Yesterday my heater core cracked during a traffic jam (engine was getting hot, but not in the red yet)
i had to do a roadside repair and pinched the line shut, i added all the water i had with me

there was a hardware store 10 mins away from me i ended up toughing it out until there, i think i drove like 5 mins with the low coolant alarm on

ive made a bypass now and the leaking has stopped, however i did notice the car runs a bit grumpy and the exhaust smells

Considering i only drove for a short time, i doubt it would crack/warp since there was some coolant left, it leaked out of the pinched line

I'd wager your heater core cracking was a symptom that you were overheating/flashing to steam, not the cause of your problem. Not being in the red doesn't mean in the clear. If your antifreeze mixture is too low your boiling point is lower, and if you have a pressurized system with a bad cap the pressure won't maintain and your boiling point will lower.
Low coolant + already overheating is not a good combination. You probably blew a head gasket or warped the head.

im pretty sure thats the failure point, had to replace the coolant tank as well when i bought it (also cracked)

Its 26 year old brittle plastic, my best guess that the hotter then usual coolant killed it

ive been driving it for 2 hours today and the coolant level remains stable for now

forgot to mention as well, one of the fans plugs was disconnected, now the fan works as well
Probably wouldt have overheated if that was plugged in, probably has been left unplugged for years by the previous owner

Thermostats are usually ~195 degrees. Boiling point of a 50% antifreeze mix at 0 psi is only 223 degrees. 260 at 15psi. The difference in temperature between normal and overheating is actually not that substantial and it's far more likely a pressure difference cracked it than a temperature difference.
You're trying very hard to deny what your engine is telling you: it overheated.

No doubt it ran too hot and i should have probably pulled over somewhere, thats my fault

i think i see what youre implying and im not blaming the heater core for cracking, it was probably the weakest part in the loop and therefor cracked and died

im more concerned about potential engine damage after cruising around with very low coolant for like 5 to 10 mins

Running bad with an exhaust smell says there's something in the combustion chamber that shouldn't be there. Although I also suppose you could've gotten a valve stuck.

You don't need a water pump at all for an engine to run fine (for a bit) so that's not the issue.
It was probably already overheating when the heater core cracked, and then adding pure water (which lowers the boiling point) and running low on coolant while it's pissing some of its pressure through the leak made things even worse.

You probably have an expensive fix ahead of you.

I don't want to post a "what to buy" thread...but there should really be a general for that.

I have always owned coups, sedans, MR2. I honestly want something different, but I'm REAL cheap. I would like to spend around $15k cash (I have plenty more saved). It would be an only vehicle and must have 4 doors. Open to anything desu, truck, sedan, wagon. Drivetrain must be reliable with proper maintenance. I'm blue collar and drive 30 mins to work.

I would like something european, but people always complain about maintenance cost...and they are probably right considering my budget.

It's when the clutch starts to transfer power. If it can't be said to be completely disengaged, it's starting to bite.
Basically, the disengagement region means nothing to you as a driver. You start to rev up as it bites so the harder it bites the more power you're giving it and you don't stall out by dumping the clutch without enough oomph behind it for it to move the car rather than the car stopping the engine.

I just bought a 2015 manual mitsubishi mirage with 110k miles for 4k. I drove my last car into the ground and I want to actually take care of this one.
Didn't get an inspection, I studied what to look for and gave it a good look underneath before buying but I'm not a car guy.
It has a clunk that I didn't notice when test driving.

If I stop sharply when driving in either direction there's an audible clunk.
It happens when I stop at any speed as long as I brake sharply.
I don't feel anything when it happens, only hear it if I have no music/aircon running.

My research says this might be a worn control arm bushing or a suspension issue, are these things I could diagnose without taking it to a mechanic?


Additionally, the suspension feels finewhen I push it or when I drive over regular bumps, but it bottoms out when I hit one particularly concerning bump on the interstate at high speed on my way to work each day (last car handled it fine, 07 kia rio).
The suspension is bright pink so I think the last owner replaced them (they made some other 'sporty' adjustments), googling gives me the Godspeed MSS0114-A '"Lowering kit", I can try and find a serial number or some kind of identifier tomorrow.
Is suspension like this just expected to handle bumps worse and should I be extra careful, or is this all a sign of concerning wear/damage?

I used to own and daily an 89 GXL non-turbo which makes it more reliable than the turbo versions. The engine itself is reliable, most of the other things too but we're talking late 80s Mazda, the plastic was literally crumbling away on almost everything in that car and that was the late 00s. In terms of everything else? Same maintenance as with any other car, people who complain about that reliability are wrenchlets who will make anything else as unreliable. The FC is a great platform with fundamental flaws and the engine or it's reliability isn't flawed.

Anyone here familiar with Volvo? Want to get a 2013-ish XC90 as a family car. Need something even just fairly reliable, and I’ve heard good things about Volvo’s diagnostic abilities for garage wrenching. Is a 130k mile example with no issues going to molest me as soon as I get it off the lot? I’ve heard the NA i6s are good engines, but the car has some electrical woes.

Seems like the last owner did some fancy stuff to it, but I just want to be able to go over bumps on the way to work.
I guess I can adjust it on top to be softer so I'll try that, after watching some videos it looks like most of the adjustments need to be done with the wheels off.

I got a nail in my tire, and upon inspection I also got a tear somehow pretty much exactly like pic rel. Will somewhere like discount tire patch it (the nail) or will they not touch it due to the tear?

My Lexus is taking a while to build up oil pressure on start. Since it has a petrol engine and over 230k miles on it I suspect that the rod/main bearings are worn out. I'm going to rebuild the engine. Questions:
1. Should I get OEM or aftermarket main and rod bearings? OEM is going to be much more expensive obviously but I guess then I could select bearings with the correct tolerances according to the service manual instead of a "one size fits all" solution?
2. At this mileage is it fine to reuse the valves? Again, I could replace them all just to be safe but this is going to be very expensive unless I buy some cheap chinese valves made of mystery metal and that doesn't seem like a good idea.

Tears in the sidewall cannot be fixed, but if you can't see wires then it's probably OK and a tire shop will probably agree to remove the nail and patch the tire. If you can see wires then the tire should be scrapped and any decent tire shop will tell you that. t. ex tire tech

Don't get paint on the inside of the rim where the tyre contacts the wheel, it might affect the seal and cause a slow leak. But other than that just slap paint on the rim.

Undersealing is more labour intensive than expensive. You just need to clean the underside, peel off any loose under seal/paint, remove any flaking rust with a wire brush/wire wheel then paint it. You can get underseal in spray cans or in a tin to be used with a brush.

Yeah I know, and as far as I can tell no cords but I can't quite pull back the flap like in the picture. I was looking on scamazon for tire plugs anyway and found something called mushroom plugs which I haven't seen before, figured I would give those a shot and if it doesn't work I'll try my luck at the tire shop.
