>starter went out 900 miles from home coming back from a road trip
>$1,100 to get it fixed at a local shop

>>

You couldn't just walk to a parts store and change it yourself for $150? Also starters rarely just fail out of the blue. That's on you for not knowing it's about to fail and going on a long road trip.
>>
>>29012362
I didn't realize this was plebbit lmao, already one smartass response
>$150
No. it's a le modern car so it requires a lift and to remove the cat to get to the starter from underneath. this is a notoriously difficult to access starter. If it takes a mechanic 6 hours then what would it take (You).
> Also starters rarely just fail out of the blue
Yes it failed twice while getting there but was eventually able to get started after multiple attempts. What are you supposed to do besides hope that it just lasts the whole trip..?

>rent cabin in the Appalachian foothills in January
>last night there, driving back up the hill to the cabin, car gets stuck on the hill due to an ice storm, won't go any further
>cook the clutch extra well done trying to get it unstuck, somehow manage to drive 3 hours home and have the clutch completely fail on my way to work
next year, new car, definitely has better clutch/tires
>rent same cabin again
>last night there, try to drive up the hill to the cabin after being snowed in for 3 days
>get stuck again
>don't fry the clutch this time, immediately give up and reverse back down the hill
>do almost reverse off the side of the hill into a creek because nighttime, no backup camera, and tinted windows
>spend 30 minutes digging car out of the snow while hoping it doesn't roll backwards
>still can't see shit, end up overcorrecting and almost reverse off the other side of the hill
>spend another 30 minutes digging out again, breaking a snow shovel in the process and having to resort to my e-tool
Can't wait to go back next year!
>>
>>29012647
At least do it in the morning lol
>>29012632
How does the car even drive with a bad timing tensioner?
Did you ever consider giving up, calling a tow to a shop, booking flight tickets, and all that?
>>
>>29012682
Its a pretty steep hill, the car did shift at one point while I was digging it out. The road also splits at that point, so I was blocking the road to another cabin on the property. At least they didn't charge me for the broken snow shovel.
>>
>>29012647

this owner must love having suckers rent his cabin in winter and get stuck and still have to pay
he should be helping you put on chains at the bottom of the hill esp. if you are a repeat customer
chains could have avoided these situations, to be fair i'm not mechanically inclined and have never used them myself, but you definitely need them for sheet ice.
>>
>>29012731
I don't remember, just had them put on in October, they still had any of tread. I'll check what I've got tomorrow, they're some basic bitch chinky all seasons. They do fine in Cleveland winters, but it's mostly flat there. A foot of snow in the mountains was just too much.
>>
If I was in the middle of nowhere doing mechanic work I'd throw out insane quotes like 12 hours $2000 to change your starter or free if you let me fuck your ass raw just so I could mess with yuppies like OP
>>
>>29012731
Forgot to add, the storm was so bad (that big one at the end of January) that I had to get to the cabin a day early to beat it. All the roads down there were closed for 2 days. Had to shove a foot of snow out of my driveway before I could even unpack once I got home.
>>
>>29012743
I used to live in Southern Ohio, they really don't get snow like that hardly ever. I could have parked at the bottom and walked up, wasn't that far, I just wanted to park closer and almost paid dearly for it.

>>29012764
was this hocking hills by any chance?

> I could have parked at the bottom and walked up, wasn't that far
its truly annoying how with many rental cabins they do not make clear in the listing how far it is from parking to cabin or if there's a slope I've had a couple surprise steep slope cabins.

wife had a 2012 CVT outback when we met in 2019 that she was paying 600 a month on because of her shitty credit and because she didn't know how to deal with car salesmen. she was completely upside down on the loan, and everything on that hunk of shit broke between 60 and 80k miles, not to mention the struts and timing belt needing to be replaced not long after. you also have to pull apart the wheel well to get to the headlight bulbs, and pull the bumper off to replace the headlight assembly. post-CVT subarus are all hunks of shit, i still get mad when i see that stupid logo now.

I think the tension was held with oil pressure which would still hold tension but was very weak and would make a quick couple of knocking sounds when the rpm went up. Months later it eventually jumped timing on the last stretch and I was able to floor it home because it was a non interference engine.

this is pretty easy for most people with a ratchet set and maybe a trunk scissor jack.
even if you don't have that shit it's not impossible to bum a ride to a parts store and retreive the shit.
>>
>>29013588
Never get under a car with the OEM jack. They are only the bare minimum to take a wheel off from beside the car.
Not arguing with you or anything I just think lurkers should know.
>>
>>29013260
Because it was built by General Mexicans
The starter being located near the headers makes heat soak a huge problem for this model, especially the V8s... After a long drive, starting it up again causes it to struggle and crank slowly.
I assume all those slow cranks over the years finally led to the starter burning up and failing altogether.
>>
>>29013243

No, this is a cabin I've rented each year for several years, really well maintained with nice amenities and owners that really give a shit. On the cheaper end too. One year they upgraded me to a larger cabin for free because the hot tub in the one I had booked wasn't working. They had been plowing the road each day as best they could and were fantastic at communicating with me when it became obvious I was going to need to come down an entire day early to beat the storm. I've been fortunate in my life that something this minor was the worst I've experienced and plan to go back.

I... have been in the latter group. After some 2014 Obama era law you can't even work software for any civilian company that has federal contracts without a secret clearance. I was a senior in software engineering when that passed. You have to not have done weed in 3 years to get any clearance, but rapists, traitors, and thieves can get hired any day.

I've failed over 100 days from urine tests. That's over 3 months.
I wouldn't lie to the feds. I'd rather neet it up or work retail than work for the gov't knowing that they could dig up evidence of me lying at any time. They probably don't care, but I can't handle that kind of mental worry every day. Not worth it to me.

Not terrible in comparison to other but. Driving on a busy 4 lane highway at night in my Avalon with 4 people. Highway has no overhead lights. All of the sudden, my battery fails and I lose all electricity completely. No lights outside or inside my vehicle. Headlights gone, and I assume tail/brake lights as well of course. Inside lights completely out. No gauges. Literally zero visibility except what other car's headlights can see. Engine running fine though. I managed to carefully and calmly pull off onto the next exit and into an O'Reilly's that happened to be open. Replaced the alternator and battery right there in the parking lot. Took about 4 hours, and we were on our way. Thankfully I am not a wrenchlet and also kept a full set of Metric wrenches and sockets in my trunk because I use all my SAE at work.
