I've been considering importing a 2001 manual 520d into the US. Is this a stupid idea? The one in picrel has only 20k kms. I love diesels and prefer a stick shift but I'm not a fan of driving trucks so my options are mostly limited to clapped out dieselgate golfs.

Granted the E39 is exceedingly comfy, why would you import a 520d of all things? Unless you have some kind of emotional attachment to the model, it's a gigantic waste of money. Unless you're rich, but then why not import a 540i? Seems wasteful.

We have the 540i in the US. You can't find a manual 520d here though. It is a unique value proposition for that reason, plus the mileage is low on that one. It would be my daily anyway so idgaf if it's fast, I just want a stick shift with a diesel engine in a handsome and comfortable chassis.

the fascination euros had with diesel engines was extremely gay
>>
Why not import the 6cyl one
>>
I'd import a 530d manual instead

This, a manual base model 530d will outlast most cars still on the road.
The 520d is also a taxi special over here in Europe, there's a dude about 50km away from me who dailies his 520d he got brand new and put 1.2 million kilometres on it with only basic maintenance.
Still the original engine, transmission snd differential, nothing mechanical has been opened on it. It just works.

You want a piece of shit just because it's a rare piece of shit?

Coworker has a e39 520 petrol.
I told him if he ever decides to sell it at underprice I’m ready to take it off him.
Would recommend.

Are you trying to impress redditors or something? Because they are the only people who'd care about a 520d being in a country where they weren't sold

Uhhh, there's nothing funny about this.
An E39 with the M57D30 will roll coal on your Hyundai ass, and last 50 years.
>>
Just buy an Avalon holy fuck bro all this for a 520d please stop wining about muh diesel
>>

If it's actually 20k km it's fucked from not being driven.
Not worth it regardless, 530d is superior in every way.

>It is a unique value proposition for that reason
if you want a unique diesel, get one of those v10 or v12 diesels that the germans enginiggered.
