If price were the same i would probably choose the golf R but for 10,000$ less on avg i am really only considering the GR. On a somewhat related note, to the american government officials who banned the GR Yaris in america bc you didnt feel comfortable with the idea of parents buying their 10th grade kids a legitimate rally capable AWD rocket for 30,000$, go fuck yourselves, i hope you get cancer. The GR corolla is comprehensively inferior to the GR Yaris but is it good enough to be a worthwhile buy for AWD shits and giggles?
>>29023905isnt that true about everything we do to japanese imports?
>>29023912Wdym fren?
>>29023918wishing cancer upon politicians that do the bidding of a scared man named ford
>>29023905Golf R is boring as fuck, GRC isn't. That's not taking any of the rest of the car into account, but fun is the most important spec desu
>>29023942This is my take as well. The gr corolla seems closer to a rally race car than the golf r for the most part.
>>29023942Also one of the cool things about the gr corolla is you can add front splitters and rear wings for up to like 250 pounds of downforce at 125 mph iirc. Thats pretty awesome imo.
neither. you want the GR Yaris.
>>29024014>>29023905Hideous gook abominations Is this what the young people are into?
>>29024015dunno about zoomers but us boomers love it
>>29023905>to the american government officials who banned the GR Yaris in americaNobody banned GR Yaris. It's because GR Yaris' custom chassis, GA-B at front, GA-C at rear, was too expensive to certify emissions and crash tests for North America. GR Corolla is entirely on GA-C which was already sold in North America.>but is it good enough to be a worthwhile buy for AWD shits and gigglesIf you're the kind of person to care about roll racing with unbeatable DSG, and want upscale interior and maximize trunk space then get the Golf R. Or, you fall in the camp that thinks driving a Golf R feels too sterile and boring and too effortless, then you just may fall into the camp who prefers GR Corolla/GR Yaris who want a drivers car thats more engaging and fun.GR Corolla is only "inferior" to GR Yaris in the sense that it's not a homologation special and that it's lighter by being a shorter car. That and US tuners are kind of a joke still trying to figure things out out, whereas Australia and Europe has already figured out the G16E.
>>29024015All cars are hideous nowadays. Stick to classics if you want a nice looking car.
>>29024019Imagine owning a company like Koenigsegg and not driving around in an unlicensed, unreleased prototype on a development registration
>>29024071the GR Yaris shits in those unfortunately
>>29023905>If price were the sameit's pretty close if you factor in a GRC that's closest in features and tech to the R is the Premium Plus and they run $46k to $49k and Toyota stealerships, at least in the US, like to go ham on the markupson top of that a '23-'24 mk8 is preferable over the 8.5 if you want to actually do work on it as the refresh introduced SFD2 ECU security which many tunes and other things are still incompatible withyou'd want a 2025 or new GRC Premium Plus however or factor in the new clutch you're most likely gonna have to put in as soon as you get it because Toyota didn't address how subpar the clutches were until recently and getting a used example more likely than not is going to come with one that is beat to hell
>>29023905Toyota's reliability has gone to shit.I'm not going to buy or recommend a car that spontaneously catches on fire and then has the warranty claim denied because you went over 80mph. Especially for something marketed as a homologation car.
>>29024117and despite the GRC Premium Plus still running a few grand cheaper it should be moreso with just how lackluster that interior issure VW very much missed the mark on the haptic controls on the Golf R but the GRC interior is straight up a base model Corolla and you're going to be spending a few more grand on the suspension if you want to match the Golf R's ride quality after all that the GRC still loses to the Golf R in most casesmaybe if Toyota gave the GRC their new 4 cylinder it'd be a different story but I doubt that's going to happenof course I could say the same about the Golf R and the DAZA but that has an even less likely chance to happen, Audi would rather bury it than fork it over to VWeither way it sucks these are the only 2 new AWD hot hatches left in the US, 3 if you count the Mazda 3 and I'm not sure that number is going to go any higherI have no faith that new Dodge they've yet to fully unveil isn't just a crossover
>>29024060>thinks the Yaris is hideous>thinks pic related looks normalTo each their own. Personally I'd take the 3 door rally egg over the pigfat 4 door saloon anyday.
Pros>very fun to drive, always looking for an excuse to throw it around a corner or floor it>torque split isn't a complete meme, can actually feel the difference going between modes>car makes a lot of neat mechanical sounds apart from just the engine, transmission clacks loudly when changing gears>handling is sharp, suspension is good if you want to daily, not too stiff not too soft>lots of non-engine shared parts with the base model Corolla (doors, mirrors, dashboard, headlights, A/C blower etc.) means parts are relatively cheap and plentiful if you need to fix something>huge mod support, every company ever is making shit for the GRC, every part of the car can be toyed with and modified however you wantCons>trunk space is actually laughable, can't stuff more than a few grocery items without putting seats down, tall objects require the removal of the cargo cover 90% of the time>stock brake pads are incredibly dusty, wheels go from glossy black to matte brown in a week>gas mileage is terrible, 18~20 MPG if you're not constantly hammering on it>boost lags sometimes, takes a second for the turbo to spool up if you go from no throttle to full throttle quickly, is very noticeable>rev hang isn't the worst but it's noticeable>wireless charging port is useless, can only charge phones if at a dead stop, driving knocks the phone immediately off the charger>no center arm rest or center console storage (i personally dgaf about this one but people bitch about it nonetheless)>rear seat legroom sucks>seating position a bit too high >clutch rattles a lot when idle, mildly annoying>JBL speakers are alright, would've rather had the stock stereo to save some money>phone connectivity is hit or miss, sometimes the phone doesn't even connect>piano black center console is a bitch to keep clean>lane assist is incredibly intrusive and sometimes dangerous, have to turn it off every time the car is started>source: me
>>29023905>today, a toyota shill loser tries to conflate VW R line and toyotas copycat playskool gr line as equal competitorsLOL. Pathetic.
>>29024279with a non-insane amount of miles it goes for the same price as a GRC despite being 8 years old and most likely beaten on
>>29023905The type R is way faster. It's not even close.Automatic only thought.
You're smoking fucking crack if you think a gr corolla is anything approaching a homologation street model of a rally car
>>29024126it literally looks like a base model civic but with a big ricer wing
>>29024014Op here. You didnt read my whole op faggot. I agree with you. The yaris is superior to the corolla.
>>29024071The GR yaris is closer to a street legal race carvthan a koenigsegg. Plus you can wrap a couple gr yari around a tree every year and not go bankrupt. Proper spirited driving requires there to be a very low level of fear of crashing your sports car. Anybody driving a koenigsegg is going to be driving it very safely unless they are rich as all fuck.
>>29024117Ive seen 2025 GRC premium (higher ft-lbs and 2x T LSDs) with a few thousand miles for 41k$. I think for anything car thats almost as good as a true gr yaris i think thats a much better deal than a 25 golf R for 50k
>>29024185I think the coolest thing about the GR corolla is the aftermarket mod bonanza. If i got a GRC they make front splitters(spoilers) and rear spoiler wings that can boost your downforce to near racecar levels for a few thousand bucks. these downforce mods that ppl make for the GRC are not the typical faggotry gimmicks that are just for posing and not for actual downforce. Taking a long sweeping turn at 100mph in a GRC that you couldnt take at that speed without downforce mods pressing 250 pounds DF down into the tires would be cool as fuck
>>29024335My daily driver is a vw and i even own some vw stock. Youre accuracy of your radar is chockablock full of faggotry. Get help.
>>29025133Its the closest we can get in america tho man.
>>29024123>I'm not going to buy or recommend a car that spontaneously catches on fire and then has the warranty claim denied because you went over 80mph.Did you get this from reddit too
>>29025197The aftermarket support has been insane. You can get the usual mod stuff like exhausts and intercoolers but you can also get a dogbox gear set for the transmission (or a full sequential if you want), you can get an AWD controller, big brake kits, small brake kits which I didn't even know existed, lift kits, weld-on and bolt-on roll cages, billet aluminium transfer cases. Literally every part of the car has been toyed with in some way or another.
Rally homologation hasn't been a thing since 1997. Modern rally cars have basically nothing to do with the street-going cars they share a name with. The GR Corolla is as much of a rally car as the Mustang Mach-E Rally is, i.e. only in marketing
>>29023905I was cross shopping GRC, FK8 Type R, Golf R mk 7.5 and STI with the goal of < 40k. Test drove them all, found a sub 20k mile STI and went with that. I nearly picked up a GRC mostly because warranty, but I wasn't really enthusiastic about the terrible interior and lesser AWD system compared to the STI. The GRC and the Golf feel like two very different cars, if you're honest with yourself and just want a comfortable awd daily, Golf R wins all day. GRC is fun and tossable, but it is just not even close to being worth the MSRP.
>>29024019he should TFG swap it
NTA but as someone who's friends with lots of ex-Evo 8/9/X owners in the USA the GR Corolla is the closest to the older Evos in driving experience and a lot have jumped ship to either GRCs with second being GR Supras, then high-spec Camaro/Mustang (1LE SS, ZL1, GT350, Mach) then Corvettes. Definitely not performance or longevity but has its own benefits (new car, nice interior, more comfortable/livable). Have seen similar in the UK/Euro Evo Owner community; they just go for GR Yaris instead or M3/M4 after their Evo
>>29025866The GR Yaris was the rally one. Arguably the GR Corolla is more of a track car if anything.I'm pretty sure the Rookie Racing GR Corolla hydrogen car is just a straight up GR Corolla with a roll cage and hydrogen fuel conversion, I don't think they did anything extra to the engine or transmission.
>>29023905Why tf did they rebrand to “Gazoo” name is utterly retarded
>>29023905One thing I'll respect about the GR Corolla is it has an actual bespoke engine unlike every other "affordable" driver's car.
>>29024279Ones in good condition is so rare that they can't be used as a daily anymore with good conscience.
>gr corollaBTFOhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dv9ySQfS8i0
why not a focus rs if you want a rally car?
>>29025979TL;DR Toyota didn't want its chairman Akio Toyoda from racing in the Nurburgring, Akio couldn't call his team Toyota Racing so instead he called it Gazoo Racing because Gazoo is the name of a shopping portal website that Toyota has a hand in
>>29026071>>29024279take all the problems of the gr corolla and add a extra cylinder and +300lbsalso the drivers seat isnt dead on straight its offset to the center
>>29025866Rally2 Yaris is pretty much the street Yaris GR with a roll cage
>>29026382NTA but they seem to differ in a lot of the specific details based on https://toyotagazooracing.com/rally2/cars/ and https://toyotagazooracing.com/gr/yaris/. Different brakes, different suspension, different transmission, etc. The engines have the same displacement and I know there are restrictions on how much they can change the chassis, but are they really similar enough to call the GR Yaris as Rally2 car without a roll cage?
>>29026382nah it goes further than that, they start as standard bare shells from Motomachi but then they're modified extensively, for example the suspension mounting point are completely different.
>>29025532James may clarkson and hammond would probably adore the grc/gry. I love how the GR line is all about affordability and power to the ppl. I hypothesize that grc and aftermarket mods are pressed downwards in price to become cheaper bc of tge threat and pressure of china making thousands of cheap as fuck add ons and mods. I think its only a matter of time before china makes a car thats as good as a GR corolla and sells it for 19k $. Probably wont catch up to the GR corolla for a while bc of how insanely good it is but it will happen eventually
>>29025979It was either gazoo racing or doctor McPoonface

It doesn't even slightly compare, no production car even slightly compares. Grow up, peter pan. Just have fun with your car and stop trying to larp as ari vatanen.
