaningfull knowlege on the topic, are you at retirement age with developing dementia or a 30y old boomer?
>>
>>29010942
leds draw 1/3 to 1/2 the amount of power of a sodium lamp for the same level of illumination
>>
>>29010951
thats not true. with sodium lamps the majority of illuminations is simply not perceived because the wavelength band is so narrow. it still eye rapes you at 590nm

>>
>>29008495
there are three issues with the current LED design.
first is that they all have lenses, which no shit, focus the light and have the cutoff you mentioned earlier.
they also are usually not applying a DC current to the diode itself for whatever reason of heat, cost, etc., and that means flickering.
then they all, even nominally warmer color temp lights, have shit peaky spectral spikes that both overactivate your rods and don't sufficiently illuminate and contrast what gets lit up. the peaky spectrum makes it hard to mentally register detail.
there are like 4 or 5 companies total that make good LED lighting, and you usually have to buy in bulk as an institution or business like a movie studio or museum, there aren't really any resellers and aren't any good ways to buy them as replacements instead of initial equipment
>>
Without fail, whenever someone says that helper tech XYZ is oh so useful, it's always
1. not actually all that useful if you have a brain
2. a major source of annoyance and/or danger to everyone else on the road
>>
>>29013128

>>
>>29005596
>if you equip them on premium/luxury cars they work wonderfully but a single headlight will cost you 3000€ as spare part.
no they fucking do not. every single new bmw, mercedes, audi equipped with this bullshit blinded me. The milisecond delay it takes for this to work is enough to make your eyes lose their adaptation to the dark.
not only this, the new super bright bullshit will blind you even if its perfectly aligned if there's any moisture on the ground. the fucking reflections are brighter now than most headlights were 5 years ago
anything other than halogen headlights should be banned and strictly regulated. FUCK. i hate driving at night now
>>
>>29011047
I think i prefer it over one wheel locking the other out of traction.

>>29005596
Matrix is nice on Tesla.
But its also a car where the OEM headlights are tilted wrong by factory, and the software is not setup for the Matrix to recalibrate on wrong headlight tilt. So you still would need to visit shop for calibration, otherwise the blackout pixels would be misplaced as fuck.

Legacy implementation is pretty horrid, for VAG/BWM/JDM. Its all the same sensors. Either it defects cut off correctly, or its a shit show.

>>29008517
You can angle a dead zone mini mirror dowbward for 90% of the same effect. Stick it in the outher edge of the mirror and angle it.
But its pretty based once its also combined with side cameras, so you no longer have to do any guessing.
>>
>>29005715
>Why don't they just start making them badly on purpose?

>>29008473

This is utter ridiculousness.
People are literally sick because of these damn LEDS and the missing light spectrum.
Bring back:
1. Mercury vapor or Sodium vapor lighting for cities and highways
2. Halogen bulbs for vehicles.

You can just mimic the light output of these instead of making everything 100k lumen eye searing bright white, and get vastly lower energy consumption and far better longevity to boot
