Would have posted in a general but there was no Nissan gen here.I have a chance to get a great deal on a 2024 Nissan Versa S, but I am committed in trying to keep my privacy, so I want to disconnect anything that would spread telemetry of my car's usage data to the manufacturer. I read many Nissans have their TCUs behind the glove compartment but I have yet to see if this still holds true for the model I'm looking at. The bigger matter is that I've read DCing the TCU in a modern Nissan will also cause the entire Bluetooth system to fail, possibly even the radio. Are there known tutorials or schematics (obviously Nissan wouldn't publish any) to work around this? Also, I was told that disconnecting an internet antenna may also be warranted as that is how the vehicle connects to corporate in the first place. Is this different from the radio antenna, or are they one in the same? I read briefly that it is stored in a panel in the roof but couldn't find much more than that. I'm also opening the thread to discussing telemetry management and privacy practices for other makes and models. Is there a manufacturer that seems to be more consumer and privacy friendly with their policies or designs today?
you can disconnect the aerials from the TCU and it wont be able to communicate at all but the bluetooth should be in the radio and still work afterwards
>>29017522So you're not even suggesting to clip + dummy load the antenna but just DC the antenna itself? Now is that the same antenna the AM/FM radio uses? It's not the biggest need but I would like to retain radio function if at all possible, and I am open to installing my own or getting a separate antenna/cable for it.
Nope, too new. You'd be better off buying an old car without a SIM card and just getting the belts changed. You'd save money.
>>29017517If insurance finds out you disabled your telemetry and you get into a crash, they'll void your contact and refuse to pay out any claims.
>>29017553I read this from an AI overview:>Disabling the Telematics Control Unit (TCU) does not automatically void an insurance claim, but it can lead to denial if not disclosed or if it contributes to the incident. >Disclosure Requirements: In many jurisdictions, specifically the UK, you are legally required to declare any modification to the ECU or TCU. >Failure to disclose a modification that changes the vehicle's risk profile can allow insurers to void the policy or deny claims. >Causation: Insurers must typically prove that the disabled TCU was the cause of the accident. If the TCU was disabled for privacy and the accident was due to driver error unrelated to telematics, the claim may still be paid, provided the modification was disclosed. >Data Access: Even if the TCU is disabled, insurers may access vehicle data through dealer diagnostics or physical inspection of the ECU. If they discover an undisclosed modification during an investigation, they may refuse payout. >Warranty vs. Insurance: While disabling the TCU may void the manufacturer’s warranty (as confirmed by some dealers), this is separate from insurance coverage. However, some insurers view telematics removal as a risk factor that could lead to policy cancellation or non-renewal.Can I get another opinion? As it states a lot of this seems to be case-by-case depending on the company. This is a good point to make, I certainly don't want my insurance to get fucked up, and simultaneously I don't want to sign with an insurance provider who does not allow my TCU to be disabled.
>>29017562they spread shit like this around to scare people>uhhh if you disable our spyware then your insurance wont pay out!!!!absolute load of shit how the fuck would they even know?
>>29017575Because you got into an accident while, on their end, they hadn’t had data from the car in months and there are several thousand miles more on the car than the last packet they got? Maybe?
>>29017590>on their end, they hadn’t had data from the car in monthswhat end?????? the manufacturer is in leagues with the insurance companies??????lay off the heroin
>a great deal on a 2024 Nissan Versa S1. Why would you want something boring and shit like this and 2. If you're buying it it's not a 'great deal' at all. Is that what the salesman told you? Lmao
>>29017802>boring as shitBecause I am not made of money and need a good car with low milage to keep me going. I've looked at the market, done my research>If you're buying it it's not a 'great deal' at allI mean no shit but in the grand scheme of everything...>>29017547Wish I could but after the accident I have little options, the loan terms for this cudl loan specify it has to be a 2018 make or newer. I could at most afford a 4k purchase out of pocket but then I'd be ruined
>>29017816if this is your situation then maybe get a new job ASAP and stop blowing money on useless shit. A 10k loan over 5 years is like 190 a month... If you can't get approved for that maybe don't get a car
>>29017553Bullshit. My state literally outlawed TCUs a few years ago because manufacturers refused to provide the source code in compliance with our Right to Repair law. Nobody has ever had an insurance claim voided because they disabled it and all new cars are sold with the TCU disabled at the dealership before sale.Disabling the other nanny tech such as crash avoidance and blindspot monitors could cause you to get a claim voided because the insurance companies give discounts if you have this tech in your car obviously with the assumption you have it turned on.
>>29017816Get an $800 moped, it fits your budget.
>be FBI>want to arrest anon for some reason>FUCK WE CANT TRACK HIS CAR! >oh wait we can interrogate people, track phone, use camera records and use agents on foot to track him
>>29017837I'd be more concerned with what the manufacturer is doing with the data than the government. It is well known car companies sell TCU data to insurance companies so they can justify increasing your rates.>break hard to avoid a deer at 11pm on a Friday>uh, anon, were you drinking and driving!?>your rate is now $1500 a month, if it happens again, you're blacklisted
>>29017839except this doesn't happen. I'm an incredibly reckless driver with many tickets and my insurance going up tracks inflation/average
>>29017846>ticketsinsurance doesn't need to track this through TCUs, they get data on tickets and license points on their own all the time. You must already be considered a high risk client or something.
>>29017837that extra footwork they need to do to pin me to anything is precisely what the legal standard should be! Warrantlessly searching me is a major reason why I want to protect my privacy. DO NOT WELCOME OR ROLL OVER TO A NEW STANDARD OF LAW AND ORDER AT THE COST OF YOUR RIGHTS AND LIBERTIES!
>>29017575Its the jews
>>29017517>Is there a manufacturer that seems to be more consumer and privacy friendly with their policies or designs today? No. They all suck. Mozzilla did a deep dive on all of the major brands:https://www.mozillafoundation.org/en/privacynotincluded/categories/cars/
>>29018057>Nissan's privacy policy is probably the most mind boggling creepy, scary, sad, messed up privacy policy we have ever read. >Here's why: They come right out and say they can collect and share your sexual activity, health diagnosis data, and genetic information and other sensitive personal information for targeted marketing purposes. >And that's not all! They also say they can share and even sell "Inferences drawn from any Personal Data collected to create a profile about a consumer reflecting the consumer’s preferences, characteristics, psychological trends, predispositions, behavior, attitudes, intelligence, abilities, and aptitudes" to others for targeted marketing purposes.
>>29017553Bullshit fagget
Op. If you must buy a new car, pull the sim.Any instructions on how to modify and disable shit is a federal crime and no one is going to share a how to with you. You are legally allowed to modify the system yourself as long as you don't share how you did it.
>>29018195Thank you. Fuck sec 1201, but it's understandable. Now I need to know where the sim card is stored, because hell it IS the same communication system as a mobile network so this makes sense.
>>29018195>Any instructions on how to modify and disable shit is a federal crime and no one is going to share a how to with you.not truepeople aren't sharing because they're retarded technologically illiterate 30 yo boomers who don't even know what a sim card looks like
>>29018226does it look different than the one in my phone? that is the only SIM card I know of
>>29018320it very well may be an e-sim or be gsm and thus there is no externally accessible sim card unlike a cdma phone or aftermarket head unitregardless the issue lies in the fact that most "men" nowadays are midwits afraid of technology and don't seek to understand it, they just go on the internet and cry about how everything sucks.
>>29018063Modern cars are cucked.
my car is a 2012 and it's time to move on. what's the latest year car without telemetry data? are there any new ones with the option to forego it?
>>29018379Depends on the specific car. My ‘20 doesn’t have a SIM card so can’t send shit.
>>29017517Automakers sell vehicles at a reduced price and offset the discount with your data, disabling telemetry is no different than stealing.
>>29018395I know you’re being snarky, but I can’t imagine that there’s a single model that got cheaper the year they put a SIM in it.
>>29017517you drive a nissan, you don't deserve privacy.
>>29018401Data collection provides value to the consumer and strengthens the economy. It's a shame you can't see the big picture.
>>29018395Just like how videogame publishers don't have to pay the manufacturing costs of physical and there for sell digital games for cheaper?
>>29018431if you're a PC gamer: yesif you're a console kiddie: no, plus you need to pay extra for online
>>29018441pro tip: they aren't cheaper on PC. No, sales don't count, we're talking about release price.
>>29017517Do not buy it. Do not give such kikes your money. Simple as. There are much better choices anyway. Nissans are pieces of shit.
On a related note, what if BMW bought out Nissan back in 1999 instead of Renault?
